The Avengers 1963

The Avengers 1963

Here is another period piece fancast. This time we’ll do the Avengers. They debut in Sept. 1963, so we’ll stick with actors of that year.

We all know the 2012 version of the Avengers is going to be great. I think the 1963 version would have been more like a gangster, car chase, shoot ‘em up type movie. These actors could actually pull off some very good comedy scene as well as dramatic ones.

Iron Man-Sean Connery
*Tony stark is a wealthy playboy, so was Connery as Bond. Ladies man.*

Thor- Chuck Conners (DDD)
*Damm, I gotta go with 6'6" blonde Chuck on this one too DDD, but that's it! LOL*

Hulk-Anthony Perkins *isleepnow* (Bruce Banner) Rock Hudson (Hulk)
*I really like Perkins, Don't know why it never occured to me before and Hudson looks like a he had a secret side to him.*

Wasp-Natalie Wood
*Wood had a sophisticated beauty just like Janet Van Dyne*

Ant Man- Robert Wagner
*Wagner looks like a genius and is well spoken, he could say scientific terms and make you believe he knew what he was talking about and he was Natalie’s man in reality*

Captain America-Robert Redford
*I liked Steve McQueen alot as Cap, but i can't deny Redford IS Steve Rogers, I stand corrected*

Hawkeye-Elvis Presley
*Presley was as cool as they come just like Hawkeye*

Scarlet Witch-Elizabeth Taylor
*Taylor had a scary beauty to her and played regal characters pretty well*

Quicksilver- George Peppard
*Peppard looks like he would be an arrogant s.o.b anyway*

Vision-Richard Burton
*I knew I could get him back in here and since Liz married him 47 times I think he would make a great vision anyways and I know he didn't show up until 68*

Black Widow-Ann Margret
*Margret was very sexy when she was young, but that quickly faded by the 70’s, so I’m glad this is the 60’s*

Black Panther-Sydney Poitier
*Poitier is one of the best actors of all time and he would own this role, probably have a spinoff in ’65 too.*

Namor-Jack Palance
*Palance is a perfect match for Namor. Mean, nasty and bad *

Count Nefaria-Paul Newman
*Newman can play an egotistical arrogant character that you can’t help but like (Cool Hand Luke)*

Baron Zemo-Charles Bronson
*Bronson was from a Russian family and changed his name, so he could have done the accent---AGER picked this one too a year or so back for his cast, I'll never change this one either*

Kang The Conquerer-Rod Taylor
*Taylor was pretty popular and played many different characters in 63*

Loki-Dirk Bogarde
*Bogarde had the slim features and malevolent look*

Edwin Jarvis- David Niven
*Niven or Peter Sellers, it was a toss up, Niven won with the accent and moustache*

and special guest star
Nick Fury-Robert Stack
*Stack was a super cop on The Untouchables so he can pull off super spy Nick Fury*

Wow! I haven't seen a cast like this in years! Well done!

I like it man, all but one.

If we are going with people of the period, I would have to give Cap to Robert Redford. To me he will always be the perfect Cap as far as physical demeanor and acting ability

I'd watch McQueen and Bronson play tag for 2 hours. A fist fight with them two would be too much.

Elvis was The King and all, but he was a pretty bad actor.

I think you should ajust a few of the choices, in my opinion some of these actors were a little too expensive for something like this. My recommendations include:
-James Franciscus as Hawkeye
-Hazel Court or Diana Rigg as Scarlet Witch
-James Mason as Count Nefaria
-Peter Cushing as Jarvis
-I would suggest replacing Hudson with an actor with a bigger build, a different actor for Baron Zemo since the character is German, not Russian, and have a younger actor for Quicksilver, since he and the Witch were what, early-20's when they joined?
But good job for the other choices--although you could leave Tony Curtis as Iron Man up in the air...

@ager-just checked it out we got the same taste in a bunch of these. That was a very very good cast. I'm using Sutherland in a Defenders cast next week.

@Flix-I was saying Bronson could pull off the german accent. I thought about Rigg but, Taylor has spooky eyes and I went with her. Peter Cushing as Jarvis is great, I almost went with Sellers, glad I didn't.

you got to remember if a movie was actually made like this back then it wouldn't have been anything like the action flicks of today. Avengers the musical may have happened back then.
imagine Frankie avalon and annette funicello beach movies and the fights they had.

@MaddMonkk
What about Hazel Court? I always thought that the Scarlet Witch, despite the 'spooky eyes' she has, looked very innocent, and Hazel did a great job in Hammer's The Curse of Frankenstein (1957).

Awesome fancast bro.
Sean Connery as Tony Stark is perfect, but I have never heard him do an American accent. Loving the Rock Hudson as the Hulk idea.. He was a pretty big dude.
I also have to say Richard Burton was way too small to play Thor. I'd say Peter O'Toole as Thor. He's 6'2 , and just would need some muscle..

Nice fancast MONKK@!
Very nice!

The only one that's not perfect is RICHARD
BURTON as THOR. Burton was pretty short.

I'd have blond, 6'6" CHUCK CONNORS as THOR.
Fantastic MONKK@!

MaddMonkk - 11/10/2011, 6:40 PM
i have to agree with you DDD, chuck is thor.

Very good fancast! The only thing i'd change would be Dean Martin as Tony Stark, they were both lushes!
Other than that i'd say you did one helluva job!

Have you ever watched Dean in any of those old Matt Helm spy spoof movies like The Ambushers? He reminded me of Tony Stark in those! I wish they'd make a Shield Agent similiar to Dino's Matt Helm character!
FlixMentallo21

@MaddMonkk
Will you at least think about Court, Franciscus, Mason, and maybe Richard Beymer as Quicksilver?
MaddMonkk
MaddMonkk - 11/11/2011, 12:52 AM
@I like Franciscus thought about saving him for DC cast, wasn't he the replacement astronaut from 2nd planet of the apes movie??
MaddMonkk
MaddMonkk - 11/11/2011, 12:53 AM
@Thunder-Victor Borge could do a decent Tony Stark too

Yes, he was, and before that he was a co-lead in the Ray Harryhausen movie The Valley of Gwangi (1969), where he played a cowboy. You should seriously use him for Hawkeye.
Thunderkutfo
Thunderkutfo - 11/11/2011, 6:55 PM
You're right! Borge did have the look plus he reminds me of some of the old villains Spider Man fought back then, he looks like someone Steve Ditko drew before!

ISleepNow - 11/13/2011, 11:23 AM
Fun idea, I don't know that I agree with most of your choices. I would make the following casting changes:

Stark was older than Sean Connery at this time. I would give the role to someone like William Holden who, like Robert Downey Jr, had a special connection to the character due to his real life battles with alchoholism

Bruce Banner maybe Tony Curtis

Anther interesting possible choice would be Anthony Perkins

Nick Fury, I would say Burt Lancaster definitely.

Natalie Wood would be great as Wasp but there are other good choices

Thor's a tough one, I'd say either Charleton Heston or Kirk Douglas

Ann-Margaret would make a good Black Widow but was rather young in 1963, I would say either Anita Ekberg or Gina Lollabrigida

As far as Cap goes, Robert Redford would be good, but I think Warren Beatty would truly own the part.

Hurrrrr...

That should've been, Warren Beatty..

Gotta say Anthony Perkins as Bruce Banner is a pretty damn good idea too!
