CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD Star Tim Blake Nelson Takes Issues With Martin Scorsese's Superhero Comments

Captain America: Brave New World star Tim Blake Nelson has shared high praise for the upcoming Marvel Studios movie while making a case for the MCU after filmmaker Martin Scorsese's continued criticisms.

Tim Blake Nelson first played The Leader in 2008's The Incredible Hulk, the second MCU movie after Iron Man was released earlier that same year.

Samuel Sterns' story ended with a hint that he was about to become The Leader but, over a decade and a half later, we still don't know what became of him. However, thanks to Captain America: Brave New World, all that changes next year.

"I deeply, deeply grieved over the prospect of not being able to come back into the MCU," Nelson told Variety of his absence in a recent interview. "All I wanted to do, as an actor, was to figure out what happens to this guy. 18 years later I got to do it and I wasn’t disappointed."

"It was a great challenge and I was guided beautifully by Julius Onah, who’s an indie director," he said of the next Captain America movie. "These are real directors who want to work with real actors and give them opportunities to play outlandish characters. Marvel supports that."

The actor went on to say that, despite endless talk of superhero fatigue, no one should "count Marvel out." Nelson added, "Marvel is an unheard-of phenomenon in movie history. Kevin Feige and his studio created dozens of connected movies that exist in one cinematic universe, to use their term. There’s no comparable achievement. So no – I don’t think it’s over."

He'd go on to say that Captain America is one of Marvel Studios' "most grounded" franchises, comparing it to Logan (an interesting remark seeing as Brave New World features a Red Hulk). "This is going to be a wonderful movie," Nelson added.

Of course, one of Marvel Studios' biggest detractors in recent years has been Martin Scorsese. Nelson brought the filmmaker up while praising the MCU, making it clear he fully disagrees with the idea of superhero movies not being "cinema."

"I couldn’t respect Martin Scorsese more, he’s his own genre, but I disagree with him when he derides Marvel. I come down on the side of Marvel movies absolutely being cinema. They return us to being kids again. When they are really good, and they often are, you lose yourself in them."

"Are they profound? Are they ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘Miller’s Crossing,’ are they ‘Bicycle Thieves,’ ‘Schindler’s List’ or Kieślowski? No, but they aren’t aspiring to be. They are entertainment and there’s artistry involved in them. That’s my Marvel speech."

After meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, played by Harrison Ford in his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, Sam finds himself in the middle of an international incident. He must discover the reason behind a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red.

Captain America: Brave New World stars Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Xosha Roquemore, Carl Lumbly, with Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson, and Harrison Ford.

The movie is directed by Julius Onah and produced by Kevin Feige and Nate Moore. Louis D’Esposito and Charles Newirth serve as executive producers.

Captain America: Brave New World opens in U.S. theaters on February 14, 2025.

Some of it can be for its own genre. To me Winter Soldier is cinema for spy thrillers.

@ItsNotForMeWahh - Winter Soldier is a special film. It's not just a good super-hero film, it's a really good movie overall.

Man , are they still asking for people’s thoughts on that statement?.

Personally I’m biased but I do agree with his comments about Marvel movies being cinema…

Ultimately cinema like any form of art are made to make you feel and if it is then that then it falls into that medium.

Anyway , it’s so nice to see & hear his genuine enthusiasm to be back and as the main baddie this time!!.

This is someone who has had a steady career as a renowned character actor/director/writer in indie & mainstream cinema , theater and television so to have him be this excited about playing a comic book villain such ad the Leader like he would be for a great play or something is wonderful…

I for one can’t wait to see him in the film!!.

Tim Blake Nelson as the Leader is like casting from a Roger Corman movie.

Damn Tim, I was not familiar with your game. I did not know you were chill like that.

I truly hope that the Leader is utilized to his fullest potential here, and not just being used as a throwaway MCU villain.

@Fares - I hope he’s well done and maybe even lives to fight another day (though I doubt it).

Giving these villains a chance to be recurring allows them to be given more depth in the future which is how it is in the comics.

@TheVisionary25 - Yeah we don't really have any of those at the moment, maybe aside from Zemo. Even Loki turned to the good side after a couple of appearances. I'd like an actual villain to become a recurring character in the universe.

I can see what he means about the Captain America franchise itself being more grounded compared to other Marvel properties atleast since TWS because it deals with such relevant issues & topics with government & politics…

This seems like it will be the same case for the most part but I am interested to see how they will balance it with the more comic booky elements such as Red Hulk or a dude with a giant cranium in The Leader (I think they will be used sparingly hence we haven’t seen them much).

Tim is right! Scorsese is his own genre. He's automatically Oscar material when he makes a movie. These superhero movies are big budget popcorn movies. They are still art, though. People put a lot of time and effort into making these films. They're not everyone's flavor, and that's fine. No need to shit on the genre, though. No one's giving Scorsese shit for that dud "Gangs of New York" LOL.

After seeing this scene from The Irishman I no longer care what Martin has to say cause he’s definitely not the talented director he used to be…

Scorsese really hurt all these peoples feelings. You know there’s some truth to what he said when people are still bringing it up. Like it touched too close to home, everyone turning against him like he running for president .
