BOX OFFICE: CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Soars Toward $1 Billion
After just three weeks since its release, Marvel Studios Captain America: Civil War is only a matter of days from crossing $1 billion worldwide at the box office; will it outgross The Avengers? Hit the jump to find out!
In only three weeks since its release, Captain America: Civil War became the highest grossing movie of 2016 after surpassing Disney's Zootopia on Tuesday with worldwide total of $981.9 million, and will soar past $1 billion on Friday. The Marvel threequel has amassed an impressive $671.4 million internationally at the box office so far, and after just two weeks since its domestic release, it stands as the fifth highest grossing movie of the year domestically with a total $310.5 million.
It's pretty much safe to say that Captain America: Civil War is going to surpass Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's $328 million and Deadpool's $365 million domestic total to become the highest grossing movie of 2016 domestically - but will it outgross The Avengers? Since it's performing pretty much in line with Avengers: Age of Ultron, that films $459 domestic total isn't out of reach just yet, but the chances of it outgrossing The Avengers domestic total of $623 is slim to none at this point.
The question is though, will Captain America: Civil War reign surpreme at the box office for the rest of the year? I have a feeling Warner Bros. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Disney's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story could dethrone it, but the film is showing strong legs so far, so you never know.
