Emma Roberts = Gwen Stacy: Why Have We Not Seen It?

Emma Roberts = Gwen Stacy: Why Have We Not Seen It?

All this time, we all have assumed Emma Roberts was in line to possibly play Mary Jane Watson, but if you look deeper... Emma is actually ideal to play Gwen Stacy!

Ok, now this is really my personal thoughts, so don't take this as me trying to preach. But, moving on...

Today when an interview of Emma was revealed by MTV, of her claiming "You Never Know!", when asked if she was in talks for the Spider-Man reboot, peaked my interest.

What a weird way to respond if you were NOT in talks... with my knowledge that Gwen Stacy is supposed to be the main love interest this time around, I started thinking about Emma as Gwen and when I found some pictures of Emma as a blonde, I felt as if I was looking at Gwen taken right off the page.

For me, Emma maintains that look Gwen has: pretty, not really as stunning as Mary Jane, but you could beleive she could fall for Peter Parker.

Then, just for arguments sake, being that this reboot has been rumored to be based off Ultimate Spider-Man for the most part (I dont beleive it), I took the liberty of also comparing Emma to Ultimate Gwen.

Emma resembles Ultimate Gwen perfectly, I am putting my foot down and letting all of you guys know that Emma Roberts would be a perfect Gwen Stacy for the reboot.

Too anyone that questions her acting, why? She comes from the same gene pool as the great Eric Roberts and his sister Julia Roberts, if that is any indication at all then Emma Roberts can be a brilliant actress.

So, anyone else agree with me that Marc Webb should set his sights on pairing Andrew Garfield and Emma Roberts together for the July 3, 2012 film?

@P862010: Even though I don't totally oppose this.... You're right unless Webb can make them look as believable on screen as Martin Campbell made Daniel Craig and Eva Green when they were 12 years apart.

I can see her more as the original Gwen than the Ultimate version. She does not have anywhere near the attitude for the USM Gwen.

The movie is not 'rumored' to be based off of USM that is the official information Sony released. How close they will follow the comics is always unknown but the basis of the movie is the Ultimate version.

I quoted and put the links in comments to another article. But the info was from the Hollywood Reporter and the LA Times which are both pretty good sources.

LA Times...

"In a back story twist reminiscent of the evolution of “Superman” into “Smallville,” the studio said in a statement that the new web-slinger film will focus “on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.”

http://heatvision.hollywoodreporter.com/2010/01/marc-webb-to-direct-spiderman.html

"... And the story will be pared down to center on a high school kid who is dealing with the knowledge that his uncle died even though the teen had the power to stop it.

The touchstone for the new movie will not be the 1960s comics, which were the inspiration behind the movies by Raimi, who grew on up on them, but rather this past decade's "Ultimate Spider-Man" comics by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley where the villain-fighting took a back seat to the high school angst."

I like JoshW's casting:
Photobucket
Roberts for Liz

Photobucket
Palmer for Gwen

Photobucket
Stone for MJ

I think Stone has the right look and attitude to play MJ. Let's not forget MJ was the "bad girl" in the original Spider-Man run. She was the irresponsible party girl to Gwen's girl next door. After seeing Stone in Zombieland, I really think she could pull off the role of Peter's wild child friend with chemistry. I think seeing her character develop feelings for Peter and then having to deal with the idea that she'd missed her chance. Then see the relationship come to fruition in a few movies after Gwen is killed and MJ and Peter can act on their feelings after picking up the pieces.

Ideally I think the sequence of films should be; the intro in this new reboot, Gwen's death and Goblin by the third film, and the intro of the symbiote in four. The timing of the symbiote on the heels of Gwen's death would lend credence to the darker Spider-Man, his negative feeling and emotional state in upheaval works perfectly to a slide to the dark side. Throw in Black Cat as a wild but superficial rebound girl, and then Pete finally coming to his senses thanks to MJ and her being threatened by Venom in a fifth or sixth film. It lends itself to a much more fulfilling and better developed story line than the rushed chronology of the Raimi films.

I think stretching out the Peter/MJ relationship will be the driving romantic arch of the films. Anyone who had seen the original movies will know MJ ends up with Peter, but the romantic tension of seeing them circle each other for a while will really make it seem worth it.

My suggested plot line:
Spidey One: Intro, Lizard and Kraven, into of Norman.
Spidey Two: Mysterio intro of Norman as Goblin
Spidey Three: Goblin and the death of Gwen.
Spidey Four: Symbiote, Black Cat/MJ tension. and Doc Ock
Spidey Five: Freedom from Symbiote, falls from MJ, Venom
Spidey Six: Sinister Six.

At least this reboot will give us the chance to see Pete's love life, Green Goblin, the Symbiote, and Venom done correctly.

@Nero

I hope you are right about that last line you wrote. But I tend to think what we are going to see is a big set of all new screw ups for people to bitch about. Raimi is a fan just like us and I am betting Webb ain't.

Raimi being like us may actually have been part of the problem. There are those great directors who like comics. There are those great directors who disdain them. There are those directors who know nothing about them, but are great at telling stories.

For those like Raimi and Mark Steven Johnson, who love comics, their knowledge can work against them. They know the characters and their eventual story archs and where they will end up in the present day. They also have their favorite parts and villains and tend to cherry pick the things they like and neglect those they don't. See Raimi's handling of Venom.

Those that disdain comics like Nolan will try their damnedest to make their film anything, but a comic movie. They transcend the genre in their efforts sometimes as in TDK, and shun it in other ways; like his refusal to acknowledge the idea that there are other heroes.

The third breed; those who know little about comics, but are great story tellers are the guys I look for. Branaugh, and Favreau are in that bunch, so too I hope is Webb. These guys realize that a hero story is a character piece first and foremost. The action is all about the character in the situation and can see things with fresh eyes. They can pick out what’s important about the character, but not bog themselves down in the little details. These guys know they have two and a half hours to tell a story and can’t be bothered to try to cram in references to 40 years of chronology into that time frame. They just focus on the story.

A fan can be too specific and rush the story or lose it in the details.
A disdainer can engorge the story and shun the character in an effort to explore the larger themes.
A storyteller will bring out the character in the eye of the storm.

I have hope for the reboot because after seeing 500 Days of Summer I trust in Webb's ability to handle characters. That is half the battle right there.

Interesting break-down Nero.

It is unfair to judge Raimi by III. When you put Spider-Man II and TDK together I think they are equally good based the normal movie standards.

But for me Spider-Man II wins hands down because it is truer to it's roots. I am kinda wondering what people will think of Nolan if he gets messed with and Batman III gets all wierd.

I have not seen 500 days yet. But so far it looks like he had two good people as the basis which is very important. Then he used camera moves and non-linear sequences to make the most common of things very interesting. If that is the case I will have an appreciation for the technical skill but that will be about it. He could be the next great Director I freely admit I do not know yet.

I began my Articles on CBN with a very broad positive one because most of the time I find things to enjoy in every CBM. I can be critical but that does not get in the way of just going with the movie and eeking whatever fun out of it I can. Not a negative guy and really hate to be on the hater side of the fence for any CBM.

I just have this growing feeling of utter doom about this movie. I would be happy to be utterly wrong.

I heard him say that too I just do not know what it really means. I might mean he just now looked at USM and thought it was ok. Somehow I doubt it means he had read them before taking the job.
