Ralph Breaks the Internet won't be breaking Disney's own box office record for Thanksgiving weekend, but the sequel to Walt Disney Animation Studios' Wreck-It Ralph is still tracking for a very impressive $85.6 million opening weekend haul. That would actually be the second-best Thanksgiving opening ever, behind only Disney's own Frozen ($93.5M), but ahead of the studio's Moana ($82M), Toy Story 2 ($80.1M), and Coco ($72.9M).
Ralph Breaks the Internet earned $21.7 million on Friday while on its way to a projected $50.5 million three-day total. That's actually just slightly ahead of its 2012 predecessor Wreck-It Ralph, which opened to $49 million over three days and finished with a worldwide total of $471.2 million ($189.4M domestically).
Wreck-It Ralph's $49 million was actually the previous highest opening for a Disney film before Frozen came alone the following year and smashed all the records with a $67.4 million total over the three-day weekend, and $93.9 million over the five-day holiday period.
While Ralph Breaks the Internet may not be setting any individual box office milestones, the animated film's success coupled with Creed II's $56 million Wednesday-Sunday opening — the best Thanksgiving opening for a live-action film — is helping make 2018 the best Thanksgiving weekend all time for the box office. Of course, this also includes Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald ($42.1M) and Dr. Seuss' The Grinch ($40.4M), both battling for third. The total 2018 Thanksgiving box office is estimated to bring in around $306 million, topping 2013's $295 million.
“Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2” leaves Litwak’s video arcade behind, venturing into the uncharted, expansive and thrilling world of the internet—which may or may not survive Ralph’s wrecking. Video game bad guy Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman) must risk it all by traveling to the world wide web in search of a replacement part to save Vanellope’s video game, Sugar Rush. In way over their heads, Ralph and Vanellope rely on the citizens of the internet—the netizens—to help navigate their way, including a webite entrepreneur named Yesss (voice of Taraji P. Henson), who is the head algorithm and the heart and soul of trend-making site “BuzzzTube.”
Ralph Breaks the Internet is now playing in theaters.
