As we write this, Eternals has a 49% critic score and an 83% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It's looking a lot like fans don't necessarily agree with critics, which is something we've seen happen a lot in the past. Now, we have a CinemaScore for the Marvel Studios movie based on moviegoers polled as they were leaving the theater on opening night.
With a "B," Eternals has received the lowest CinemaScore for any Marvel Studios movie to date.
They've all received "A-" and above since Thor's "B+" in 2011. Earlier this year, Black Widow received an "A-," while Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings received an "A." Of course, it's worth noting that CinemaScore doesn't really count for much and is only based on a very small number of paying moviegoers. Despite that, it's an undeniably interesting result.
In box office news, Deadline is reporting that Eternals scored an estimated $30 million on Friday, which includes Thursday's $9.5 million from preview screenings. As a result, it remains on track for a $70 million - $75 million opening weekend in North America. That's been the projected figure for weeks, so negative reviews don't appear to have mattered in the least.
"A powerful, sweeping exploration of love, life, and the MCU’s history, Eternals occasionally stumbles, but when it soars, this is Marvel Studios at its magnificent best," we said in our review.
