Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness got off to a strong start at the box office, but Sam Raimi's sequel doesn't seem to be polling too well with audiences, as the film received a B+ CinemaScore.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness may have gotten off to a strong start at the box office (both in The US and overseas), but Sam Raimi's mind-bending sequel doesn't seem to be polling as high with audiences as previous MCU movies.

The Master of the Mystic Arts' second solo outing received a B+ CinemaScore, and while that may not sound too bad, this is only the third time an MCU film has scored lower than an A. Eternals was given a franchise low B, but everything else has been graded A- and above since Thor's B+ in 2011.

CinemaScores don't necessarily mean a whole lot since they only poll a small amount of moviegoers leaving the theater on opening night, but it will be interesting to see if In The Multiverse of Madness continues to perform well over the next week or so. The reviews have been (mostly) positive (you'll find our verdict here), although its Rotten Tomatoes score has now dipped to 76%.

In Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, with Michael Stühlbarg, and Rachel McAdams. The film is directed by Sam Raimi, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Eric Hauserman Carroll and Jamie Christopher serve as executive producers. The screenplay was written by Michael Waldron.

The Doctor Strange sequel is now in theaters.

I was honestly underwhelmed, its not a bad movie, but It was too sloppy in places.

What I liked,
They committed to Wanda being the villain, though it nulls the fact Wanda saw the error of her ways in her WandaVision arc to then going full sociopath and murdering who ever stood in her way, Darkhold or not, Olsen KILLED it though, and Wanda is definitely the most tragic character in the MCU.

The Illuminati! Loved hearing the animated Xmen theme song for Prof. X's appearance, Krasinki's fan casting being manifested and some redemption with the recasting of Mount as Blackbolt. Their suits were on point. 👌🏽

Some of the horror elements, I especially liked how she made short work of the Illumnati, mouthless Blackbolt 😵, popping brains and snapping necks.

The first 20 minutes felt like prime Raimi.

What didn't work for me,
The writing/pacing was hokey, such as.. whose idea was that terrible 'Strange Musical Note Battle' *CRINGE*. The ending also didn't flow well into the post credit scene...He was corrupted? then 2 minutes later he's accepted it? Walking gleefully then jumping away with Clea? Who btw looked like Theron just doing cosplay. It was nice to see her, but I wish more care was put into her look.

Some of the VFX was not up to standard, an example... The animation where Wanda comes out of the reflection looked like budget CW stuff, there's more than that though.
Slight nitpick, Strange's wig looked BAD during that wedding scene.

It may just be that Marvel's movies have plateaued for me as I seem to be less excited by their new stuff, but I actually enjoyed Hawkeye more than MoM. I'll check it out again when it comes out on Disney +.

@UniqNo - 100% agree with you with the VFX stuff and Clea’s look. I wasnt excited at all when i saw her outfit and dagger/sword.

one of the most uneven superhero movies ive ever seen. reshot parts were obvious thanks to bad green screen, bad dialogue and wongs terrible wig. i loved the performances even if they were over the top at times. oh well..

@rebellion - Agreed. Though I felt Strange's wig(s) were worse. I didn't even notice Wong's I just though he had longer natural hair inbetween scenes showing up the reshoots

No way home ain't worth shit compared to this ACTUAL movie.

I know people wanted more cameos but cameos and fanservice don't make a movie.

The door to the Multiverse has been opened, there's always time to get more cameos, Secret Wars WILL *eventually* happen.

This is a very empty film considering the title. They hurtle through about fifty different universes but only visit two. I honestly think audiences would have responded better if it had a different title and the multiverse element was a nice little surprise. The multiverse premise has been done better in various films and TV shows. It also shouldn't be a 12a in the UK, not if The Batman and Venom are a 15. I took my ten year old to see it and they came out a little shaken. Glad I didn't take the six year old but I bet a lot of parents will this weekend because it's a marvel movie.

I've seen it twice, hoping it would grow on me and it didn't. It does have a strong third act and and pretty good start but loses its way In the middle.

That said my partner loved it and so did my best friend so I think it's going to split people roughly right down the middle. But because it is quite empty for such a high concept film, reviews might decline overtime. Happy for the people that can just take it as a wild ride for what's essentially a chase through a trippy haunted house with only a couple rooms.

@BeyondtheFuture - you didn't like Stephen's arc?
BeyondtheFuture

@Vigor - Talk me through the arc. At the beginning of the movie, he speaks to Christine and he tries to say I love you and I wish I'd done things differently but I can't because I need to put the world first. And at the end he says I love you but I have to do what's right and I have to put the world first.

Also I don't need to know why things didn't work with Christine. I know why because we learned in the first movie and the episode of What If.

He embraces dark or powerful magic as he did in the first film. He accepts he has to do what he must to save people which he does anyway in Infinity War.

The conversation at the beginning of the wedding was interesting and I thought they were going to play on that. Because we only have Strange's word that was the only way to win. That would have been cool if that had been revealed to be a lie.

His confrontation with the Illuminati would have been interesting if they had actually been smart instead of them doing exactly what every idiot police force does in a horror movie. Just because Stephen might be a threat doesn't mean someone else isn't. Reed Richards (allegedly the smartest superhero) basically walking up to Wanda to die is honestly I think one of the stupidest moments in a comic book movie. It was only done so we can get the "Is their mother alive?" live, which is fine but it wasn't necessary. Or, you know announcing exactly how Black Bolt could kill her so she can immediately disable that power.

I think they did need an Iron Man variant because Strange could have been confronted with someone who he somewhat sentenced to death by choosing a path and pushing him down it. Which again would have been cool if there was another way to beat Thanos.

But I'm game to learn your perspective because I'm guessing it's different to mine.

@BeyondtheFuture - Your displeasure makes quite a bit on sense though, since you took your kids to see it, expecting something different.

I totally get that, and it was definitely not a movie for children.

Personally, I friggin loved it. My new fav marvel movie.

However, the fact that you found it "empty" is very interesting to me. I cannot think of a more relatable and understandable villain than Wanda. She had to kill her husband, THEN watch him get brought back just to be killed at Thanos' hand. She watched her parents and brother get killed. THEN she goes a little nuts, but forms a family. Then she has to kill her own family AGAIN, this time with her children. To make matters worse, she finds out that they really are supposed to be her children.
I mean, hell, I'd probably go nuts and start killing everything that got in the way of me and my children at that point too.

She had the most compelling villain story in a marvel movie to date, IMO. And a hero story is only as good as it's villain. Wanda was the shit, and made this movie for me.

@Demigods - I only mean empty with regards to what's suggested by the title. I just don't understand why you'd call it that and only visit two different worlds. I would wager originally they had a lot more planned like how Thor: The Dark World was originally described as a quest across different worlds akin to a realm hopping LoTR.

I will agree she was a decent villain. Probably one of the best they've had up there with Thanos and Loki and Killmonger and Ego.

The Dream Walking scene and how she took over the other Wanda was very cool. The fact that they beat her by showing her that her kids saw her as a monster was great too.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate this movie, It's got some stand out moments (Zombie Strange). I just expected it to be slam dunk and for me it wasn't.
