THE MARVELS Explains Why Carol Danvers Stayed Out Of Monica Rambeau's Life For So Long - SPOILERS

Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau finally reunite in The Marvels, and the movie explains why Captain Marvel stayed out of "Lieutenant Trouble's" life for so long...

In WandaVision, we learned that Monica Rambeau held a lot of resentment towards Carol Danvers for breaking her promise to return after the events of Captain Marvel, and following a strained reunion in The Marvels, we find out exactly why Danvers stayed out of "Lieutenant Trouble's" life for so many years.

Spoilers follow.

Initially, Danvers tells Rambeau that she simply couldn't return because she was needed in so many other regions of the galaxy, and later on, we find out that Carol did visit the dying Maria Rambeau while her daughter was "Blipped." However, it's not until the final act that the truth comes out.

It turns out that when Captain Marvel destroyed the Supreme Intelligence in the first movie, she inadvertently caused catastrophic damage to the Kree home world of Hala, leaving the planet without a sun and sending Dar-Benn on her mission to seek vengeance on "The Annihilator." Danvers felt such immense guilt for her actions that she decided she couldn't face Monica again until she found a way to make things right.

Monica forgives her "Aunty Carol" and the two reconcile, with Danvers using her super-charged abilities to reignite Hala's sun and find redemption. Unfortunately, the two are soon separated again when Rambeau repairs the rift created by Dar-Benn and becomes trapped in an alternate reality (more here).

"The Marvels is far from the best Marvel Studios has to offer, but it's difficult not to get swept up in its infectious energy... to a point," we said in our review. "A disjointed third act lets it down, but a game cast and plenty of fun/funny moments elevate it above more lacklustre MCU fare (we're looking at you, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumnia)."

"In Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.”

The film also stars Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon. Nia DaCosta directs, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Mary Livanos and Matthew Jenkins serve as executive producers. The screenplay is by Megan McDonnell, Nia DaCosta, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells.

The Marvels will begin its international rollout on November 8, and was recently granted a China release on November 10, day-and-date with North America.

You had the set-up to have Monica be mad at Carol for involving her mother Maria in the past, resulting in her mother getting cancer (from going into space in the proto-quinjet) and dying of the cancer during the time when Monica was blipped away. A method of exploring grief and to have both Carol and Monica reminisce over the past and eventual pay-off with the after-credits scene of Monica meeting a variant of Maria.

Such incompetent [frick]ing writers they not only ignored all of that which was in WandaVision, the main thing you should be referring to in order to understand Monica, but they replaced it with the plot of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen with the main villain wanting to steal Earth's sun xD

@Scarilian - Why didnt Fury get cancer?

@HammerLegFoot -
I probably phrased it poorly.

I meant that Monica thinks that is the reason, given her cancer could have presented itself after going into space and Maria grew up hearing stories about her mothers exploits with Carol - most notably going into space with Carol.

It's misplaced anger as part of Monica's grief, Monica wanting someone to blame for her mothers death and also the blip as a whole, so why not Captain Marvel for not showing up soon enough to stop Thanos in Infinity War and for taking her mother into space and potentially exposing her to space radiation?

Just the idea would be enough for Carol to doubt herself... could she have been responsible for getting her friend killed? Was it her fault the blip happened because she did not check up on Earth? This self-doubt could then be used similar to Spider-man 2 where her doubt/stress causes her powers to fade or weaken (Avoiding the random swapping of places)

The movie intentionally wouldn't clarify whether Maria actually did get cancer from the journey into space in the proto Quinjet because what gave her cancer is not as important as the emotional journey that Carol and Monica are going through after her death.

It just seems like they had the perfect set-up for a lot of character related drama with the characters and never explored it.

"Why didnt Fury get cancer?"

I'd just go with the idea that they aren't 100% certain she got it from the proto quinjet, that being an idea Monica would have due to her misplaced anger, so the movie would never clarify if it was.

If it was, then Nick Fury got less radiation exposure OR its taking longer to develop ;)

Clearly she doesn't know Monica at all. Monica encountered a woman who used mind control to enslave an entire town over effectively playing house and her response to said woman simply stopping the enslavement was "they'll never know what you sacrificed for them".

@Origame - For all the inconsistencies in the writing lately, this one actually makes sense to me. People tend to act irrationally when it comes to childhood trauma. She feels abandoned by her “aunt” so she will hold a different grudge than she would towards someone else.

Monica defending Wanda was dumb, but her being more upset with Carol makes sense to me.

