Anthony Mackie Describes CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER As THE AVENGERS 1.5

Talking to Moviefone about his role in Michael Bay's Pain & Gain, Anthony Mackie has talked more about the team dynamic in Joe and Anthony Russo's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Interestingly, he describes the sequel as being The Avengers 1.5 due to the fact that S.H.I.E.L.D. obviously puts a team together in order to stop Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier!

"First, I’ll say that being a part of it is great. I think that Marvel has it down to a science and they’ve been very deliberate about what they want and what they don’t want out in the world. And they’re very focused on timelines as far as releases and stuff. This movie, "Captain America," has kind of become "Avengers 1.5"; if you look at the cast they’ve put together, if you look at the number of characters that are in this movie. I mean, it’s a huge number of superheroes and characters. The basic idea is that you have Captain America, Black Widow, and Falcon that get together to take down the Winter Soldier."

Don Cheadle (War Machine/Iron Patriot) also recently teased a possible appearance in the movie, and with S.H.I.E.L.D. set to play a major part in Cap's mission to take down his former sidekick, it should be very interesting to see how Captain America: The Winter Soldier does actually end up setting up Joss Whedon's sequel to The Avengers. What do you guys think about this?

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" will pick-up where "Marvel’s The Avengers" left off, as Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C.

People are going to take this waaay out of context. Yeah there's a large cast but that's perfect. We will get to see a movie that focuses on Cap's leadership capabilities as he leads his squad against the Winter Soldier. Just because there's a large cast doesn't mean he won't be the focus.

While some Marvel movies have been better than others and some are freaking amazing and outstanding, ever Marvel movie has always been at least good, if not great. I'm really looking forward to this.

I agree @@TheTaskmaster, but from the sound of it, this is exactly what I DON'T want to see.

They have already departed from the traditional Captain America look with the "Agent Rogers"-esque costume.

While I can see them wanting to point him out and make him shine as a leader of a team, this ISN'T the time to do it. Do it with the team he leads, The Avengers. Don't make a CAPTAIN AMERICAN movie AVENGERS 1.5.

Im more interested at what Cap decides to do at the end when it comes to Winter Soldier/Bucky...Does he follow orders and takes him down or does he defy SHIELD and try to save his friend?

Shame Hawkeye is missing out on all the fun. I am curious as to why he isn't involved in any non-Avengers Phase II movie. Heck, even Banner is in IM3.

I'm really excited about this movie...but the Cap shouldn't need that much help...I really don't want Black Widow fighting along the Cap like in Avengers,it kinda felt like they brought the Cap down to BW and Hawkeye's level, when he is so much more then those characters.

I had forgotten that Emyly V. is on the movie too.

Is it possible that at some point there will be a team with..

Cap
Black Widow
Falcon
Sharon Carter
and Maria Hill?

TheRedSkull

I think this is good. Cap is more SHIELD influenced and in turn is more Avengers-ish in the modern day. Had ths been a pre-frozen Cap adventure, I'd think otherwise.

And bring on Agent Rogers! We've had too much patriotic ol' fashioned mentality
TheGambitFreak
TheGambitFreak - 4/28/2013, 4:55 PM
@jascurio Cause Renner isn't exactly fond of the amount of screen time he got in Avengers.... "So, your other movie, Avengers, tell us about that." "Am I even still in it?" He has a right to be bitching. Most of his stuff in Avengers was scraped on the editing board. Some of which can be seen in the deleted scenes. Scarlett and him both went through too much training/choreography for it not to been seen, honestly.
TheRedSkull
TheRedSkull - 4/28/2013, 4:58 PM
But yeah in context with what he's saying, it's got a great cast, so people will feel like they've got another big assemble movie. But this will be Caps movie

He's a great addition to this movie. Even with the Rock in it, I personally think Mackie stole every scene in Pain and Gain. Great flick, even a Michael Bay film can be a good movie with a great chemistry amongst the cast and great actors. Im sure this guy will hold his own in a superhero movie.
TheFox
TheFox - 4/28/2013, 5:06 PM
Poor Cap. Apparently Marvel has absolutely no faith in his ability to carry a movie by himself. First he gets saddled with the Howling Commandos, and now this...

Well, at least this time, he's actually working with OTHER superheroes, instead of a random bunch of ethnic stereotypes.

Brubaker's Winter Soldier had a decent sized supporting cast too. Pretty sure Falcon, Iron Man, and Sharon Carter were featured. I think this movie should be able to keep the focus on Cap even with the others there.

TheGambitFreak
TheGambitFreak - 4/28/2013, 5:19 PM
@TheFox If not SHIELD or the Howling Commandos, who just the [frick] would Steve just work with? Hmmm? Iron Man has War MAchine/Pepper, Jarvis, etc. Thor has Sif and the Warrior's Three. Bruce has Betty, etc.

It's called supporting characters.

By following your logic, Marvel has no faith in Iron Man cause they put Rhodey in there. DC has no faith in Batman cause they put Catwoman in TDKR.

Cap never nor needs to fly solo. His name is Captain after all, he's a leader. A leader is someone who leads something or one. Therefore, he must have someone to give orders too.

Besides, what the actual [frick] would Cap do in a movie if he didn't have sidekicks or supporting characters? Eat nachos and box all day?

Pfffft. And you claim you are a comic fan... Yet you don't wanna see comic book characters, please, just

Since Cap was revised in the early 60's he's been associated with either SHIELD or has had a good sized supportin' cast, (Falcon, Bucky/Nomad, Sharon Carter, etc..) As long as they have Cap be Cap, his personalty and fightin' abilities, I'll be happy.

Also, really want to see how they handle Cap/Winter Soldier... As far as Avengers 1.5, I'd of said it was more from the fact that Joss wanted to make the second avengers more personal, well you don't get more personal than this story line.
