CBM Civil Wars #1: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. v Arrow

Civil War is apparently a thing! So why not, at least officially, make it a thing on this website. Notice the word CIVIL, as in 'let's be civil!'. First up, let's have a battle between the TV shows Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Arrow.

Hi all! Long time reader, first time contributor. Reading through the comments, almost every thread starts with:

"Marvel is great! DC is great! Marvel sucks! DC Sucks! Here... we... Go...! Stars Flame Wars! Why Can't we all get along! Josh has done it again!" *repeat* *repeat*

I'm more than happy for those kind of comments again! Kinda the point of the thread. But how about we show our work kids? A carefully crafted opinion even! I'd do a poll... but I can't work out how.

Little doubt, that in TV World, the biggest DC TV Show is Arrow (Flash might catch up) and biggest Marvel (well, only at this time) is Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Mini Batman v Mini Fury

So which is better?

Style

Arrow: Using heroes and villains straight from the Comic Book pages, Arrow is an action packed series, dark and gritty, with a large overarching story, but still with episodic fun. It does fall back on CW Soap Opera roots, with love triangles emerging between several characters and parental issues a plenty.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Trying to carve itself its own corner of the sky in the ever expanding MCU, the show focuses on mostly 6 characters as they episodically deal with the strangeness of the world they live in. Emphasises the weirdness and mystery of the world through character study, hinting at a large overarching plot, and although relationship complexities exist, it is lighter on the soap.

My opinion: I favour the style of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. over Arrow, but if I'm honest, Arrow executes itself better (at least in the early stages). I'm not a fan of the 'will-they-won't-they, who-are-my-real-parents' stories that can be taken from most TV shows, but Arrow knows what it is and does it very well. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. meanwhile took quite a while to get out of the gate, and though I enjoyed every episode, I understand the frustration of the apparent lack of direction early on.

Winner: ARROW

Acting

Scares me.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.:

Clark Gregg was outstanding in the MCU Movies, and still has plenty of time to shine in the TV Series, but shows signs that he isn't as suited to a full time TV gig. Don't get me wrong, I still like him. Ming-Na is magnificent as Agent May, and has gravitas while still making you laugh - the stand out from the show, and we knew she was quality going in.

Brett Dalton as Grant Ward really shows his acting chops after the big Hydra reveal and is an actor I really enjoy watching. I find Chloe Bennet as Skye endearing, realising I'm in the minority, but her acting is a big one dimensional at times.

The chemistry between Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) is the real stand out, while newcomer Nick Blood's Lance Hunter is a breath of fresh air.

All in all, I think S.H.I.E.L.D. has a solid cast and great for an ensemble.

Only call centre call I'd take

Arrow:

Stephen Amell is a very solid leading man. He is subtle in character differences in flashbacks and present day, but may lack a bit of the gruff that say Christian Bale bought to Batman. They choose wisely with this guy though, and I'm disappointed he was overlooked in the DCCU.

Emily Bett Rickards, not originally a regular, is the stand out here. Though playing a cliche type character (Female computer geek that is hot all the time, but because she wears glasses we are meant to believe she isn't), but she plays it up amazingly. Not huge on the Oliver/Felicty relationship myself, but understand its appeal. She brings light to some dreary scenes!

Other cast members have had some great moments. Susanna Thompson's Moira was pivotal in season 2, Paul Blackthorne has his pivotal scenes, villains John Barrowman and Manu Bennett all created very real tension and raised the stakes, and David Ramsey's Diggle is a solid character.

But my real issue is with Katie Cassidy, Willa Holland and Colin Donnell. Found them all to be largely redundant at times, and in particular find Katie Cassidy's one dimensional performances irritating. Just my opinion. Give me Amell, Rickards and Ramsey in the Arrow-cave talking about creating computer code over Cassidy and Haynes having dramatic scenes any day.

Winner: AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

Writing

Aww... snap

Arrow:

Head writers Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg have created a solid world, vivid characters and exciting climaxes (season 1 final one of the best I've seen).

... I just wish they'd lay off the soap. EVERY Teeny show has done it, and I know they need to do it for the show they are on, but take a page from what Veronica Mars use to do. Have the soap, but have it be part of the story, not adjacent to it. Will likely have people disagree with me here.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Who to trust?

Head writers Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen and Jeffrey Bell came out of the gates slowly, I'll give it that. But felt they have remained true to the goal of the series, and stayed on track. After the Hydra reveal, EVERY episode in my opinion has just gone from strength to strength. All the foundations in the early start really coming to a head, while still incorporating new things into the world.

Winner: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Directing

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.:

Feel the show has lacked a bit of direction. Thought Joss Whedon's imagery in the pilot was top notch, but not much else to really point to other than that. Feel they need to find a head director going forward.

Arrow:

Arrow, on the other hand, has really created Starling City. I love the feel, and I love the differences between flashbacks and present day. Hats off to John Behring and his crew.

Winner: ARROW

In the end, it all comes to individual opinion.

