T H E M E S

Batman: Knightfall explores the theme of loss and how our main characters (Bruce Wayne, Victor Fries and James Gordon) deal with it in different ways.

Bruce Wayne is forever trying to come to terms with the loss of his parents, which results in his transformation into Batman. He must also deal with his failings as the CEO of his parents company Wayne Enterprises and his failings as mentor to Dick Grayson but moreover to Jason Todd, the former Boy Wonder who was murdered at the hands of The Joker and Harley Quinn.

Victor Fries struggles to deal with the loss of his wife Nora Fries. He blames Wayne Enterprises for her death, and Ferris Boyle in particular for turning off her life support. When a lab accident makes him dependent on sub-zero temperates he begins to lose touch with humanity. Driven only by revenge, he turns into a cold, sadistic psychopath.

Police Commissioner James Gordon must come to terms with the abuse his daughter suffered at the hands of The Joker which has left her paralysed from the waist down and in a comatose state. Despite the ordeal, Gordon's sanity remains intact and he insists that The Joker still be brought in by the book in order to show him and the people of Gotham that law still way works.

Great casting man. I honestly wouldn't have picked Woody Harrelson if you gave me a year to put it together, but seeing him up there and thinking on some of his past work...all I can say is bravo. The themes you bring up, loss and revenge, are really interesting and I would love to see some more details (Is Freeze totally removed from the lives that he takes/damages in his bid for revenge or does he have a "no innocents" code that parallels Bruce's? Would there be a moment/scene where Gordon & Bats/Bats & Freeze reflect on loss and revenge and how they see it - like the diner scene in "Heat" even though I have no idea how that would work LOL) Very interesting stuff. Keep up the good work.

Also, the pictures are working on my end

@mtwiggs - Harrelson as Fries came to me after seeing him in War for the Planet of the Apes as well as looking back at his work in True Detective.

I think I'd have Fries seeking revenge on his employer, Wayne Enterprises. This leads to him murdering Ferris Boyle, having a confrontation with Alfred Pennyworth in search of Bruce Wayne, and a confrontation with Bats. Freeze could subdue Batman (freezing his arm to something/creating a barricade between the two) and tell him he's not going to stop, and that if he gets in his way again he won't hesitate ala 'Heat' (which is a swell idea, I love that!).

A good take on the characters and you picked each role well, that I completely agreed with them.

The pics don't work on my end.

- Really not feeling Woody Harrelson as Mr. Freeze. I don't care if he did great in War of the Planet of the Apes (he did, don't get me wrong) or True Detective. He just doesn't scream Victor Fries.
- I think Gwendoline Christie would be better off as Big Barda. As Ellen Yindel, it seems rather reductive to cast her there.
- I'm glad people cast Ray Liotta even though people don't acknowledge him anymore.
- My thoughts of Keri Russell as Nora Fries would be the same as your Ellen Yindel choice. After The Americans, she's got quite a bit to prove even in her 40's.
- Wow, Dakota Johnson? People hate her guts. The word "nepotism" is brought up when people talk about her. I guess I wouldn't mind her as Barbara. But what about Willa Fitzgerald from Scream. Apparently she's playing a NAVY pilot in a TV version of Behind Enemy Lines, and she's fantastic with psychodrama after Scream. Also, she's a better actress.

Oh, and what happened to your other fancasts for Gotham City Sirens and Nightwing?

@MikeZ - Fair enough in regards to Fries, each to their own. I wouldn’t have considered him before War. I think he’s a great actor who could create a character that the audience could really sympathize with. Fries is a really tragic character who’s loss really mirrors Batman. I’m curious, who you would your pick/s for the role be?

I’m not sure what you mean when you say reductive to cast her as Yindel. As in it’s role too small for an actor of her calibre? Because in theory her role would grow over the sequels to where she replaces Gordon as police commissioner.

Liotta is great, his more recent work in The Place Beyond The Pines and Killing Them Softly particularly.

Dakota Johnson does get a bad wrap. I can understand it in regards to Fifty Shades (which even Dornan is terrible in) but all her other work has been really solid in my opinion. I’ve seen Fitzgerald in horror tv series but nothing about her screams (pun intended) Bab’s for me.

In regards to the later pitches I’ve decided to go into a bit more detail with each one, one at a time. Hopefully it doesn’t come across as excessive to split it into 4 parts?

Thanks for the feedback my man, you got anything in the works yourself?

@MrMurdock - Honestly, I wouldn't know who to cast as Mr. Freeze. That'll be a tough one.

Let me rephrase my statement: I'm just not really convinced of Gwendoline as a good choice for Yindel. As I said, she's a good enough size for Big Barda. And she wears battle garbs convincingly.

Well, when the Behind Enemy Lines TV series comes out, we'll see. I would recommend Willa to cram on computer classes and maybe take up police training beforehand. But other than that, she has the psychological aspects down for Barbara.

If I ever get around to it, I'll do a Street Fighter fancast. So far, I have Suki Waterhouse as Cammy White and Jason Momoa as T. Hawk.

Love it man, good work. Woody Harrelson is a left-field choice for Freeze but now that I think about it he would kill it. Also I see the Matt Reeves - Woody Harrelson connection from Apes, which is smart. I always had the exact same idea of changing from Mr. Freeze to Mr. Zero! It’s a little less cheesy especially considering Victor’s last name is also freeze (Fries). Mr. Freeze is overdue for a modern reinvention after Shumaker’s atrocity. Would be interesting to see how it would be pulled off in a more realistic less campy universe.
Great choices on your castings and on theme analysis. With yours and with the DCEU I question the need for a Nightwing solo though. Always seemed like Batman-lite with worse villains. But I always enjoy when Nightwing cameos in Batman stories.
Looking forward to your next articles.

@Elayem - Freeze is LONG overdue for a reininvention. I can enjoy Batman and Robin for what it is now, I can laugh almost all the way through without getting mad about how badly the characters were.. interpreted. But if we didn’t have Schumaker’s take kill the franchise would we have seen Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilgogy? It’s blessing in disguise really. But I wish they let Burton go ahead with his 3rd Batman flick.

I can understand what you mean in regards to Nightwing, he’ll feature once or twice before his own solo flick to help establish his character.

Cheers man, I’ll shoot you a message when I’ve got the next one up?

Great point, it all worked out in the end. Yeah I’ve read about Burton’s Batman 3, it couldve been really cool.

Sounds good thanks! Cheers
