2022 marks Spider-Man's 60th anniversary, and Marvel Comics has announced today that Zeb Well will be taking the helm of Amazing Spider-Man when it relaunches with a new #1 issue this April. He's been part of this current "Beyond" era, but is perhaps best known for the iconic "Shed" storyline that delivered one of the boldest - and goriest - Lizard stories ever told.

Artist John Romita Jr. will join Wells, and Marvel Comics has shared a few details about what to expect from this run. in the series, Peter's on the outs with the FF. He's on the outs with the Avengers. He’s even on the outs with Aunt May. Why? Well, after a terrible and mysterious incident, no one wants to see Spider-Man - except for Doctor Octopus. Ock’s on Spider-Man’s tail and the Master Planner has something truly terrible planned for when he gets his tentacles on Spidey.

All that, and Tombstone makes a move that will remind readers why he’s one of Spider-Man’s most terrifying villains (something we get a taste of below along with the return of a JMS-era baddie).

"Spider-Man doesn’t turn sixty every year," says Spider-Editor Nick Lowe, "and we are going big with this run cramming it with the biggest WTF moments Spidey has ever had. Zeb and JRJR will go down in history as one of the best creative teams ever!"

Wells adds, "I've waited my entire career to work with John Romita Jr. To team up with him on Amazing Spider-Man for the character's 60th anniversary is so exciting words can't describe it. We're gonna have a blast." The artist, meanwhile, is every bit as enthusiastic: "Marvel has allowed me to get back to work on this amazing character, and work with another brilliant writer, Zeb Wells! The stories are stunning and I am reading the scripts with a grin and wonderment."

For a second there I thought we were getting a 60 year old Peter Parker. And now I actually kinda wanna see that

@bkmeijer - I think you want Spider-Man: Reign.

bkmeijer2 - 1/13/2022, 3:21 PM
@TheManWithoutFear - in a sense yeah, but instead set in the present and not some futuristic police state

@bkmeijer - might be worth checking out Spider-Man: Life Story by Chip Zdarsky and Mark Bagley. It's kind of a reimagining/homage of Spidey's history from his origin in the '60s to the present day, with each issue taking place roughly a decade after the previous issue and with Peter and his supporting cast aging in real time. I think each issue also kind of reimagines a classic story from that decade.

I actually only heard of it a few days ago so I haven't even managed to read it myself, but it seems really interesting and may actually be a way you can read about a 60 year old Peter!

@AC1 - haven't heard about it either (probably since it's from 2019, and I haven't been up to date with comics at all), but it definitely does sound like a fun read. Might give it a try soon

@TheManWithoutFear Reign is terrible, IMO. It's how NOT to do a dark Spider-Man story 101. The Spider-Girl series had a much better take on an older, wearier Peter.

@bkmeijer - Reign is pretty terrible and tbe fandom have a lot of problems with it, but I won't spoil it for you here.

@TheWarThor - yeah I know. Don't really like the whole futuristic police state angle I mentioned earlier

@bkmeijer - Didn't Straczinsky do that when old Spidey fought the police at the cemetery? He was supposed to die then, I don't remember how it ended.

@jj2112 - not sure. Do remember some of the other stuff Straczinsky did I don't like (Spider-Man powers being mystical and the whole Norman/Gwen thing)

i know he is devisive but i've always loved JRJR's Spider-Man. just the right balance of blockiness, looseness & dynamism that captures Spidey's chaotic combat style perfectly. it's like (somewhat) more refined Frank Miller.

I’ve never understood the fascination people have with his artwork. I’ve seen better art in the DC and Marvel kids books I’ve purchased for my kids

JMS and JRJr's Amazing Spider-Man run is still my all-time favourite, so I'll never not be happy when he's pencilling the character. Feels like he rushes a bit these days as his work looks a little sloppy here and there, but for the most part, this looks awesome. Also, Digger!

@JoshWilding - The younger me remembers fondly how good JRJR's penciling work on ASM was back in the early 80s, when JRJR had just started his career (so this is going back 40 years ago). JRJR was so well received by fans that Jim Shooter quickly moved him over to Marvel's then-flagship title Uncanny X-Men, to take over after Paul M. Smith left after less than a year.

@GeneralZod - To be fair back in the 80s Marvel and DC still had strict House Style rules that didn't give artists much wiggle room to use their own styles. It wasn't until the 90s when they started giving artists some breathing room and, even if we're stuck with Liefelds, Lands, and JRJRs I think we're ultimately better off for it.

@GeneralZod - I actually enjoyed JRJR's art well into the early 2000's, but lately he seems to be kind of phoning it in, you know. He's still drawn some pretty iconic Spider-Man panels over the years, nonetheless.

@Franshu - JRJR is also 65, retirement age. The fact is as our bodies age, we lose skill with almost anything physical, and penciling is no exception. I still tip my hat to him for having the work ethic and desire to get behind the easel/drafting board and continue to hammer out interior pages, not just covers. Of the 80s-era artists, is there anyone else that is as active as JRJR? I don't think so.

GeneralZod - 1/14/2022, 10:28 AM
@Reeds2Much - I had an original art page by JRJR from an early 80s issue of ASM, i remember buying it at a small convention in 85ish for $50. Along with a Gil Kane page from Sword of the Atom, and a John Tottleben page from Saga of Swamp Thing. I had bought those for about $25 each. I sold them to my brother for a pittance about 12 years ago.

Not gonna lie, Romita Jr's art makes me very nostalgic for the early '00s.
Also, 60? Spidey is really "young" compared to most super heroes, not that long from now, Supes is turning a century old!

@TheHumanSpider2 - Supes, Bats and even Joker have a good 30 some years on Spidey. Pretty crazy to think about right?

Everyone speculated after Hickman left X-men that he was going to do ASM. But this is clearly not the case. I wonder what he does next?

I know the answer is just "nobody stays dead in superhero comics", but didn't Digger blow-up into a pile of goo at the end of his one and only story?

What is with the sudden resurgence in the white rabbit character? For some odd reason she has popped up a lot in the last 10 years or so after being put out to pasture prior to that.