They both have huge strengths, they both have weaknesses.

Me? S.H.I.E.L.D.'s steady improvement and world beating makes the show a must-watch for me, while Arrow's soap can leave me a bit frustrated. So Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for me... just.

Sound off below!

Remember, CIVIL war. Civil!

AoS is clearly the superior show. Way better than the teen soap opera dramas on the cw and much better than gotham too.

AoS has gotten much better, while Arrow has gone down the crapper.

So AoS > Arrow

My only gripe about agents of shield is that I wish they would bring in more comic book characters. Bring in a bunch of lesser known characters to make it more interesting. Bring back deathlock as an allie to shield, that would be good.

Season one VS season 1 goes to Arrow.
Season 2 so far has been going to AOS.

Nice editorial, but I still don't understand why some people insist on comparing AoS with Arrow. The two are like Apples and oranges. The thing is, if we're going to compare TV shows, they should at least be similar in some way. This should be between AoS and Gotham.

BTW, I do believe that Flash is better than these two.

AOS is still garbage. How anyone can say it's better than Arrow in ANY way is beyond me.

arrow couldn't hold my attention past episode 5 of season 1,as for agents of shield it started off average but by sticking with it has paid off & its really good now.

Arrow is a better show.

How is this a Civil War? Wouldn't it be more like Arrow vs Gotham? AoS vs, well they don't have anybody to battle until Agent Carter and the Netflix shows.

Agents Of Shield is a legitimate production while Arrow is always trying to emulate something else.
Arrow has some fancy fight scenes but they hold no weight. Arrow is a show about one very stupid serial killer who somehow persuades better people to aid him in his journey of insolence as he combats other killers.

If Stephen Amell were cast to play a log then he's a great actor. Though he is so resoundingly boring and lifeless as Oliver/Arrow some may think the character is written that way. There have been moments requiring facial movement by Amell and a show of emotion. The result is piss poor, handicapped acting to a laughable degree.

The worst aspect of Arrow though is it's writing, lack of original style and premise. The show brings nothing new to the table. But if you want a poor man's version of Nolan's Batman, you'll love Arrow, because that is what it is.

In a way Arrow is Greg Berlanti's fap fantasy to Nolan's movies. The world would be better if Berlanti kept his Nolanic fantasies to himself. Perhaps sharing them with only those with no appetite for ingenuity or originality.

The numbers don't lie. Arrow is an unwatchable bore. A loathsome dud. Which is why Arrow's ratings are the lowest of all live action CBTV shows. And why every CBTV show on the air was recognized by fans as worthy of People's Choice Awards nominations, EXCEPT FOR ARROW.

The people have spoken: "Arrow has failed this city!" they say. It's not just the opinion of the few, it's the opinion of the overwhelming majority of people who watch every CBTV show except for Arrow.

@ADv3point0

C'mon now...They didn't vote Twilight as best film, they voted it as favorite film. Two completely different things and you know it.

I myself, AoS all the way. The only thing I like about Arrow is the fight choreography. It's second to none, and better than some movies. The acting is atrocious all around, led by Mr. Rigid Stephen Amell. Flash has shown that (in the one episode I've seen) a CW show can have some quality acting.

I love the storylines in AoS, and the way they tie everything neatly together. The direction can be a drawback, as you can sometimes tell that it's a different director with a different style.

AoS has also shown significant "improvement" in acting. I use the quotation marks because I don't think the actors have improved at all. I have said from the beginning that all the actors (including Chloe Bennett) have real talent, and were simply playing the type of character they were told to. Brett Dalton and Iain De Caestecker have been the leaders of this charge. Dalton's turn to Hydra and subsequent role have shown he is a powerhouse as far as television goes. And De Caestecker's brain-damage storyline has given him a great chance to showcase his immense range.

All in all, I gotta say AoS is easily the superior show, but that's just my opinion. Both shows have fans (albeit AoS has a lot more), and both have shown that CBTV shows have a place in primetime TV, and have been pioneers in this generation of CBTV.

Mainly I'm just screwin with ya. But yeah, there's a massive difference. The Oscars has certain criteria that needs to be met to gain nominations. People's choice doesn't. It's just what regular people like. Not critics, not movie buffs, just people.

But it's all good buddy, just wanted to take a jab...lol. Couldn't let Pasto have all the fun.

Arrow is my favorite right now, but it's a guilty pleasure. At times, it's a bit too 90210, if you know what I mean. AoS started rough last season, but has steadily improved. I look forward to both of those shows, as well as Flash.

But they're all four-star shows. We don't have any five-star superhero shows at the level of Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones.

(I haven't decided if Gotham is three or four stars yet. I think it has potential to go either way. For now, I'm watching. I haven't watched Constantine yet, but I mean to...)

Rating system: 5* - excellent / absolutely essential / "A", 4* - good / recommended / "B", 3* - ok / worthwhile / "C", 2* - sub-par / tolerable / "D", 1* - awful / epic fail / "F".
