Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal is clearly the missing piece to the puzzle, and along with his determination and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had: humanity. With the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris , if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax...he will become the greatest Green Lantern of all.

The movie is set to be released on June 17th, 2011!

Thanks guys! :) The video should work for you now if it didnt before! I'm not a huge Flash fan (I think the only comic books I've read featuring the character are the JLA/Avengers crossover and his recent appearence in Superman #700!) although I do plan on catching up with him now I'm getting in to DC!

Can anyone recommend any good origin stories?

@JoshW Unfortunately DC hasn't really gotten around to updating Barry Allen's orgin. Geoff Johns, of course, did GL: Secret Origins but there isn't really a Flash equivelant. The closest you may come to a modern retelling of his origins is in Flash Rebirth. I mean really the character hasn't been around since Crisis on Infinite Earths almost 25 years ago. I would imagine though, with a film coming, they will get around to retconning an origin and bringing it up to date more thoroughly.
I too love the Flash and look forward to the movie but I'll admit that most Flash fans' love of the character, myself included, comes from years of just following the character rather than particular storylines. Sure there are great Flash stories out there but we're also invested in the character just by virtue of following him for so many years. For me personally, I'm more of a fan of Wally as he is the one I was first really introduced to. The guy spent almost as much time as the only Flash as Barry did before him. Both characters are great though.
Point is I can't really suggest a good jumping in place for Flash. Wish I could be more help.
Maybe teabag will be more help.

JoshWilding - 7/26/2010, 2:30 PM
Thanks again guys, and cheers for the recommendations!

LEE: Yeah, I'm loving DC bud! :) I started reading Superman from the 700th issue and I'm now right up to date with Batman! (I started from "Batman And Son" and now I'm reading the current titles like "Batman And Robin" as well as "The Return Of Bruce Wayne" - Grant Morrison is awesome!)
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 7/26/2010, 2:34 PM
GLFanboy: Yeah, I'm finding it a lot more difficult to get into the DC universe than it was when I got into Marvel 10 or so years ago! Superman and Batman have been easy enough to jump on with but DC just isnt as easy as Marvel when it comes to starting to read their titles - the whole universe just seems a lot more complicated and intricate! I'm sure I'll be able to get up to date in the next year or so though..! :) Thanks for the info anyway - I'll be sure to check out "Flash: Rebirth" as soon as I'm done with catching up on Geoff Johns' Green Lantern!

tea: Cheers bud - I'll look that up as well now! I've already spend nearly £100 just to get right up to date with Batman (as well as some of the classic stories you and ROR advised me to pick up - loved "The Killing Joke"!) so God knows how much it'll cost to do the rest as well! :P

GLFanboy

@JoshW I actually think it's just the same. It's just a matter of perception. We all think it's easy for the other to jump into our repsective Universe's. But over the last year or so, I've tried to get into Marvel and find it probably just as difficult as you find DC. Of course you guys had the Ultimates line but now that is just as tough and after having read a few of those, when I talk to Marvel fans, I feel like I'm not getting the full history.
I think this is probably the core of what creates the Marvel/DC rivalry. We want to give the other company a chance but really getting immersed into the other, after being so well versed and knowledgable about our own for so many years, makes the task seem daunting and we start to question whether it's even worth it and eventually put it down and say "f$#@ it! I'll just stick with Marvel/DC. F#@$ DC/Marvel for making shit so complicated!" Add on top of that the fact that the rising price of comics makes taking a chance on new material much more of a risk.
I'm really glad you're enjoying GL. I think that it speaks to Geoff Johns' talent in that he made a book that actually IS accessible to new readers rather than just saying it is.
I'll trade you DC suggestions for Marvel!

The Killing Joke was freakin' awesome!

GLFanboy: Ha, I guess I never thought of it that way before! :) I suppose that because I already had a good knowledge of Marvel before I started reading, it was just that much easier...I've found it easy to get into Batman and Superman as I'd already read a lot of their classic stories but I'm lost when it comes to Flash, Wonder Woman (is #600 a good jumping on point?) and a fair few others! Even though I'm sure at this moment in time I'll never be able to understand the intricate events ("Blackest Night" for example) I'm going to stick with it and keep reading title by title until I get to know the characters - exactly as I did with Marvel!

You want some Marvel recommendations? Ok! Here are the title I'd advise if you'd like to start getting to know them. Most of them arent origin stories, but they are great jumping on points that dont require a huge amount of knowledge about them! Just search for them in graphic novel form and start from Vol. 1! :)

* Amazing Spider-Man (JMS)
* Amazing Spider-Man: Brand New Day (Dan Slott)
* Marvel Knights Spider-Man (Mark Millar)
* Thor (JMS)
* Fantastic Four (Mark Waid)
* Captain America (Ed Brubaker)
* Invincible Iron Man (Matt Fraction)
* Civil War (Mark Millar)
* Wolverine: Enemy of the State (Mark Millar)
* Daredevil: Man Without Fear (Frank Miller)

They're just a few of my favourites off the top of my head. Most of which are pretty recent which will make it easy for you to catch up with the present stories. As for events, here's the order I'd read them in:

* Avengers Disassembled (Brian Bendis)
* House of M (Brian Bendis)
* Civil War (Mark Millar)
* Secret Invasion (Brian Bendis)
* Dark Reign (Brian Bendis)
* Siege (Brian Bendis)

JoshW I wish I had this list with me before I went to Comic-Con this year!! I was scouring the vendors looking for Marvel trades at 50% off! I picked up some in your list and will make it a point to fill in the others.
I know fans will disagree with me but my perception (and I'm not a regular reader of WW) after reading Wonder Woman 600 is that this may very well be an EXCELLENT place to start! JMS is doing something very different here and I think it's going to be fun for old and new fans (if they could get past whining about her TEMPORARY costume change). Diana has no memory of her past for the foreseeable future so past continuity won't even be playing into the story until the end.

@bropous Not a new origin but at least a modern retelling of it. It's hard to get someone into a character when you tell him go read the origin story from Showcase #4 from 1956. It needs it.

Question for everyone: Is GL footage still supposed to be on the Clash of the Titans Blu-Ray? So I'm hoping someone can figure out a way to get that on the interwebs for me. If I had a blu-ray player I'd be tempted to go buy the mediocre movie just for the GL footage :-P

GreenLanternFan
GreenLanternFan - 7/26/2010, 8:07 PM
@crimsoncrusader It was big news on a bunch of sites back in April. Search "Green Lantern Clash of the Titans" on google and a bunch of sites say that it will include it, but there are a few that say it's all bogus. I'm thinking it is bogus because the official case images don't say anything about it.
