ETERNALS Writer Questions Whether GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Villain Ego Is Really A Celestial

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Ego the Living Planet claimed to be a Celestial. However, Eternals appears to debunk this, and one of the movie's writers has now addressed Ego's true MCU status...

Guardians of the Galaxy first introduced us to the concept of Celestials in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while the sequel revealed that Star-Lord's father, Ego the Living Planet, was one of these god-like beings. He's never been a Celestial in the comic books, and the events of Eternals further muddied the waters of whether the villain's story was true.

In Chloe Zhao's film, we learn that the Celestials are seeded in planets and then destroy those worlds when they emerge (following millions of years of feeding off its inhabitants). That doesn't really line up with what we know about Ego, something Eternals writer Kaz Firpo acknowledged in an interview with The Direct.

"We talked about it at length, but it's one of those things where I think that maybe [Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3] will have something to say about it," the writer teased. "Ego's a really fascinating character, whether he's lying or not, that's a question..."

"I think that you've seen the Celestials now in our film, what they are, what they're capable of, the fact that they are truly as large as planets, give birth to suns, and they're immortal space gods -- even more than our tiny little immortal space gods," Firpo continued. "So I think it's going to be something that we're going to continue to get to explore a little bit."

Confirming the Eternals are unaware of Ego's existence, he adds: "Was he an imposter? I don't know, but I'm excited to see James Gunn's Guardians 3 as much as you are."

One possible explanation is that a seed was planted in the world that would become known as Ego, but something went wrong, and the process created little more than a brain that made the planet sentient. That would basically make the villain a Deviant Celestial, and there is a chance Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 plans to address this in some way, shape, or form.

Eternals is now playing in theaters.

I really don't think that's something he'd lie about. But even if it's reasonable to assume he'd lie about it, I think it'd be better if they used ego to build up what the celestials are instead of just going "no he's not one".

@dragon316 - Didn't you read the article? The movie deviates(see what I did there?) from the comics like the MCU do from time to time.

It really seems like mcu forgot the meaning of the word 'consistency' somewhere along the way. Constantly retconning themselves.

@rebellion - This is nothing new. All the way from Iron Man 1, we have things like SHIELD being a new thing (they hadn't even really decided their own name yet), only for later movies to ignore/retcon that. This isn't actually inherently a bad thing. People say that MCU is the only succesful Cinematic Universe to date, because "they had a plan", but it would be more accurate to say that they were/are flexible enough with their plans that, if better ideas come along or the audience reacts to something differently than anticipated, they aren’t stuck with a route they are unhappy with. WB/Zack Snyder had a plan and now, when said plans flopped, everything about DCEU as a Universe is a mess and they are in too deep to completely course-correct.

Ugh who cares? They obviously made him to be a celestial when GOTG 2 was being made. Back then, they might not have considered that they're going to introduce the classic celestials down the line, which will ultimately create an inconsistency with Ego's claim. You could just say that the Celestials can come in many forms and go about your day.
I swear this is the most annoying thing about shared universes. Not everything has to have a clear cut answer and connection to evertyhing. Just tell good stories and don't worry about the insignificant little details.

@SauronthePower - Oh yeah I forgot about little Eson the Searcher. I always thought of it as a little Easter egg for the comic fans, but not an explicit declaration of the celestials and what they can and can't look like.
But if it was, then there we go. They had a classic looking celestial in the first movie and then they were like [frick] it, and made a brain floating in space for the sequel.

I like that a seed was planted, but instead turned into a brain is a good as any explanation. One question though: are the seeds planted in yet to form planets, or are they planted in already fully formed planets?

Otherwise, who's the say that all Celestials didn't start out as floating brains? Only the others managed to actually form a body and group together.

Atticus - 11/11/2021, 6:58 AM
@bkmeijer - Exactly, I think there's enough room for us to fill in the gaps and theorise. I like the idea that a seed was planted but maybe there wasn't enough intelligent life on his planet to feed off or the intelligent life died off, so Ego become a 'half-born' celestial and was shunned and forgotten by the others, but he found a way to live on. It would also explain his need to dominate the rest of the universe. He's insecure and ironically has 'small man syndrome' when compared to the other celestials. Maybe he even planted a seed in earth in an attempt to take over the growing body of Tiamut inside, and was doing the same to other growing celestials. There's endless possibilities here to expand the lore rather than dismiss as an inconsistency.

bkmeijer2 - 11/11/2021, 7:09 AM
@Atticus - I forgot about Ego planting seeds on other planets, but now that you mention it I could see all the planets Ego visited being planets that harboured Celestial seeds. That would be an interesting twist.

I mean he is E G O

He looked nothing like Eson from GOTG 1. Probably an unborn Celestial or a Celestial experiment gone wrong at the very least

Ego strikes me as a lost child, who began his existance all alone in the universe, not knowing what he is or what he's capable of. And he slowly had to find it out himself. Literally making himself.
I think he is a Celestial, but maybe he began his life as a premature baby Celestial. Maybe the planet that was supposed to harbor him was destroyed.

Hey, maybe his incubation planet was a victim of Galactus, who exists to destroy Celestials before they can be born but he miraculously survived.

Yeah! That's my head canon for now! :)

I like to think he is a rogue celestial, or an experiment by the Celestials that went wrong. Gotta remember Deviants were an experiment as well but with a fault, Ego could've gone the same route.

It sounds like he is celestial (dweller of heaven) but not a Celestial (A race of cosmic beings). Ego kind of sounds like his own thing. Were the Celestials weren't necessarily born through a consciousness like he was? If i remember correctly they were created through the First firmament.

I like the explanation of Ego just not fully developing like Tiamut and others did. Perhaps his planet got destroyed prematurely leaving his seed floating in space, or the planet didn't have enough life on it to support his full development. I could buy either option. Connect Ego's seeds to other Celestial seeds does add to his character in a way I like. Also, some of the clockwork imagery that Ego used and the way he made his humanoid avatar does seem fairly consistent with how Eternals were shown to be made by the Celestials.

Someone goofed and referred to Ego as a celestial in the script. It's likely that simple. But if they can weave it in narratively, then good for them.
