THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD Update Shared By James Gunn As Rumor Suggest DCU's Batman Will Be Cast Next

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has revealed whether The Brave and the Bold will be put on hold until after The Batman trilogy concludes, while a new rumour suggests the Caped Crusader is up next to be cast.

When DC Studios announced its DCU slate, among the most exciting projects was The Brave and the Bold. A new take on Batman, it will see the hero discover he's a father when he meets Damian Wayne and takes the boy under his wing as the new Robin.

Unfortunately, it also means Matt Reeves' The Batman trilogy will remain an Elseworlds franchise. Many fans have since argued it was a missed trick on DC Studios' part to not bring Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne into the DCU, though it was always unlikely he'd be willing to become a franchise player and join the Justice League.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn recently responded to a fan on Threads who asked whether The Brave and the Bold will only be released after Reeves' trilogy is done. Making it clear he's unconcerned about any overlap, the filmmaker responded with a simple, "No."

In other news, after casting Superman and Supergirl, it sounds like Batman could be the next DCU lead we see find an actor. "Hearing that agencies are anticipating a casting call will be going out very soon and that DC Studios will be firing up the Bat-Signal," scooper Charles Murphy recently claimed on X.

Let the speculation commence!

Talking last year about DC Studios' plans for The Brave and the Bold, Gunn said: "This is the introduction of the DCU's Batman. This is the story of Damian Wayne, who is Batman's actual son who we didn't know existed for the first eight to 10 years of his life. He was raised as a little murderer and assassin. He's a little son of a bitch. He's my favorite Robin."

"It's based on the Grant Morrison comic book's run, which is one of my favorite Batman runs, and we are putting that all together right now."

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran added, "And this is obviously a feature film, and it's going to feature other members of the extended 'Bat-family', just because we feel like they've been left out of the Batman stories in the theater for far too long."

Matt Reeves' The Batman II remains on track to be released in 2025, and we expect the DCU's Caped Crusader to make his debut - alongside Robin - a little further down the line based on a previous update from DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn.

Asked last November about a possible Bruce Wayne casting announcement, the filmmaker said, "No. We don't even have a script yet."

It's still very early days for this project and it probably won't swoop into theaters until 2027. Director Andy Muschietti, whom Gunn hired after being impressed by his work on The Flash, is thought to be focusing on It TV series Welcome to Derry, so patience will be key when it comes to seeing the DCU's Dark Knight on our screens...unless he shows up before his solo outing, of course!

Unlike Supergirl, that won't happen in Superman: Legacy as Gunn recently confirmed Batman isn't going to be among the heroes who appear in the Man of Tomorrow's upcoming reboot.

Keep checking back here for the latest on The Brave and the Bold as we have it.

I would laugh my a$$ off if they cast Robert Pattinson
GeneralChaos
GeneralChaos - 2/2/2024, 10:18 AM
@Origame - won't happen. Gunn only wants to work with the same characters and actors he's worked with. That's why he's rebooting everything from the DCEU EXCEPT for his show and movie.

@Origame - That would actually be very clever in a myriad of ways.

It would prove that he doesn't just bring back actors from his own stuff (which he actually came close to doing with Meg Donnelly).

It would also bring the DCU into more of a focused brand. We would have one Batman (in two universes, but one Batman).
He's already got Matt Reeves involved in DCU-set Arkham show.

And Pattinson is pushing 40. So even though The Batman is supposed to be an early years Batman, he's actually not that young and could easily play Batman at two separate ages. Also can you imagine how weird it's gonna be when young Batman is way older than Dad Batman? Like they could easily cast a guy in his 20s to play Dad Batman and Pattinson would be a decade or more older, lol.

@GeneralChaos - Remind me, when did he work with David Corenswet, the star of the movie Gunn himself is directing…?
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 2/2/2024, 10:42 AM
@CerealKiller1 - Gunn never had a Superman. But he never had a Batman too, technically, so you could still get Robert Pattinson.
CerealKiller1

@ObserverIO - ….huh? Don’t really understand the comment, sorry. My comment was referring to this guy saying he only works with people he’s worked with before. And so I asked when he worked with Corenswet, which I don’t believe he has
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 2/2/2024, 11:09 AM
@CerealKiller1 - Oh, he said "Characters and actors", I just assumed he meant working with the same actors for the same characters. Since as you point out, James Gunn obviously does work with different people on every shoot, so that would be a stupid thing to say about any director.

But with the DCU, he has noticeably only brough back characters played by actors that have played them before in his stuff, but not anyone else from the DCEU or any other universe, so I assume that's what he was talking about since that's a thing.

But yeah, he's obviously been working with new people on every single project he's ever doen. Like most directors. I can't think of a single director that only ever worked with the same cast throughout their whole career.

