BLACK PANTHER: Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige On Why T'Challa Hasn't Been Recast In WAKANDA FOREVER

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige opens up on the decision to not recast Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa in the MCU, explaining why they decided to take a different approach for the Black Panther sequel.

Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman passed away following a lengthy battle with cancer, bringing a premature end to what looked set to be a truly epic acting career. The world mourned his passing, and celebrated the impact he made in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as T'Challa.

When it became clear Marvel Studios planned to forge ahead with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, fans wondered whether the character would be recast in order for his story to continue.

Instead, the decision has been made that T'Challa has died in the MCU, retiring the hero that Boseman made his own. We still don't know how that happens, of course, but it's been made clear that visual effects will not be used to "resurrect" Boseman for any scenes in the sequel.

Talking to Empire Online, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige explained the decision not to recast the Black Panther franchise's lead, even in the midst of pushback from fans.

"It just felt like it was much too soon to recast," he explains. "Stan Lee always said that Marvel represents the world outside your window. And we had talked about how, as extraordinary and fantastical as our characters and stories are, there’s a relatable and human element to everything we do. The world is still processing the loss of Chad. And Ryan poured that into the story."

"The conversations were entirely about, yes, 'What do we do next?'" Feige continues. "And how could the legacy of Chadwick – and what he had done to help Wakanda and the Black Panther become these incredible, aspirational, iconic ideas – continue? That’s what it was all about."

It's an approach that makes sense, even if T'Challa's time in the MCU ending has disappointed some fans. The Black Panther sequel looks set to be an emotional experience, anyway, and we're sure Marvel Studios and Coogler have found a way to end this character's story in a satisfying and meaningful way.

As for who will take over as the new Black Panther, we'll find out when Black Panther: Wakanda Forever arrives in theaters on November 11.

It feels like one of those situations where there's no right answer and there's no wrong answer. No matter what they were to do, there'd be a group of people who thought they should have done the opposite, and I think both points of view have merit.

The way I see it, if it was too soon, and they should not have made it yet so that they could recast by the time they did.

@TheWalkingCuban - Precisely, they didn't want to delay their movie and wait for a better moment. Instead they opted to go ahead with a bad creative decision.

@Urubrodi - right, and look I don’t want to throw this out there but I will: capitalizing on the sentimentality of his death AND replacing him with a woman, was there ever really any other option? Uh uh.

I wish they had the balls to recast.

It’s a damned if you do, damned if you don’t. No right answer.

"Too soon to recast" means to me recasting was the correct thing to do but it would have looked insensitive doing it and they're not going to pause the money making machine to do the right thing. Yeah you'll get Black Panther 2 out in time but it's short sighted because your box office will hurt after that because people aren't going to line up if they know Suri is BP in BP 3,4.

As sad as it was, I’m sorry but I’m not still processing the loss of Chadwick Boseman. Those emotions were processed long ago. Should of just delayed a second movie if you thought the world needed more time to process (which I don’t think they did).

@TheUnworthyThor - for a family member or close friend, sure. Not some dude that was in three marvel movies lol

@TheUnworthyThor - yeah. What do they think we're like? It's not like we knew Chadwick as a person or anything. He was an actor who worked on movies we liked. That's about all the general audience knew about the guy. Yeah, it was sad at the time. But it's already been 2 years. My dad passed away like 2 months ago and I'm already moving on with my life.

hopefully after the movie this will be justified in the way its handled on screen. trusting Coogler to handle it with class.

1. Kevin doesn't speak for everyone.

2. The black panther is a fictional character. Anyone can play him.

3. I doubt he's really dead... He's so called death was too random.
