Brie Larson was officially confirmed as Captain Marvel this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, much to the delight of fans. Larson was long rumoured as the top contendor for the role, and also had the support of Captain America star Chris Evans (who appeared with Larson in Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World). Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige spoke on the decision to cast Larson in an interview with Cinemablend, hinting that her performance and subsequent Oscar win for The Room helped her win the role.

“Listen, we set the bar very high with the first casting decision we ever made with Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. Since then, every single choice we’ve made, we have asked, ‘Could it meet that bar?’ Because that is what people expect of us, and that is what … it’s a very high bar," said Feige. "Carol Danvers needs to be as rich and textured and real as the best of our characters. Maybe even more so. And we got very lucky that Brie — who has all of those attributes, and an Academy Award now — was still very interested in signing up and joining us to bring this character to life.”

Feige also confirmed that a director has not yet been chosen for the film, though the list has been narrowed down to 10, with a decision expected to be made by the end of the summer. Until then, Feige said there are no plans for Captain Marvel to pop up in any other MCU film, “unless she does.”

Check out some more from Feige in an interview with ComicBook.com below, in which he also discusses moving forward without the original stars of the Avengers in future MCU films.
