Press Release

BURBANK, Calif. (June 12, 2020) — The Walt Disney Studios announced today that the heartwarming adventure The One and Only Ivan, an adaptation of the bestselling, award-winning book about one very special gorilla directed by Thea Sharrock, will premiere exclusively on Disney+ August 21, 2020.

The film, which was previously scheduled to be released theatrically by The Walt Disney Studios, is an unforgettable tale about the beauty of friendship, the power of visualization and the significance of the place one calls home. The One and Only Ivan, which comes to the screen in an impressive hybrid of live-action and CGI, is based on Katherine Applegate’s book, which won numerous awards upon its publication in 2013, including the Newbery Medal.

"The world has changed in a heartbeat. People all over the globe have shared important, life changing experiences in ways we have not seen for a century," said Thea Sharrock. "In response to this, I am so happy that we can share Katherine Applegate’s delightful and original story, ‘The One and Only Ivan’ with the world this August on Disney+, bringing some joy through this unique movie of true friendship, inspired by a true story."

The film features the voices of: Sam Rockwell as the gorilla Ivan; Angelina Jolie as Stella the elephant; Danny DeVito as Bob the dog; Helen Mirren as Snickers the poodle; Chaka Khan as Henrietta the chicken; Mike White as Frankie the seal; Brooklynn Prince as Ruby the baby elephant; Ron Funches as Murphy the rabbit; Phillipa Soo as Thelma the parrot; and stars Ramon Rodriguez, Ariana Greenblatt and Bryan Cranston. The One and Only Ivan is directed by Thea Sharrock from a screenplay by Mike White based on Applegate’s novel and is produced by the late Allison Shearmur, p.g.a., Angelina Jolie and Brigham Taylor, p.g.a. Sue Baden-Powell and Thea Sharrock serve as executive producers.

Ivan is a 400-pound silverback gorilla who shares a communal habitat in a suburban shopping mall with Stella the elephant and Bob the dog. He has few memories of the jungle where he was captured, but when a baby elephant named Ruby arrives, it touches something deep within him. Ruby is recently separated from her family in the wild, which causes him to question his life, where he comes from and where he ultimately wants to be.

"Straight to Disney+" is like a death sentence for their movies at this point, haha

@tmp3 - Onward was very good, though.

@adamcawa - Onward at least got a little bit of big screen time before they put it on there.

@adamcawa - It wasn't straight to D+ though, it was just a truncated streaming window

Probably a dud then

I’ve been meaning to read the novel, so I’m looking forward to this.

As for “Straight to Disney+” being for duds, I might remind people that we’re less than a month away from the release of “Hamilton”...

@Chewtoy - On the whole, Disney+ is much weaker in terms of original content than any of the other major streaming services. Netflix just released the new Spike Lee joint this weekend, and D+ has... Artemis Fowl.

@tmp3 - Eh, sure... it’s less than a year old whereas Netflix has been investing in original content for the past 7 years. But I’ve watched more on Disney+ than on Netflix stuff since it launched... Mandalorian, Togo, Frozen 2, Toy Story 4, and Onward all for the first time, and rewatched Endgame, a bunch of Marvel stuff, and various documentary and behind the scenes stuff.

Of “new to me” stuff on Netflix, there was Extraction... and I can’t think of much else that I’ve watched recently. I’ll still put on The Office or something when I’m bored, and I need to get back to “Kingdom”, but I haven’t been truly excited by anything on there since “The Ballad of Buster Scrugs”. I’m not sure if there’s anything on the horizon that I’m really anticipating either.

Meanwhile I’m salivating over Hamilton, Mandalorian season2, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision.

@Chewtoy - You didn't like The Irishman, Marriage Story, Da 5 Bloods or Dolemite Is My Name? Even looking ahead, Netflix still has new films from David Fincher(!) and Charlie Kaufman coming later this year, who are two of the best creatives working in Hollywood right now. That's not even including third-party films they have exclusive streaming rights to, like Uncut Gems.

Even TV wise, Netflix pumped out three of the best mini-series' of 2019 with When They See Us, Russian Doll and Unbelievable, and they have that big Sandman show coming up which could be incredible if handled right.

To each their own, but outside of Mando (which was ultimately just alright) and the early seasons of Simpsons, D+ is completely empty for me.

@tmp3 - I admit, a lot of these didn’t excite me, but more to the point:

Russian Doll premiered Feb 2019
When they see us - May 2019
Unbelievable - September 2019
Dolemite Is my Name - Oct 2019
The Irishman - Nov. 2019
Marriage Story - Dec. 2019

Literally the only thing you mentioned that premiered this year was “Da 5 Bloods”... which just released today. We’re 6 months into the year. So yeah... I stand by the fact that I’ve watched very little original Netflix content recently.

Scenes from this film were filmed at the same shopping center in Lakeland, FL as Edward Scissorhands and a few other films.
