Last year, it was revealed that John Wick: Chapter 4 star Keanu Reeves has agreed to reprise the role of John Constantine in a sequel to the 2005 movie. Constantine helmer Francis Lawrence signed up to step back into the director's chair, while Akiva Goldsman was tapped to work on the screenplay with him.
The movie may have Americanized DC Comics' Hellblazer, but its following has only increased since it was first released. As for Reeves, he's more popular now than ever before and this is clearly a passion project for the actor.
While reports earlier this year suggesting DC Studios had shelved the project were quickly debunked, there's a lot of uncertainty surrounding Constantine 2. Many believe the sequel was only announced to give Warner Bros. something to DC-related to develop after the Joker sequel, though Goldsman has since said he's "been pretty deep in the story-breaking stage.”
Unfortunately, with the first part of the "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" DCU slate now revealed, Reeves seems a little less certain about the movie becoming a reality.
"We're trying," the actor tells Cinema Blend. "I don't know if it's gonna happen...I know I'm playing a different Constantine than the comic, you know, and I do get in a bit of trouble for that. I don't know if I'd look good as a blond."
"Hopefully I get to do it, but I don't know."
There's always a chance Constantine 2 will be an Elseworlds project set outside of the DCU, but with DC Studios planning a Swamp-Thing movie, we're guessing James Gunn and Peter Safran have their own plans for the demon-hunting hero.
It's possible Reeves will be part of the DCU but, as the actor himself points out, it's not like his John is particularly comic-accurate! With that in mind, something tells us this long-awaited sequel will once again fall by the wayside at Warner Bros.
Do you think Constantine 2 will happen?
