Variety has revealed that Anthony and Joe Russo's Captain America: Civil War will take advantage of brand new IMAX technology to film sequences in the 2016 blockbuster. Around 15 minutes of footage will be shot with new 2D digital cameras, which stand alongside the company's existing 3D digital cameras and 2D film cameras. "We like being on the cutting edge of technology, and we like to enhance storytelling with technology in a way that pushes the narrative forward creatively," explained Joe Russo. "When you're working on a Marvel film, there's a sense of showmanship that goes along with the movies, and no exhibitor exploits that better than IMAX." This marks the first time that Marvel has utilised the format, though Guardians of the Galaxy was released in IMAX last year and Avengers: Age of Ultron is set to follow suit. Are you excited to see the Russo brothers make use of the format?

@markymarkrises Impossible because the cameras are very loud and it's hard to hear people talk when it's running.

@Reasonnnn

yeah, and it such a thing was going to be attempted for a superhero movie it'd probably take years of post-production to compensate for the sound

Awesome, seeing A2 next Wednesday at the Sydney Imax, although I'm not sure if any of it was shot with those cameras. It'll still be amazing though.

FYI it's the largest screen in the world, I've seen TDK, TDKR, GOTG and Interstellar there. All I can say is, it's extremely difficult to go back to regular cinema screens or home theatre after watching movies there. It really envelops you. I can not wait for CA, Star Wars and BVS. You really feel like you're there.

PS

Does anyone know why Joss Whedon changed from 16:9 to Widescreen for the sequel?

Not trolling but gotta be honest.
That clip at the end of the premiere for Age of Ultron got some really dodgy CGI.

I wonder if Disney will have a Mark Millar cameo given his relationship with Fox. They put J. Michael Stracynski in Thor, Walt Simonson in Thor 2, and Ed Brubaker in Cap 2, so it only makes sense to throw Millar a bone for writing Civil War.

I'm all in for it.

@MarkyMarkRises One day it'll happen. I feel like Alfonso Cuaron or James Cameron would be the ones to master that technology.

@blackandyellow He'll play a Crossbones/Zemo henchmen that gets utterly destroyed by Cap.

@reasonnnn Why Cameron or Cuaron? They haven't exactly embraced the technology on the feature side. They seem more interested in the capabilities of 3D tech.

If I had to guess, it would probably be Nolan. TDK was the first feature to ever use the camera, Interstellar had an hour plus including some dialogue scenes, and he's been involved in the R&D of new Imax cameras.

"But why is this specifically a Captain America movie?"

Cause they said it was.

GREAT news!!! IMAX is the best.

It's about time too! 3D is the worst. I'll take IMAX over IMAX 3D any day!!

@MarkyMarkRises - "Hell yeah I'm excited. It'd be kickass if the whole movie was IMAX"

I wish!

From my understanding, IMAX cameras, for the most part, are still too big/bulky and loud to film entire movies with right now. Nolan is a huge advocate for IMAX, but he was only able to film certain scenes in tDK and tDKR in IMAX. In a few of those scenes the dialogue had to be dubbed in later because of the cameras noise. Interstellar was filmed almost entirely in IMAX, but they had to redesign an IMAX camera to make it handheld.

The only concern is these new IMAX cameras aren't finished yet. They're expected to be ready before production begins on Civil War, so hopefully there aren't any delays/issues between now and then.

Also, this was another good quote by Joe Russo from the interview:

“It allows us to keep rolling and do multiple takes while keeping the energy up. Our motto is you can only build a film with what you bring into the editing room, and we like to bring as much as we can. There’s an impressionistic quality to film that I’ll cherish forever, but today’s audience and younger audiences prefer the sharpness and crispness and reality they get from looking at digital.”