@mountainman - it's not really a critique of the marvels so much as a jab at how amoral their characters are now.

Monica can very easily have been written to be ok with the near mass genocide or even happy about it based on her character in wandavision.

@Origame - Oh I get that argument for sure. I thought WandaVision was a great show, up until the finale tried to excuse her actions. Wanda turning villainous isn’t the problem, it’s that the MCU seems to want to paint the behaviors as sympathetic. If Mojica was a true hero, she should have condemned Wanda for those terrible actions. One can empathize with a situation without sympathizing.

@mountainman - exactly. Then you have Natasha who spent her entire career as an avenger trying to redeem her past behavior totally ok with her sister burying an entire prison in an avalanche with no word to her about being reckless or anything.

@Origame - That prison break scene is right when that movie went off the rails for me. The first half of the movie was excellent. It had a very Mission Impossible meets Bourne Identity vibe. Exactly what Black widow needs. Then staring at the prison break, the rest of the movie was terrible (besides the family dinner scene which was actually quite nice).

A similar thing happened with Shang Chi. 1st half was really cool, then they went to the mythical land and we got Trevor, Morris, and lame CGI demon army battle. Should have kept the martial arts vibe of the 1st half of the movie going.

@mountainman - oh it was so disappointing they ditched the martial arts sh!t for more typical mcu cgi fest.

@Origame - There was a little in the first half I didn’t like (mainly Awkwafina), but I mostly enjoyed it. Then the flashback sequence between dad and mom had a crouching tiger hidden dragon vibe. So awesome.

I would have rather the finale be more like Civil Wars where it was just a small intimate battle between father and son, and maybe throw the sister in there too.

I like all of the character drama and ideas they had. Unfortunately, to fit everything in, nothing was executed on screen with subtlety or room to explore the material. So, they had to make everything that should have been compelling either a quick gag or cringeworthy exposition. None of it is felt, nothing has ramifications, we just hurry past everything to get to the fight.

And most frustrating is there is GOOD STUFF to explore... this is the time to explore it, right? Why are we doing the thing, but not doing the things? We set all this up in pervious movies and TV shows.... now were just gonna hurry up and breeze past all of it in less than 2 hours?

The Marvels deserved more. I was expecting to not give a damn about this movie, but im actually upset it wasnt better.

@TheVandalore - 100% agree. I enjoyed the movie as a piece of throwaway fluff, but there was so much more potential to explore the more dramatic character moments. I have a feeling DaCosta would have if she was given the chance. The entire last act felt like a Feige mandate.

For context... imagine fitting everything in WandaVision into an hour and 45 min movie.... NONE of Wanda or Visions development happens. Could you fit Loki season 1 or 2 into a movie? Maybe, but would there be the same impact or the same ability to make us care about the characters?

Some stories work perfect as a short story. Some stories need time to develop. Disney needs to decide which story needs to be a show or what event can be showcased as a film.

The movie was quite good! It was straight forward and a lot of fun.

We’ve gotta stop trying to always be these pseudo critics and remember how to just be a fan of the material. Always trying to dissect every little aspect to find flaws is getting exhausting.

The film was good! Go see it. Have fun.

Captain Marvel (2019): “Tell the Supreme Intelligence that I’m not under its control anymore and the next time you see me I’m gonna kick its ass.”

The audience: “Oooh, I can’t wait to see that happen in Captain Marvel 2!”

The Marvels (2023): “Oh, all that happened off screen! STBY!”

The whole relationship between Monica and Carol was so manufactured to have conflict. Monica is a grow woman who should understand Carol was out saving planets and galaxies (including her own life in Endgame). Grow up.

@MrDandy - Bro....Monica got blip'd back while Carol was on Earth and it doesnt sound like she was there for her at all. On top of that....It seems like Captain Marvel made trips to Earth and never saw Monica. How else is she supposed to feel...

Unnecessary drama. Especially after you establish that they both work with Nick Fury.

Saw the movie yesterday. It was okay. It was fun but much like Ant-man 3 their felt like there were no stakes and they bypassed ALOT of emotional beats. The Marvels had like 5 occasions where they really could have pulled on your heart strings much like how GOTG3 did so well....but quickly just moved on repeatedly. Story was meh....Feels like if they moved a couple of things around and fleshed out some more scenes, the movie would have been Marvel back to form.

I actually was more interested in the revelation that Carol did stop by on those 5 years after Infinity War to check on Maria, so I was okay with the guilt-driven self-imposed punishment she gave to herself when the real truth came out. It's a little overused but not uncommon.
