John Constantine Reboot From Evil Dead Wrath's Francis Galluppi In Development At DC Studios

A new John Constantine movie is in the works at DC Studios, with Evil Dead Wrath director Francis Galluppi on board to pen the script...

Shortly after James Gunn announced the first chapter of the first DCU slate, "Gods and Monsters," rumors circulated that a direct sequel to Constantine was in the works, and Warner Bros. later confirmed the project was in the planning stages.

Since then, we've had conflicting reports relating to the movie's status, but director Francis Lawrence claimed that the project was still moving ahead last year.

“The truth is, somewhere around the 15th anniversary or something, we did a Zoom and we all were discussing trying to get it up and going again. And again, we were just more active with it and finally got it past all these hurdles. And so we are now actively working on a script. So it’s really not that it’s just like, ‘Oh yeah, now we think the world is ready for it.’ I certainly think there is a bigger fan base and certainly it’s become a kind of cult classic, which has been really exciting to see and very strange, but it’s something we’ve always loved. We’re now in a spot where we are actively working on a script."

“And so we had been thinking about it.," he went on. "We had also been given an R rating [on the first Constantine] when we kind of made a PG-13 movie and followed all the PG-13 rules. So we’re like, ‘F–k it, let’s go and do a sequel and really make an R-rated movie. Give us an R, let us make a real R-rated movie.’”

Keanu Reeves also seemed confident that the sequel would ultimately move forward, but Deadline is now reporting that a new John Constantine movie is in the early stages of development at DC Studios, with Evil Dead Wrath director Francis Galluppi attached to pen the script.

The trade doesn't share any other details, and we're not sure if this project will be set in the main DCU or an Elseworlds tale, but it's probably safe to assume that Reeves won't be returning as the chain-smoking demon hunter.

For what it's worth, Jeff Sneider thinks this might be the role Glen Powell was speaking to the studio about.

Logan and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold is still attached to helm a Swamp Thing movie, which could potentially feature Constantine.

Peter Safran shared a positive update on the project last month.

"We're working on it, absolutely. The script is being written as we speak. But it's something we're excited about. All these things take time – when you've already got a filmmaker involved, you've got to wait for their window [of availability] as well."

@newhire13 - yes…

He’s a far better choice for Booster then John Constantine.

Also not English.

@TheVisionary25 - Independently, as part of Swamp Thing or as part of Justice League Dark or any combination there of would be great. If they do the latter I could do with them not using that name or at least not using that name in story as it kind of seems silly although we are talking about comic book related movies here so I can live with it.

Honestly if he is having meeting at DC Studios and has publicly admitted he "maybe would like to play Batman" then yeah...I think he's meeting about Batman.

Also the timing for when Gunn already stated in his god awful podcast that it wont be too long before we see Batman.

I’m done! More broken promises and now Keanu not coming back. [frick] DC [frick] JG. Batman 2 needs to hurry up. I don’t care anymore. I already know I’ma be waiting another decade for part 3. And another 20 for a Batman reboot with Gunn not involved. Over it all.

Excited! Please make sure he’s comic accurate and British and is a chain smoker. Through in Zatanna, Deadman, and Etrigan. Set the stage for Justice League Dark. Hell, people liked Clayface. Throw him in there just to connect it with Batman for a crossover. Or Manbat. Maybe connect it to Lanterns s2 and have Hal as Spectre.
Or maybe Dr Fate should be in it and that could connect to JSA etc. lots of potential. Or one more idea, have Raven be introduced and it could connect to Teen Titans!

This randomness is no different than what we got with the DCEU. No vision, no direction, just random crap thrown at a wall in hopes of something sticking.
ImNotaBot
ImNotaBot - 11/4/2026, 10:56 PM
@TheJok3r - Yeah, man, I’d love to see a Constantine or Justice League Dark movie. But Gunn needs to get his priorities straight. If he keeps taking big swings before the DCU finds its footing, he could lose his job and leave an already battered brand in even worse shape.
ImNotaBot
ImNotaBot - 11/4/2026, 10:53 PM
I’m really excited about this, but if Gunn wants to keep his job, he needs to prioritize characters who can connect with general audiences and bring in money at the box office.

I want DC to succeed, and one of the things I like about Gunn is that he gives B-, C-, and D-list characters a shot. I liked Clayface and his take on Lobo. But I don’t see another superhero horror movie being an easy sell. A Constantine movie would need a much bigger budget than Clayface to do the character justice. If they try to make it on the cheap, I worry it’ll run into the same problem that hurt Lanterns.

I’d fast-track Batman, Teen Titans, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, and a good Flash movie. Once the DCU has a few more box-office wins under its belt, Gunn will have more room to take swings on horror and lesser-known characters.

If the character is white, any other race or gender is allowed to play him, but if a white actor isn't also English it's unfathomable a white American male actor could ever play a role of a white British character. Oh no.

Finally something interesting. I hope this is for the main DCU continuity, enough with trying to make the Keanu sequel be the priority just because they wanna latch onto his power star.

And I hope it isn't Glen Powell, Constatine has to be british.

One of those rare cases in which bringing back a previous actor to fill the role is absolutely acceptable.

We would never say this about Marvel. This is why James Gunn fails.
