DC Studios co-CEO has confirmed that creative plans for the DCU's Batman have changed since we first learned that a new take on the iconic hero would make his debut in The Brave and the Bold.

Fans suspected as much, anyway, since Gunn has previously admitted that he was finding it difficult to come up with a satisfactory way of introducing a brand-new big-screen Dark Knight to the burgeoning shared universe.

A user asked the Superman director the following on Threads: “James, have the plans for DCU Batman changed creatively in some way since the 2023 announcement of The Brave and the Bold?” Gunn replied with a brief, “Yep.”

This obviously doesn't give us much to go on, and could mean any number of things. Will Batman still debut in The Brave and the Bold, or could it be sooner? Have Gunn and Peter Safran decided to make Robert Pattinson's The Batman the DCU's Caped Crusader after all?

The latter seems unlikely, but with the recent delays, there's a chance Gunn and co. have rethought their approach to Matt Reeves' "Elseworlds" films.

Safran was asked about DC's "duelling Batmans" during an interview with IGN, and assured fans that Reeves recently pausing production to deal with a personal issue will not result in the sequel being shelved.

"We've got Batman: Part Two and [the animated film] Dynamic Duo in 2028. Listen, I couldn't be more excited about the plans that we have over the next five years and, obviously, a lot of them, we're just not able to talk about yet, but I think you're never going to please everybody, but I have a feeling that people are going to be excited about what we have coming up. And, again, Batman: Part Two, everybody's aware of the issues we're having right now, but, what we've seen so far of the shoot, it looked absolutely fantastic and Matt Reeves is a supremely talented filmmaker. Dynamic Duo is, for my money, as original today as Pixar was when they did Toy Story so we're really excited about that. Obviously, Man of Tomorrow's in post [production] right now."

Gunn recently debunked a rumor that Batman: The Brave and the Bold had been put on hold until the WBD/Paramount merger is settled, but even when (if?) the movie does enter production, will Andy Muschietti be at the helm?

When the news broke that Muschietti had been chosen to helm the project, Gunn and fellow DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran said they enlisted the filmmaker on the strength of his work on The Flash.

This was before The Flash hit theaters, and the movie's underperformance at the box office (it actually received a mostly positive critical reception) led to speculation that Muschietti may have been taken off the project.

There's also been some resurfaced chatter that Gunn might be planning to introduce an older take on Bruce Wayne (possibly even in his 50s).

Gunn addressed the older Batman rumor during a 2025 interview, when he was asked if DCU's Dark Knight would be in his mid-to-late 30s, given the fact that Damian is typically portrayed as a 10-year-old.

"No, I think you have to wait to see the movie. Some things have changed. Plenty of things are in flux on what his situation is with his parentage and all that stuff, so I wouldn't take any of it–Yeah, I mean, the actor who wants to... Listen, first of all, I can't tell you the amount of big actors that have told me they want to be Batman. I think you'd have a harder time finding actors who don't want to be Batman. He's the one character everyone wants to play. That's the truth."

When asked whether Damian was even still part of the movie, Gunn replied: "I think you have to wait to see exactly what's happening."

I could see it being about a different Robin rather than Damian. Tim would be my choice.

@MCUKnight11 - that could be it perhaps

Damian might be them skipping too much of this Batman’s history but Tim is like right in the middle.

Plus , i always feel he gets some of the short shrift in adaptations so it would be nice to see him utilized.

@MCUKnight11 - How about NO ROBIN. That would be my vote

@MCUKnight11 - I'd be more interested in Tim over Damian. Just keep the history there, with Dick being Nightwing, and Jason being, well, dead.

Introduce Red Hood and Damian later.

@FreddyH - Yeah, and no silly costumes or villains either. It simply isn't realistic. It should be like Succession or Suits if they expect us to take it seriously.

When will people understand, we aren't getting a Batman in this universe because it'll be cancelled soon.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

@FireGunn - Ellison has probably already extended the contracts to 2031.

So sorry, but you're going to be screaming into the wind for some time yet.

See you in 2036.

Interesting , I wonder what these new creative plans/changes are to an extent?.

I’m still hoping The Brave & The Bold is a father & son story like Gunn said with Damian & Bruce since that will help not only distinguish it from Reeves version of the character but also prior adaptations of Batman.

Also , I wish they properly establish the film being in a fantastical world as well where villains like Mr Freeze , Man Bat amongst others can exist too since that would be exciting imo!!.

I was honestly really rooting for this reboot of DC. I enjoyed Superman a lot, but that's been it so far. The constant news, changes, lack of 2/3rds of the Trinity is really making me lose total interest. I feel bad for Reeves, if he's having family issues, but this is nuts. This movie needs to be finished, shelved, or just spin Pattinson into the DCU so we're not waiting even longer to get a Batman in there.

I just hope they move on from Andy Muschietti. I’d much rather he keep moving on Welcome to Derry and stay away from DC after The Flash

@Ha1frican - fair enough but let’s not forget that The Flash was caught in the middle of multiple issues such as the whole Ezra Miller situation and the incoming reboot aswell hence it going through multiple reshoots apparently etc.

I feel he deserves another shot atleast that isn’t burdened by all that BS but if he does move on then I wouldn’t mind someone else aswell (Drew Goddard perhaps?).

@TheVisionary25 - The main thing for me is I really like WTD so I want him to finish out the planned 3 seasons and that would most likely take long enough that waiting for him to be done, on top of the results on The Flash make it feel much less of a value proposition. Not only would we have to wait even longer but for someone who has struck out with that IP already. I’d rather have my cake and eat it too by having someone else step in and getting the movie sooner

@Ha1frican - that’s fair and understandable imo.

Could it be that they realized that having two Batman franchises competing against each other is a financially stupid idea ? The Batman II's release date is similar to Black Panther's in 2018, which went on to make over $1.3 billion at the box office, so if Batman II manages to do the same, why would you sabotage that franchise by starting a second franchise on the side ? Before anyone says "but The Batman is not part of the DCU", it doesn't matter, it's still a DC property. If Man of Tomorrow manages to exceed Superman's box office numbers, and if Batman II manages to cross a billion, then that's a winning formula you leave alone and don't mess with.

Hope it means he'll debut sooner. Might as well, since he was already shown in Creature Commandos.
