The Weekly Watch List (07/18): Five Must-Buy Comic Books

DC don't have as many big titles out this week as Marvel, but with the likes of Captain Marvel #1, Justice League #11 and The Secret Service #3 out, which comic books should you be buying? Hit the jump to find out!

1. DAREDEVIL #15

Surprised that Avengers Vs. X-Men #8 isn't at the top of the list? Well, how can any title other than the now Eisner Award winning series NOT be this week's most essential read? Writer Mark Waid (who also won an Eisner Award this past weekend for this work on Daredevil) has left the Man Without Fear stranded in Latveria not only blind, but without the rest of his senses as well! This is a terrifying and unusual situation for Matt Murdock to find himself in, and the plot also continues to thicken back in Hell's Kitchen. What exactly did Foggy find in Matt's desk to make him decide that he no longer wishes to work with him? As good as the story being told is, new series artist Chris Samnee also impresses with his eye-catching and colourful artwork. Buy it!

2. AVENGERS VS. X-MEN #8

The Avengers and X-Men may be at war, but Avengers Vs. X-Men #8 may reveal some serious issues between the members of the Phoenix Five after the last issue saw a duplicitous Emma Frost goad Namor into attacking Wakanda. Previews have shown him doing exactly that, destroying the city and leaving the Avengers under the assumption that this is all Scott Summers' doing. Brian Michael Bendis writes this instalment as Adam Kubert takes over on art duties. The event hasn't been perfect so far, but it HAS made for a far more enjoyable read than the past few from Marvel such as Siege and Fear Itself. There are just four issues to go after this one, so expect the pace to really pick up as Avengers Vs. X-Men rockets towards its conclusion.

3. CAPTAIN MARVEL #1

This week is clearly a great one for Marvel as they also take the #3 spot on the list with Kelly Sue DeConnick's Captain Marvel #1. The publisher doesn't have any major titles with leading female characters, so this will likely be a welcome addition to many readers and Ms. Marvel fans will surely be glad to have her back in the spotlight. If last week's Avenging Spider-Man #9 is anything to go by, DeConnick has a fantastic handle on Carol Danvers and this new series has an awful lot of promise. With stunning and unique artwork from Dexter Soy, there's no doubting that it's a visually stunning book, so here's hoping that the new look and attitude for Captain Marvel will result in a brand new flagship title for Marvel. Definitely worth checking out for new and old fans alike if recent previews are anything to go by.

4. JUSTICE LEAGUE #11

It may be a fairly quiet week for DC, but their flagship book from Geoff Johns and Jim Lee continues to impress. The last issue saw the team at the mercy of new villain David Graves, while the solicitation for Justice League #11 promises "The New 52" debut of Element Woman. As many Avengers titles as Marvel currently has, none of them quite match the storytelling and character dynamics of this title. Of course, while the main story will more than likely continue to deliver, let us not forget the brilliant back-up tale by Johns and Gary Frank featuring the origin story of this version of Shazam, Billy Batson. So far, the story has made for an engrossing read, and the perfect introduction to those unfamiliar with the character. This is all leading to his full debut in Justice League #0 before Shazam joins the ranks of the team next year.

5. UNCANNY X-MEN #16

Kieron Gillen's Uncanny X-Men has been one of Marvel's best titles since it was relaunched with a new #1 issue following the events of Schism. In fact, the writer is responsible for a lot of their best books (seriously, go and read Journey Into Mystery) and it's a great shame that he wasn't given a role in the core Avengers Vs. X-Men series. However, the writer uses this book to flesh out the event and characters, and the Phoenix Five's attack on Mr. Sinister's subterranean city promises to make for a very interesting read. Sinister clearly has his own plans for the Phoenix with his Madelyne Pryor clones, and with the brilliant Daniel Acuna on art, this is one damn good looking comic book. With rumours indicating that the writer will be moving on to a new Iron Man series in October, enjoy his X-Men tales while you still can...

THE BEST OF THE REST...

