First off, I want to say that I enjoyed Zack Snyder's adaptation. However, I got a beaten up copy of
Watchmen at my library, and it has become one of my favorite reads (along with
Batman: Knightfall). I wanted to do my own cast since nobody has cared to make one (with the exception of the JacobCityBros., who did an african american version).
Anyway, for the director, I chose David Fincher (director of
Se7en,
Fight Club, and
Zodiac). He's one of my favorite directors and, in my opinion, should have been the person to helm the project.
Anyway, here's the cast:
William Fichtner as Walter Kovacs/Rorschach: A morally uncompromising vigilante who continues his operations despite the Keene Act of 1977 outlawing costume vigilantes (unless they have the support of the government). While investigating the murder of Edward Blake, he discovers that Blake was his fellow vigilante the Comedian. He then forms his own theory of someone killing off former costumed heroes.
Reason for Casting: To be honest, I loved Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach. However, Fichtner is a brilliant actor. His gravelly voice and psychotic look also convinced that he can be as great as Haley's Rorschach.
Nathan Fillion as Daniel Dreiberg/Nite Owl ll: The second person to take on the person of Nite Owl. Dreiberg uses a variety of owl themed gadgets, including an airship named "Archie". Ever since the Keene Act passed, Dreiberg has become pudgy and impotent, and longs for his days as Nite Owl.
Reason for Casting: Although this may seem like a stupid reason for casting him, Fillion has a certain vibe to him that makes me think he would be great as Nite Owl. Other than that, he's a great actor.
James Caviezel as Jon Osterman/Doctor Manhattan: A scientist who gained God-like powers after being trapped in an "Intrinsic Field Subtractor". He then worked with the US Government, greatly improving technology. He also helped win the Vietnam War by defeating the Vietcong and preventing the fall of Saigon. He is one of the few vigilantes active because of his work with the US Government. Osterman begins to slowly lose his humanity and distances himself with mankind. His power include teleportation, control over matter, and near total clairvoyance. He sees past, present, and future, but can not act on these events due to them being pre-determined.
Reason for Casting: Caviezel has played a role similar to Manhattan (Jesus of Nazareth in Mel Gibson's
The Passion of the Christ). After making observations between the two, I had a sure-fire feeling that Caviezel would be brilliant in the role.
Olivia Wilde as Laurie Juspeczyk/Silk Spectre ll: The daughter of the first Silk Spectre. Her mother made her follow in her footsteps, and she fought crime for ten years before the Keene act was passed. She is in a relationship with Manhattan, and therefore, is kept on a retainer by the government.
Reason for Casting: Laurie was one of the harder characters to cast. I considered Natalie Portman, but she didn't feel right for the role. However, Aicira suggested Wilde for me. I consider Wilde to be a great actress, and I casted her based on a gut feeling.
Michael C. Hall as Adrien Veidt/Ozymandias: A former superhero who patterns himself after Alexander the Great and Ramesses ll. At the age of 17, he inherited his parents' fortune, but gave it away to see if he cold be successful by himself, following Alexander's path. Veidt revealed his secret identity t the public two years before the Keene Act was passed. He then marketed his image, creating his Veidt Enterprises. He is highly intelligent, the media claiming him the be the "smartest man on the planet". He is also extremely athletic, being able to catch a bullet.
Reason for Casting: Michael has played a highly intelligent character before on
Dexter. Besides that, he played a character similar to Veidt in
Gamer.
Thomas Jane as Edward Blake/The Comedian: One of the two government sponsored heroes after the Keen Act was passed. He is nihilistic, ruthless, and cynical, believing that humans are savage in nature and that civilization is nothing more than an idea. He became a mockery of society as the Comedian, fighting and killing without reservation. Laurie Juspeczyk has a hatred for him because her tried to rape her mother (although Sally Jupiter forgave him). His death sets the events of
Watchmen in motion.
Reason for Casting: Jane was once rumored for the role. If you give him a mustache and add some grey to his hair, then he would be a good pick (in my opinion).
Susan Sarandon as Sally Jupiter: The first Silk Spectre and domineering "stage mom" of Laurie. She currently lives in a retirement home in California and adores the attention she receives from the fans of the "Silk Spectre".
Reason for Casting: Susan is a very talented actress and was the first person that popped into my mind when casting Sally. I'm sorry that I could not find a picture of Sally Jupiter.
Michael Douglas as Hollis Mason: The first Nite Owl, who is good friends with Daniel Dreiberg and has weekly "beer sessions" with him.
Reason for Casting: Douglas was one of the names that I thought of when casting the character. My second choice was Bruce Greenwood, but I decided to go with Douglas.
