Robert Redford Affirms ‘Head of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Role In CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

Reiterating why he's joining the Marvel sequel, veteran actor Robert Redford has acknowledged his role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier not to be just a senior official, but the HEAD of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Amid a press roundtable for the veteran actor’s latest directional effort, political thriller The Company You Keep, Spinoff Online spoke with Robert Redford about his role in Marvel Studios’

own upcoming “political thriller,” Captain America: The Winter Soldier. While his role was reported as a senior leader of the Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson)-directed S.H.I.E.L.D. organization, Redford clarifies, “Well, the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. The head of S.H.I.E.L.D,” Reiterating why he’s joining the Marvel sequel, he added, “The Captain America thing is just a very simple thing. I wanted to do something different. I wanted to do something just to be different. Something bold, different. And that felt like a good thing to do. That was it, nothing more to it than that. Well, it’s bold in terms of expectations, I guess.”

Meanwhile, IMDB recently added another S.H.I.E.L.D.-affiliated character, established in the comics as Jack Rollins, set to be portrayed by Callan Mulvey. Anyhow, filming for Captain America: The Winter Soldier has reportedly commenced at Marvel Studios/Manhattan Beach Studios in California. What do you think?

Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” will pick-up where the highly anticipated “Marvel’s The Avengers” leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D., and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world. Starring Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Emily VanCamp, Toby Jones, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Georges St-Pierre, Maximiliano Hernández, Hayley Atwell, Scarlett Johansson with Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Redford, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is directed Anthony Russo & Joe Russo from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely and is based on Marvel’s classic super hero Captain America, who first appeared in the comic book “Captain America #1” in March, 1941. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is presented by Marvel Studios and produced by Kevin Feige and co-produced by Nate Moore. The executive producers are Louis D'Esposito, Alan Fine, Stan Lee, Victoria Alonso and Michael Grillo. The film releases April 4, 2014, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. In addition to “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on other iconic Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014; “Marvel's The Avengers” sequel on May 1, 2015; and “Ant-Man” on November 6, 2015!

So is Redford like SHIELDS Emperor and Samuel L. Jackson is SHIELD Vadar, because that's what its sounding like.

@LEEE777, I would actually see him as Tony Stark and Paul Newman as Captain America

I thought Nick Fury was the head of SHIELD?

Maybe he's Coulson's Dad! Or Nick Fury's conspicuously white Dad, Nick Fury Sr.! Or BOTH!

AC1 - 4/2/2013, 10:43 AM
He'll probably play someone in the World Security Council from The Avengers.

Or maybe Nick Fury will be fired in CATWS, and Robert Redford's character will be his replacement? Kind of fits in with the 'political thriller' angle, right?

He's doing it because it's going to be [frick]ing awesome!

The man is selective in what he chooses because he can, and he only chooses projects that he wants to be a part of.

I'm hoping this makes all the dumb ass claims of him being "the white nick fury" or "old dum dum dugan" out the damn window for sure.

WAIT A SECOND!

CATWS will probably include flashbacks, either to WWII or some time later, in order to explain The Winter Soldier's existence and his activities through time.

Perhaps the flashbacks will be so prevalent that the story will be presented as one which jumps back and forth between the past and the present day.

With that in mind, maybe Robert Redford is playing the head of SHIELD from the past, before Nick Fury became the director. Perhaps he's playing Colonel Rick Stoner (appeared in FURY #1, 1994), the director of SHIELD when Nick Fury first joined SHIELD, who was assassinated by HYDRA.

This is such fabulous news. Redford is the man! I've been pretty leery of this film since the Russo brothers announcement but this news and the release of the concept art with Cap vs. the Winter Soldier have got me pumped now.

I'm thinking that Redford is the MCU president, who would technically be the head of S.H.I.E.L.D.
