BLUE BEETLE Likely To Become Next DCEU Box Office Flop After Disappointing $43.4 Million Global Debut

All signs point to Blue Beetle becoming Warner Bros. Discovery's third DC Extended Universe box office flop of 2023 after a disappointing opening at the global box office. Here's a look at what went wrong!

Blue Beetle opened in theaters this weekend and things aren't looking good for the latest DC Extended Universe movie. A lower-than-expected $25 million domestic debut was bad enough, but the international numbers are in and, unfortunately, they're not good.

The movie has made only $18 million across 61 markets across five days; not only is that lower than Shazam! Fury of the Gods ($34.6 million) but it's also less than what Wonder Woman 1984 ($38.5 million) made during the height of the pandemic when theaters were at 25% capacity.

As a result, Blue Beetle has earned only $43.4 million at the global box office during its opening weekend.

There's been a lot of talk about the movie doing big numbers in Latin markets, but that $18 million included only $2.1 million from Brazil and $2.7 million from Mexico.

Even recent DCEU flops like Black Adam and The Flash performed better overseas, with $75.9 million and $75 million respectively. In fairness, both featured much bigger stars and at least some characters who are known to non-comic book readers.

The SAG-AFTRA strike won't have helped matters as it means the cast hasn't been able to promote the movie in the normal way. However, some junket interviews did take place prior to actors hitting the picket lines. Even The Flash only had Sasha Calle doing the rounds due to Michael Keaton being busy elsewhere and Ezra Miller's personal issues meaning he was only trotted out for a single red carpet appearance.

Considering the fact Blue Beetle is light on noteworthy stars, it's hard to imagine them actually being able to make a significant difference to its opening weekend.

There's a chance the DCEU movie will have legs, but it's not looking overly likely. While there are no huge titles on the horizon - Gran Turismo might pose some competition but September looks rather dull - word-of-mouth probably won't help, something that's evident from a B+ CinemaScore.

Even the Rotten Tomatoes score has now dipped to 76%, meaning it's a couple of percentage points away from losing "Certified Fresh" status. It's a shame to see Blue Beetle struggle in this way, especially as it appears to be objectively better than other recent DCEU titles.

The DCEU brand, however, appears to be damaged beyond repair.

I skipped seeing this thing because of the dumb Batman line in the trailer, also the director comes across as such a nosebleed on social media.

Despite all this, I will still see it. As a DC fan, I am a glutton for punishment.

But not before watching a massive DC marathon. One that I call The Clockwork Marathon!
It's 13 movies and 13 episodes long, it starts at the top of a clockface and once it's run it's sequence, it starts again with a new beginning.
One half of the clockface is the OG Burtonverse and the other half is the Snyderverse (not the DCEU, not the Whedonverse, but only those movies that are accepted by the SnyderCult as being truly set in the Snyderverse).

Every clockface starts with a 12, so what better prelude than the Ultimate Cut of Watchmen to starts things off?

12. Watchmen - The Ultimate Cut.

(Burtonverse sequence)
1. Batman.
2, Batman Returns.
3. Batman Forever.
4. Batman & Robin.
5. Catwoman.
6. Birds of Prey (TV Series).

(Snyderverse sequence)
7. Man of Steel.
8. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice - Ultimate Edition.
9. Wonder Woman.
10. Zack Snyder's Justice League.
11. Aquaman.
12. The Flash.
(new beginning/DCU)
1. Blue Beetle.

(Not that Blue Beetle is actually DCU, but Gunn does promise that we'll see this character continue in his new universe and James Gunn never lies *cough*cough*).

So without further ado, I'm going to sit and watch 38/39 hours of content and then go to my local movie theatre and say "One for Blue Beetle please" and they'll laugh and say "Blue Beetle?! We're not showing it anymore, dumbass. It flopped so hard it didn't even make it to the second weekend!"

And then I'll be forced to go see Barbie for a third time. Can't wait.

@MclovinLife - Why, for reporting news YOU don't like? Sorry, should I lie and declare Blue Beetle a massive BO win when it's the lowest-grossing DCEU movie ever released both domestically and overseas? There's no bias here - just facts.

How can a movie based on a character 95% of the population has never heard of with no build up that was supposed to be a direct to streaming release be considered a flop? Seriously? 43$ mil seems high to me.

Had a feeling it would flop in theaters but I feel like it will find its audience with streaming.

A movie like Blue Beetle should be released when your universe is doing well. It's like when Marvel released Guardians or Ant-Man. A successful brand will make people want to watch unknown properties because they will be curious about finding out about a character that they know little about in a universe that they enjoy. But when you have a dumpster fire of a universe, releasing something unknown is about the same as begging for it to be ignored and forgotten. If even the The Batman did not make as much money as it should, even though the movie was actually good, imagine Blue Beetle.

For me the problems with a lot of recent comic book movies is they are simply too childish, there seems to be a trend to focus around children as major characters giving them superpowers. This might work in some instances but it doesn’t seem to sit well with hardened comic book fans. They also have far too much humour in them, that’s not saying there can’t be a few laughs but they need careful application and not just thrown into every action sequence as they just kill the moment. Finally and more specific to the recent DC movies is nobody is going to invest in a movie knowing it’s part of a winding up order prior to yet another reboot. I don’t see why this is so difficult to understand.

@Spike101 - That was well put and captures my feelings exactly! It is not like this studio does not know this. The only two well performing DC related films JUST SO HAPPEN to be the most adult of their recent offerings and have been shielded from any threat of a reboot. Go figure!

@Forthas - thank you. I seem to remember as a teenager (a long time ago now) that most kids wanted to watch films aimed at older age groups than themselves rather than younger ones.

@Spike101 - Well I think the industry wide strategy has been to use films as an advertising vehicle to sell toys so the wackier and more childish they make these films the more toys they can sell. Clearly that has not worked.
