Joe Johnston Reveals He Is Signed Up For At Least One More Marvel Universe Movie

While doing an interview for his upcoming comic book movie Captain America: The First Avenger Joe Johnston revealed that he has signed on for at least one more Marvel Universe movie and says he has spoken to Marvel about doing The Winter Soldier.

Captain America: The First Avenger will be out next week and Joe Johnston has been making his rounds doing his promoting of the film. While talking with Screen Rant Johnston talked a little bit about discussions he has had with Marvel about continuing Bucky's story through a Winter Soldier film.

Said Johnston:

“I told the Marvel guys that there is a character that I’m really interested in called ‘The Winter Soldier’ and that if, ‘you guys decide to make that picture I would definitely be interested.’ It’s the Bucky Barnes story. We talked about ‘The Winter Soldier’ which is the continuation of what his story is. It’s basically that he is captured by the Russians and he’s brainwashed and turned into an assassin. But you know there are a thousand ways to go with that. I just think that it would be interesting to take a character that was in ‘Captain America’ and build a story around him. Plus, I like Sebastian Stan a lot (who played Bucky) I think he would be an interesting actor to build another feature around.”

Johnston went on to say that he has actually signed on for another Marvel Universe movie, and that he is interested in going in to Marvel's Vault to find a character that he can develop a story around.

Continued Johnston:

“Well I only signed on for two. The actors have to sign on for six, at least six, and I only sign on for two which is not to say that I wouldn’t agree to do more or that they would ask me to do more — I don’t know. But my point is that there are thousands of characters in the Marvel Universe, of which I am only familiar with a very few of them and it might be interesting to sort of go into the Marvel vault and find a character that you can develop a whole story around. I would definitely be interested in doing that.”

Catch Captain America: The First Avenger out in theaters next Friday July 22, 2011.

Not sure how to take this yet. It all depends on if how good Cap will be.

Delete that *if. Damn it, what is up with edit/delete? If this is a permanent thing, it truly sucks.

I agree with ComicsCommando. We'll see what Johnston did with Cap and how likeable Stan is as Bucky. I really liked the Winter Soldier story in the comics, but I'm not sure how good a standalone movie would be without Cap. I could see it more as a short film leading into a Captain America sequel that dealt with that story.

@ClarkKent1985 You must not read much Marvel huh?
Bucky was preserved just like Steve..
He was revived by the soviets, and becomes Winter Soldier..

This would be cool in my opinion. Bucky's my favorite character. Ed Brubaker has down a great job with him.

Winter Soldier...my god that would be awesome. Who needs a War Machine or Black Widow spin-off?! Rather see Winter Soldier than those 2.

Winter Soldier? Meh. How 'bout Moon Knight, Joe? Or Danny Rand? If he nails it with Cap, which it looks like he's going to do, I hope he digs into that vault and comes up with someone more worthy of their own feature.

just make him the main villain in cap 2/3 or something. no need for a spinoff on a character that nobody outside of marvel fans knows about and is directly connected to cap.

After the plane explodes, General Vasily Karpov and the crew of a Russian pilot submarine find Bucky's cold preserved body, minus one arm. Bucky is revived in Moscow, though,as a result of the explosion he suffers brain damage with amnesia. Scientist's attach a bionic arm, upgrading it every time technology improves. Programmed to be a Soviet assassin for Department X, under the code name The Winter Soldier.

A winter Soldier film would be a dream come true. At the very least make sure he's present in future cap films.

I would rather see heroes for hire with Luke Cage and Iron Fist than a solo iron fist movie. The idea of heroes that hire their services plus the two partners hasa a lot of potential and a fresh twist at least for the supermovieverse

Frankly, The Falcon is as dumb as Aquaman.

I know he's a scout par excellence but in a movie universe filled by superspy like Black Widow, Hawkeye and now Bucky the Falcon becomes unnecessary.

The Winter Soldier would be great!

But i think he would make a great director for Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Namor The Sub-Mariner, Nick Fury, Iron Fist, The Hands Of Shang-Chi, Deathlok, The Tomb Of Dracula or Werewolf by Night!:)

The Winter Soldier could be the start of something great. If it does good in the BO, then we could get more villain movies! My vote is for Venom, and from DC, a Zod or Joker!

@JohnTom88

your wrong The Falcon is not dumb like aquaman

since the marvel movies are a mix of 616 and Ultimate universe. they can us element of The Falcon in the Ultimate universe.

Ultimate Falcon is explorer, adventurer, and scientist plus he is an agent of SHIELD.

I think Winter Soldier would do better in a cap sequel, it's too many better characters in Marvel to give Winter Soldier his own movie.

A WS soldier movie could be good, I can kind of see it like a Bourne movie as he slowly starts to realise who he was and what happened to him. A Cap America sequel could lead into that as they try to bring him back, it might also lead into the stand alone Shield movie as Nick Fury and Co would be the organisation behind organising any mission. I see it as just another way of expanding the Marvel universe and having more crossovers of characters.
