Interview with Joe Johnston on Captain America: The First Avenger

Joe Johnston, the director of Captain America: The First Avenger, on Evans’ shocking transformation, and why the film’s title won’t be the same in every country.

What kind of superhero is Steve Rogers after he's transformed into Captain America?

"He's not a superhero in the true sense of the word. He can't fly or see through walls. But if you imagine the world's fastest, strongest Olympian athletes, and add 25, 30 percent, that's Steve Rogers. He's not bulletproof, but he can do a lot of things we can't do. He's basically an everyman, and because he's not a superman, I think audiences will be able to relate to it more."

What went into figuring out how to film the pre-transformation scenes?

"There wasn't time to do that Cast Away thing where we'd stop production for a while and let Chris lose 50 pounds or whatever it was that Tom Hanks lost."

So instead you used CG to put Chris’s head on another, smaller actor’s body.

"Even that actor wasn’t as skinny as we wanted Steve to be, so in many cases we had to skinny him up [further]. And we had to skinny up Chris’s head. We did things to his hair to make him look weak. We made his skin look pale, like someone you wouldn't want in your army."

Word is that Chris was hesitant to take this role. Why do you think that was?

"I know it took him a while to decide to do the part, and I think it's because he'd been in another superhero movie [the Fantastic Four films] that didn't go as well."

In at least a few foreign countries, the film will be simply called “The First Avenger,” with no mention in the title of Captain America. How do you feel about that?

"If it was up to me, I'd just call it 'Captain America.' But there's a lot of reasons why I'm not running a studio. It's not about, 'Somebody's gonna be turned off because America is in the title.' I think it's familiarity with the character itself. They're dropping it in countries where people don't know the Captain America character. But it's still the same movie, no matter what you call it."

"But it's still the same movie, no matter what you call it."

Well said. This is a smart move on the promotional side of things. That being said, a movie simply titled 'Captain America' might sound EXTREMELY cheesey and could come across as something that's is ONLY patriotic. Adding First Avenger, sounds cool, gripping, and makes you see this in a larger scale.

"..imagine the world's fastest, strongest Olympian athletes, and add 25, 30 percent, that's Steve Rogers."

I hope this means that Cap will have a similiar physical ability to post injection Blonsky from TIH. The way he was fighting the Hulk in that movie is what I always imagined Cap could do on screen.

@ Coloso

Not that it really matters, but; Cap is significantly more powerful than Blonsky was in that film. It is the same KIND of power Cap has. Only his power (Cap), is more potent because his serum was much more powerful.

With Blonskys serum they were injecting what the TIH film alludes to as one of a few failed SS program serums witch had attempted to replicate Cap throughout the years since his original inception. They all obviously failed in some way or another at trying to duplicate the originals potency, albeit not a total failure with the serum Blonsky received in particular; also vita-rays weren't used with Blonsky as they were in Caps experiment if that does anything for you.

ThunderBolt Ross pretty well states all this saying it was shown to have some "negative side effects", or something along his desperate line of "I probably shouldn't because you'll go insane, but I'll do anything to win" kind of logic.

My point is they never came close to duplicating the results the original serum gave, as well, even when they did get some results with it, it wasn't without a bunch of serious side effects.

Whether thats because of Steve Rogers himself compared to all the others or the formula itself we don't actually know yet. But it think its safe to assume that it was a whole lot of both.

FURTHER MORE; it is as much the man who receives/wields the serums power in the metaphoric sense as it is the physical powers themselves because, in the films MCU continuity its been/is being established that the serum brings out a specific persons for lack of a better term, true self. Their true motive manifests physically with their powers... Witch would be why Blonsky grew increasingly more psychotic even before becoming Abomination and why The Red Skull looks like a monster while Cap still looked the same as he did, himself, human, only the perfect version of him, reflected physically by the Super Soldier Serum as his motives were/are good, not evil.

Spastic nerd rant, over.

@JarrenO

It's established that Cap recieved the proper Super Soldier serum and that the other's (i.e. Blonsky) did not, hence the negative side effect's. I was fully aware of this fact and for other's who are not I'm sure they will learn when the film debuts this summer.

I was referring to how Marvel Studios displayed his increased speed when he was chased by Hulk, his athletic ability, reflexes, coordination, and strength when he fought in close. Cap will have some version of this on film without the negative side effects because he recieved the vita-rays.

This is what I expect to see from Cap's movie which I'm sure Johnson will have. I fully believe that TIH was Marvel's opportunity to show us a glimpse of what Cap would be able to do in his own movie. Not withstanding Blonsky's psychotic breakdown.

@coloso. I'm glad someone else has finally made that connection! I've just spent the last 1/2 hour searching for a very d interview where Feige is discussing Easter eggs in The Incredible Hulk and he was that, as well as the serum, the way Blonsky moves and fights the Hulk in the college scene is also supposed to be a teaser for Captain America. It was on this site (I'm reasonably sure).

@CraptainAmerica

Likewise my friend! I want to see that video, hopefully I can find it thanks for the tip.

It amazes me how Marvel had the vision and foresight with each film to include these easter eggs. TIH, Iron Man, IM 2, and Thor are each like a layer of an onion. They inform each other and reveal things for the cinematic shared universe they are establishing just like there comic book's.

I knew thats what you had meant, I was just attempting to point out the difference in over all ability between Blonsky and Cap. I figured you'd already know WHY I just felt like explaining it anyway... lol JUST IN CASE

Also, how isn't this main?
Coloso
Coloso - 5/16/2011, 1:22 AM
@JarrenO

There was no need to "explain" or point out the "difference". Again, I was referring to how Marvel showed what these injections could do to a normal human being with no superhuman abilites.

They captured it perfectly on film and I was merely showing my excitement for what Johnson said to what I believe is the connection to Emil's Hulk fight scene ;)

I'm glad that JJ has referenced the fact that CA has an vulnerability to him. Really raises the stakes knowing that he Cap is going into a war situation and can get hurt.

One of the difficulties the writers had with Thor is that once he has his hammer he is pretty much indestructable - the destroyer never stood a chance in the final battle!

The first photo for this film looked like shit...i mean i really wanted to bash the hell out of it. Then i saw the new trailers and i was pretty excited, but now i'm 60-40 with Captain America on it because of Joe Johnston. Why?

@Texan...JP3 was an EMBARRASSMENT to the series. The Lost World was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better than it and was a step above the first one. All I'm sayin is that i have this fear that this movie will turn out to be another G.I. Joe. Doesn't mean it will, its' just a hunch.

What about Jumanji??

I personally think TIK would have made much more narrative sense once CA:TFA had already been out in cinemas. Plus, it might have meant we'd have had the same leading actor in both TIK and Avengers.

But I get totally what you are saying Coloso - a glimpse at the kind of visual style they will bring to Cap in his fight scenes. Gets the juices flowing.

I think Cap will be the best film of this summer. GL has got to be better than Thor if not DC will have to depend on the TDK and Cap i believe will blow them all away. But that's just me!!!!!!!!!!
