Hey all. Its MILLAR TIME!!!!! As some of you may have read, seen, and know that one of my favorite all time writers is Mark Millar. I love the way he mixes pop culture, violence, and his ego into his comics. He's the one who helped us see the civil war amongst Marvel heroes and he is one of the creators of the Ultimates universe, which I believe if helped create it, he will help to destroy it. Millar's current work is Nemesis, his gory and violent take on the Batman type of character and once that wraps up we will see him taking on the Superman type with his upcoming Superior which is about a 13 yr old boy who turns into a superman/captain marvel type, quite a turn from Nemesis.
So we have seen and are gonna see a take on two of DC's biggest heroic staples, Batman and Superman. So once he is done with those two and he will finish with KICK-ASS VOL 2, I wonder what kind of characters will be Millar-ized in the future. The idea of taking these staples and putting new spins on them has been done before plenty of times. Just look at Image comics, it seems all their Costumed hero comics are just an "extreme" version of well established and "BETTER" characters. However Millar takes these tropes and makes a great twist with them.Take a look at WANTED which is a good example that idea, each of the villains were a tribute to characters Marvel and DC created and as I mentioned, made them totally original and a more violent version of their counterparts.
So which characters would you like to see Millar take and create a unique spin on them. So once again this will be list of 5 characters I would like to Mark Millar do a Millar-ized form. with that lets begin with #5.
#5. Wonder Woman: One form of characters Millar hasn't quite done with are females, his best works were with Fox from WANTED and Hit-girl from KICK-ASS, but these two are vastly different in terms of characters and appeal. Giving Mark Millar a chance at doing an homage with the first Super Heroine. I haven't really thought about what other culture he could do since the Amazonian warrior women are pretty well established. UNLESS, he were to make the heroine a Valkyrie, on perhaps do some research on various female warriors from a culture we rarely seen used.
#4. The Flash: This one seems pretty simple to do, yet pulling off would be interesting. The idea of the world fastest man has been done in Marvel and DC, so in a way he could combine the characteristics of Barry Allen or Wally West with Quicksilver. One idea could be about a paraplegic boy or girl, and after an accident involving chemicals give him/her the gift of walk but they have no control of the momentum of their feet and can reach sonic speeds.
#3. Dr. Fate: now heres a character I would love to see Millar-ized. Considered to be the Dr. Strange of the DC universe, even tho Fate was created way before Strange. The one thing Millar has rarely touched upon in any of his works are the Mystical arts, even in the Ultimates universe which downplayed the magical elements of the original 616 universe. As I said I like to see more inclusion with magic and the mystical element, they shouldn't be seen as cheap cop-outs or simple fixes, but can be used in some cool ways.
#2. Teen Titans: Not just one but a whole team of teenage crime fighters from various worlds and heroic backgrounds fighting against a Trigon like villain. Now perhaps KICK-ASS vol 2 will have some elements like that, because the mention of a team of heroes joining together, but I would still like to see his take on the side-kick hero team
and the #1 DC character I would like to see "Millar-ized" is....
#1. Green Lantern: Talk about working with a lot of potential. Now Warren Ellis has done a take on the Lantern Corps with an issue of Planetary which was a great issue to read. So by taking the idea of a space cop with a power battery of some kind with a power ring derived from the mental will of a person, alien or human. Seeing Millar taking that aspects that Geoff Johns helped reestablished in the DC universe would be a really cool thing to see. Millar does great with adding some sense of realism to his stories. In fact he has done the Green Lantern's before in his amazing Superman: Red Son. So he has the basic formula down, now all he has to do is make it something new and fresh.
And theres my take on what I hope we get to see from the egotistical mind of Mark Millar, love him or hate him, you gotta admit that what he makes and creates is a worthy read and something you will talk about with others. See you all when I post my comic reviews, AKI87 OUT!!!!
