A PG-13 DEADPOOL Film In The MCU Is Fine As Long As Ryan Reynolds Is Involved Says Tim Miller

Original Deadpool director Tim Miller says Wade Wilson doesn't need an R-rated movie as long as Ryan Reynolds is under the mask. Do you think a PG-13 film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe could work?

According to the director of the first Deadpool film, as long as Ryan Reynolds is portraying Wade Wilson, the project doesn't need an R-rating.

Speaking to Inverse about Love, Death & Robots Vol. 2, Tim Miller stated, "I think Ryan Reynolds' take on the character and the way he embraces the particular kind of insanity — even if you said he's not gonna use four-letter words — would still be there. He still is that character. You can take the R-rated parts out of it if you wanted and it would still be Deadpool if Ryan was doing it.

That's high praise from Miller and somewhat surprising, considering the fact that Miller walked away from helming Deadpool 2 due to creative differences with Reynolds over where to take the character in the sequel. Based on the comment above, it seems the split was amicable or that Miller and Reynolds have mended fences over the years.

One thing's for sure, there's plenty of material for Deadpool to poke fun at now that 20th Century Fox has joined Marvel Studios under the Disney umbrella. The 'Merc with a Mouth' definitely needs to riff on the fact that Josh Brolin played Cable in Deadpool 2 and Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.

The last we heard on the project, Kevin Feige had stated that Deadpool 3 would be R-rated and set in the MCU, with Bob's Burgers scribes Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin penning the script (with input from Reynolds). However, with much of the MCU landscape shifting in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and Marvel needing to essentially make up a year of lost revenue, who knows if Feige and co. are still willing to take such a bold risk.

Good comedy could come out of a PG-13 Deadpool movie. Then again, that route didn't exactly work for Once Upon a Deadpool.

I'm fine with it being PG-13. Can even squeeze a few extra jokes out of it too.

I mean it would be weird switching to a PG-13 format with a character like Deadpool after two movies, but as long as the writing is good I''d still be down to watch.

The Mouse House needs to Leave it R rated. That is what it is.

Starting from scratch? I think it could work with some adjustments. But 2 movies into a franchise? It would be too awkward a change.

I don't disagree with him, but I think they are definitely doing rated R.

But when he teams up with other groups/heroes, i'd love to see him get bleeped out when he cusses and freaks out, breaking the fourth wall to the audience.

Deadpool doesn't NEED to be R-Rated.....in general.

But considering the first 2 movies were, DP3 needs to be R-Rated. It will lose a LOT of fans rifht off the bat if they see a PG-13 ratint. And lets be honest, pretty much everyone agrees that DP1 is the better of the two, amd that movie wasn't R-Rated simply because it had a lot of curse words. You could not do a lot of the stuff in that movie if its PG-13, even without curse words. The whole blatant, in your face, raunchy humor and gratuitous nudity gives it a whole different tone.

Making DP3 PG-13 would be a horrible mistake.

That's the thing though, Deadpool 1 and 2 prove that it isn't a risk to make it rated.

I think that Deadpool could survive a shift to PG-13 since the main drive of the franchise is comedy... it might even help to force the formula to evolve by denying it some of its old tricks, provided they could find new material to do, as the shock value lessens the more you do it.

But really, whatever serves the material best.

Doesn't matter because it was confirmed it would stay R-rated anyway right??

@Nightwing1015 - yes. Feige was pretty definitive about not messing with it, and i don’t think theres anyone in the world more careful/calculated about they say publicly than him. I don’t know why everyone is suddenly throwing PG13 out and questioning if it will be rated that or not.

While it should be Rated R, and I'm glad Deadpool 3 is going to be, but I agree they can get away with the character in PG-13 no problem. You can get away with an awful lot in PG-13. Throw in a few creative censored words in creative ways and you can have a blast, not unlike a page right out of the comics.

Feige said in like January when they hired the Bob’s Burger’s writers that it would be R. What are you talking about with the lost revenue? LOL its not like now that its 4 months later they’re all of a sudden realizing they need to drastically alter their content to appeal to a wider audience because Black Widow and Shang Chi got delayed 2 months.. I think Disney/Marvel will be just fine, doubt they’re gonna be counting pennies any time soon.

Sure, but Deadpool's niche is that he's the R-Rated comedic superhero. They could make a funny PG-13 Deadpool, and get a lot of mileage out of jokes about him no longer having an R-rating, but he's going to lose a little bit of the uniqueness of the character, as well as some of the audience who came to see something different from the rest of the MCU.

Most Marvel movies are PG-13 and have a lot of comedy. They may not have 4th wall breaks, but if you're looking for a comedic PG-13 superhero movie, there's a lot of options. R-rated Deadpool can attract a chunk of this audience, but he also draws the people who might not go see Guardians or Thor, and people who think that the standard CBMs are a bit too "tame" or "kiddie". Making him PG-13 risks losing that audience.

Best joke in either movie was deadpool killing a guy with a zamboni. it doesn't have to be R to be good, but if they make it PG-13 and call it deadpool 3 people are gonna be pissed