@GeneralChaos - Besides Nathan Fillian, has Gunn worked with any of the Superman Legacy cast before?
CerealKiller1
CerealKiller1 - 2/2/2024, 11:18 AM
@ObserverIO - You’re correct, it would be a stupid thing to say. But as you pointed out, there hasn’t been a Batman in a Gunn movie before, so either way this guys logic makes no sense
GeneralChaos
GeneralChaos - 2/2/2024, 12:28 PM
@CerealKiller1 - Did you not get I was talking about the DC universe that existed before he took over?
GeneralChaos
GeneralChaos - 2/2/2024, 12:31 PM
@Origame - Get what? That every character that was part of the previous DC universe has almost no chance to be a part of his DC unless it's a character from his Peacemaker or his The Suicide Squad? Yes, I get that.
GeneralChaos
GeneralChaos - 2/2/2024, 12:35 PM
@kazuma - Let me clarify: Any actor who is expecting to carry over their character to be a part of Gunn's new DCU better look elsewhere, unless said character was on Peacemaker, a Gunn show, or The Suicide Squad, a Gunn movie.
Origame
Origame - 2/2/2024, 3:01 PM
@GeneralChaos - dude, it was a reference to how Matt reeves wanted the batman to be in its own universe.

@GeneralChaos - Blue Beetle negates that argument though. And Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad are the only dceu movies to not be widely hated.
CerealKiller1
CerealKiller1 - 2/2/2024, 5:42 PM
@GeneralChaos - I don’t think YOU get what you were talking about. Pattinson isn’t part of the DCU, so again, one way or the other, your logic doesn’t hold up
GeneralChaos
GeneralChaos - 2/6/2024, 12:13 PM
@CerealKiller1 - I don't think YOU get that I'm not the one who brought up Pattinson being cast for the DCU Batman... and Gunn isn't interested in previous actors unless he worked with said previous actors.
GeneralChaos
GeneralChaos - 2/6/2024, 12:13 PM
@kazuma - Blue Beetle is the exception that proves the rule.
kazuma
kazuma - 2/6/2024, 7:04 PM
@GeneralChaos - The JUSTICE LEAGUE was [frick]ed in the snyder verse. Characters were poorly handled, cast and some actors don't want to return. The Justice League members are core DC characters.

Cavil is too old to be superman in a DC universe. Ben Affleck is too old to be Batman in a DC universe. Gal Gadot was HORRIBLY cast. Who TF want's to see Ezra Miller return? Jason Mamoa is returning as Lobo. And Ray Fisher doesn't want to touch WB.
The most polarizing actors, for the most polarizing takes, of iconic, and core DC characters, not returning for a reboot, makes sense.

GeneralChaos
GeneralChaos - 2/7/2024, 12:56 PM
@kazuma - I'd say reboot the entire thing or at least keep Peacemaker as an alternative universe thing. The fans want Cavill back. The only reason to not bring him back or Gadot or Mamoa is because they want to reboot and start over but its obvious that rebooting doesn't apply to the characters he worked with. He won't release Ayers cut of Suicide Squad but he would gladly bring Margot Robbie back as the same character. It's obvious he only wants to bring back his stuff. If he worked with Cavill and Affleck and they wanted to return they would.

And Blue Beetle and that director are probably returning because the movie paid tribute to Gunn by having a poster of his Scooby Doo movie in the character's bedroom. Classic sucking up to the boss lol

Just let Jensen Ackles audition. He'll knock It out of the park. I'm telling you. I've watched that dude in Supernatural (I mean alllll 15 seasons) and even when the writing is bad, the dude still delivers. His variety of acting work in that show is phenomenal. He'd be a great Bruce Wayne/Batman. He'd be great. At least Gunn should allow him to audition.

bkmeijer1 - 2/2/2024, 10:34 AM
@SuperBatCap1 - after watching Reacher, I think Alan Ritchson might be the better fit. I wouldn't mind seeing Ackles as Batman either though, maybe even in Vaughn's hypothetical Red Son

@VamP5659 - for robin? 😅 im playing but to he batman he gotta get his weight up and deepen that voice. he can pull off unhinged though....I'm just not sure if he's tall enough (I think he's 5'8")
VamP5659
VamP5659 - 2/2/2024, 10:30 AM
@AquaClunge - He's 5'9, Corenswent is 6'4 so if this casting plays out. We're gonna have a Superman who's gonna TOWER over Batman which would actually be a super fun dynamic in a sort of Freddy vs Jason type way.

And on the bulking up thing, he can for sure do it. If f**king Kumail Nanjiani can do it, so can Penn lol.

@harryba11zack - If Hugh Jackman's casting as Wolverine has shown anyone, height doesn't really play a big factor in a good performance. Hugh may not have been 5'3 but he captured the essence and badassery of Logan so damn well, nobody really cared.

Also just as a reminder, Keaton is 5'9, wouldn't be the first time we got a short Bruce Wayne.

@VamP5659 - I first thought of him way back when he was getting a lot of praise for his performance in You, it's due to his voice-over and he did well in those.

But that was before they picked Robert Pattinson. But who knows.