6. THE SECRET SERVICE #5

7. NIGHTWING #11

8. BEFORE WATCHMEN: SILK SPECTRE #2

9. INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #521

10.GREEN LANTERN CORPS #11

A list without Wonder Woman is a wrong list. That comic is amazing.

There's no way I'm the only one that thinks Uncanny X-men is complete trash. Honestly that is the worst Marvel comic I've ever read. And I'm not trolling. I feel like I'm GETTING trolled by these people who claim this book is good.

Hey Josh, I really love this feature; keep up all the great work here. I'd love to hear your quick take on Silk Spectre, if only in the comments section.

I'm already a die hard Cooke fan, but having a hard time mustering up excitement to give this a read

PS can't WAIT to see all Mike Allred does to Daredevil as well

Justice League has been great, and I've been sticking with quite a few of the 'New 52' titles; AQUAMAN (one of, if not THE best) GL, GL Corps, Batman, Dark Knight, Nightwing, Batman&RobinDetective, Blue Beatle, Suicide Squad (underrated)

I also recommend getting out of the confort zone and trying some titles out of the big 2, namely this week's Saga and Skullkickers from Image.

NO Geoff Johns book is a "must buy." I have too much respect for my own intelligence (and good writing).

Intruder & IM53:
agreed. Love Martin & Rivera[s], but how excited are you Mike Allred is doing #17!

@JohnnyKrypton Agreed. Seriously, josh, give other stuff a try and you won't regret it. Because sitcom talk Justice League and a really bad (but very interesting in concept) Marvel event can't qualify for must-buy. And don't get me started on these Green Lantern books...
BuckyCap

@GambitFreak - The best read from the New 52 so far is Aquaman. That is really saying something though, because quite of few of the titles are outstanding.

Great time to be a villain in the Marvel Universe! Avengers vs Xmen and then vs Punisher! If I were a villain I'd strike NOW! Lol

I haven't read Uncanny X Men until the AvX crossover. The issue with Mr. Sinister's underground city and his plans for dealing with the Phoenix Five floored me. I HAD to get the next issue.

Ohh, so YOU'Re the person who likes Justice League.

Seriously, I know it remains in the top 10, but I don't know one person who kept reading after the atrocious first storyline (although I do know several people who read the next ish on the stands and gave up -- myself included).

My local store said sales have dropped dramatically on that book.

And the take on Batson is ridiculous. Batson's an a--hole that has NO empathetic qualities and Dr. Sivana is nothing more than a cheap copy of Luthor in this incarnation.

DD is brilliant. I've not read AvX. And all of the Watchmen books have been a dramatic letdown.

@ JohnnyKrypton: Amen!

I met Johns at a Con last year. We were casually chatting about the industry, and, I swear to you, I felt like I was talking to a 10-y-o, not a revered industry pro. Then -- and I'm NOT making this up -- there was an announcement that a DC table had opened up for a signing and giveaways, and he said, "Oh, I have to go get some of those free buttons!" (Or whatever the giveaway was.) And he ran off like a little kid.

Um...dude, you are an executive at the freakin' company! Just tell someone to send a box of 'em up to your office on Monday.

Scott Snyder's Batman book is one of the best books out there. The court of owls and night of owls crossover event was pretty solid. He is also a nice guy. Got to meet him and Kyle Higgins and they were both super nice guys. Scott took the time to chat a little with each person in line for his signing. I walked up to Kyle when he wasn't at a booth and not only signed my comic but he also drew a picture of nightwing on the backboard that goes into the plastic comic sleeve.

Nightwing is a solid book and one of the better of the new 52 books IMO.

@ironknight27 Dude, that's awesome.
I never get comics with plastic sleeves...Maybe I should.

For me Secret Service should be higher on this list. It's a developing story line that I think will end up being a great series.

@RSDhillon- You might want to take it into consideration. They are not really expensive and it does add a bit of extra protection. I was seriously on a high after meeting Kyle Higgins because of how nice he was. Scott was just the icing on the cake.
