The Hollywood Reporter has shared early tracking for Disney's new
Mulan movie, and we can expect it to ride in later this month with a heroic $85+ million haul.
If those projections hold up, it will land the biggest opening of 2020 thus far, slicing down Sony's
Bad Boys for Life in the process. Some bullish box office experts are confident that Mulan could even match, or surpass,
Aladdin's $91.5 million debut. That's a result worthy of any warrior, particularly with an all-Asian cast not immediately recognisable to most filmgoers.
Mulan cost upwards of $200 million to produce, but there's a strong awareness surrounding the film, and this being the first Disney live-action remake to carry a PG-13 rating likely increases interest from older viewers. The coronavirus clearly isn't stopping people heading to theaters domestically, but the box office in China has been cut off at the knees.
That's bound to hurt
Mulan's worldwide total, but it is still being released as planned in other territories, and it's become the norm for films to arrive slightly later in that country.
In related box office news,
A Quiet Place Part II is looking to scare up a $60+ million opening.
