THE LION KING VFX Supervisor Elliot Newman On Adapting Key Moments From The Animated Classic - EXCLUSIVE

The Lion King has been embraced by moviegoers and is doing exceptionally well at the box office, but when reviews started popping up online, some critics found fault with the decision to adhere so closely to the animated classic. While the "live-action" version is quite a bit longer and puts a new spin on certain characters and scenes, it seems as if some simply didn't want to see a remake.

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense considering the fact that the best part about a movie like The Lion King is seeing those cartoons brought to life, and most fans agree that director Jon Favreau found the right balance between respecting what came before and delivering something that still felt fresh.

Recently, I had the opportunity to talk to The Lion King's VFX Supervisor, MPC's Elliot Newman (The Jungle Book). I asked him about what it was like finding that balance and how much the visual effects team referred back to the cartoon in order to create what we ended up seeing on the big screen.

"Much of it was Jon's direction but a lot of it was us referring back to the original movie. [It] was such a masterpiece and a really amazing piece of movie history. We knew that there was a huge following for that and so much about it was done so well, we would often say, 'How do we improve this when so much of it is so great?' The original movie was so well done. Jon never wanted to say we were doing a shot for shot remake. He wanted to bring something new and he wanted to make sure it was modern and tell some of the story slightly differently.

"We wanted to honour the original to a degree as well because the audience want that. If you modified it and made it too different, people would be upset because they want that memory and they want to feel that nostalgic moment and be reminded of how that felt. Jon was quite clever in making sure there was a decent balance of the nostalgia from the original and obviously then upgrading the story and visuals to be more modern. He struck a good balance there."

Honestly, that sounds like the perfect approach, and it's fair to say that both Favreau and the movie's VFX team did ultimately strike the right balance between recreating those classic moments to make fans happy while ensuring that we weren't just sitting through the exact same two hour movie.

Yeah, when I saw the original Lion King all I could think of was "this is good, but wouldn't it be so much better with less color, more static direction and character designs that don't emote as well!"

Didn't see it, but I get the feeling this was a 4K version of the original, word for word but without the charm. And seeing how much money it's making, Disney will keep cranking out these remakes of classics until people stop watching em.

That being said... I wouldn't mind a live action Emperor's New Groove.

And why was Ezra Miller born to play this role?

@KWilly - Ezra Miller doesn't have enough charisma for it.

@tmp3 - Ezra Miller's "charisma" is just overrated period. Its the excuse people use to compliment his acting all the time, which isn't that great at all.

@Kurne - Miller has the antithesis of charisma. He's only ever good playing deranged weirdos like his role in We Need to Talk about Kevin; don't know how he got such high profile gigs recently. I guess shitty casting directors?

@Kurne - Yeah, you got a good point.

@tmp3 - Zack Snyder being one of them for calling him directly (whether Miller was a good actor or not, he was completely wrong for Barry Allen).

His weirdo schtick is cringy. But he has a solid enough /built-up resume at this point that casting directors are likely impressed by [his] experience alone more than anything else. Unfortunately it might keep on building up for the worst.

@Kurne - Yeah, I thought he showed promise in Kevin but he's been nothing but terrible in everything since then. He was on the short-list for that Willa Wonka film by Paul King (which is probably dead now?) alongside Gosling and Gambino, and it's so weird to see casting agents put him on the same level of talent as those guys.

OT

Just saw Once upon a time in Hollywood, it was very enjoyable but defiantly more of a love letter to the 60s then a Manson film. It is probably Quentin Tarantinos most reserved film next to Jackie Brown.

Minor spoiler
The only major gripe I have is the use of Charles Manson. I think Tarantino was afraid of glorifying Manson so decided to go with the less is more approach.I think he could have had Manson play a more prominent role then he did while still showing what a horrible person Manson was.

This movie is making a gazillion dollars and I don't know a single person who's seen it, and I don't even know if I want to.

here's the thing tho it's the exact same movie there's literally no reason what so ever to see this movie you shouldn't remake something that's already perfect and timeless like the original Lion King
