The Wolverine: Does it have potential?

2013 is building up to be the next 2012, minus Ghost Rider and another bad CBM. Do I think The Wolverine has potential? Find out here.

The X-Men films haven't been known for being "the best" movies out there and not the best CBM's. I for one, actually really enjoyed them. Yes, it gets harder to watch The Last Stand each time I do watch it. But, that doesn't mean this is a bad franchise. The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine were far from good but I didn't think they were all that bad. The first X-Men was the first superhero movie I ever saw in the theater and I loved it, X2: X-Men United was better. Hell, X-Men: First Class (as far as I am concerned) is the best. Does The Wolverine have a shot compared to the X-Men franchises long history and against the heavy hitters of 2013? In my opinion, yes. Here is why.

New look

The picture above is what I like to call a leaner, meaner Wolverine. He isn't bulky. He looks smaller and more agile. I think the new look for Wolverine is much cooler. Yes, most people think that they should go with the look from the comics and I've seen pictures put up in the comments of what a live action version would look like with Wolverines costume from the comics. Quite frankly, I think it looks stupid. It works for the comics and cartoons but not live action. Not everything can be and has to be translated to the big screen.

New Director

Gavin Hood had the right idea in my opinion, but then he gave us "Deadpool". He got the right Wade Wilson in Ryan Reynolds, but did NOT give us Deadpool. While I thought Wolverine was overall pretty good, it definitely did have ALOT of flaws and is the worst of the X-Men movies and had no continuity to it that made any sense. James Mangold is a good choice for, The Wolverine. Have you seen 3:10 to Yuma? I have only once, and I thought it was very good. I would have seen it more than once if I could find it. While no director has a perfect track record, not even Chris Nolan. James Mangold is a director I think can put Wolverine back on track and I think he is the man to adapt the most popular storyline onto film. From the pictures on set, I think he's doing a good job. Again, I think to see if Mangold is the man for the job, you have to look no further than 3:10 to Yuma.

It's Unique

The Wolverine isn't your typical superhero blockbuster. Well, can't really use the term blockbuster seeing how it's hard to tell how much it will make. The Wolverine is not your typical superhero movie, period. It has an unusual setting and story for a superhero film. I think personally, that if anyone thinks this is the typical superhero flick that they are out of their mind. They're crazy. I think also because of it's unique setting and story for a superhero flick that it's going to be possibly the best of next year and be "The TASM and First Class" of 2013. It's going to surprise people. Speaking of story...

The Story

"Based on the celebrated comic book arc, The Wolverine finds Logan, the eternal warrior and outsider, in Japan. There, samurai steel will clash with adamantium claw as Logan confronts a mysterious figure from his past in an epic battle that will leave him forever changed."

I don't know about you? But, think as a casual audience member and it does sound epic and I said before, the premise is completely unique for a superhero film. Wolverine is a popular character, so people are going to go just to see him kick ass. But die hard Wolverine fans and comicbook fans in general who are familiar to the story being adapted know that this is probably going to me a more emotional, more in depth story rather than all action like it's predecessor. Not to say there won't be action because I'm sure we'll have plenty of action but we will have more story and more depth than the previous films.

Overall: I think despite some harsh criticisms on this site towards this film, I think this has some serious potential. Given it's star is passionate about the character and is (in my mind) the perfect Wolverine. He captures the attitude perfectly. The films director and the writers on the project, not to mention the storyline they're adapting. I think this will be the surprise superhero flick of 2013. It's honestly my most look forward to film of the year.

What do you think? Comment below and be respectful. Honestly, this is my best article in awhile in my opinion.

@yossarian
agreed.

the first had potential when they mentioned the weapon x team and the whole idea that we may get the windsor-smith's weapon x story on the big screen.

personally, the x-men franchise is ok at best. its watchable but laughable at the same time. i was in high school when the first x film came out, and i loved it then. watching it years later i can put it in perspective with other films and I see it a bit differently.

at the end of the day, hope for the best, but be ready for the worst soul crushing film experience you can imagine. it can always go either way.

@AcidicHeart: No, I'm not saying that TASM and First Class were the best CBM's of their years. Well, actually First Class is the best CBM of 2011 in my opinion. TASM is far from it but not bad. What I mean by it being the TASM and First Class of its year is that it'll be the surprise hit and surprisingly good CBM.

@Jollem

Yeah, it's the same as the Raimi Spidey films. Suddenly everyone thinks they are terrible when the first 2 (especially #2) were considered to be some of the best CBMs ever back in the days. Even Spidey 3 was considered 'disappointing' nothing close to the 'blasphemy' that it is referred to as now.

I still maintain my position about all these films though.

X-Men 1 was meh
X-Men 2 was decent
X-Men 3 was utter shit
Origins was the worst ever
XMFC is one of the best ever

and, Spidey:
Spidey 1 was decent
Spidey 2 was phenomenal
Spidey 3 was decent till the ending, when it descended to shit
TASM was pretty good

And this film....

Meh, I'm so jaded with the non-Vaughn X-Men films that I really couldn't muster two shits to give about this if I tried.

I think this and Iron Man 3 are going to be great because of how they're both going to have storylines based on a comic story.

Wolverine is going to be shit. Mark my words. Reboot the series, in 3d, after charles has died and jean is the pheonix. put cyclops, wolverine, gambit, psylocke, storm, beast and rogue on the team, have a time travel cross over with first class and tie it in with first class. end of story. Jackman was never good in the role and I never liked the x-men movies until first class, I only liked the comics and animated show, which were far superior to the films. Wolverine is a great character, but he´s at his best with the x-men and when its not just about him.

Sorry but the films with jackman were all really bad, and i´ve never understood why anyone liked them or the spiderman films. apart from spiderman 2.

You know, the X-Men films were always my favorite of the Marvel ones. Having my first job and a super-disposable income, I saw X2 FOUR times in the theater.

I didn't care about the costumes. I didn't care about Rogue. The basic social themes, reflecting civil rights from a safe distance - those were impressively displayed. And add to the fact that they were simply COOL films.

Wolverine doesn't have that. Wolverine seems to be a focused character who would rather waste his potential on action violence, sex, and booze... than explore lifetimes of man's inhumanity to man.

Movies like Highlander - an immortal - a man who can only be killed if he is decapitated... would live for centuries, be part of history, show the audience a unique viewpoint (like Forrest Gump)... have potential.

If I'm wrong, I'd be very happy. Wolverine really isn't a character who has grown on me - he has such an immense fanbase that he's just EVERYWHERE - but I'm always wanting. Basically, even if they did do Wolverine the justice you want, it probably wouldn't be enough for me.

Still, it could be a good movie at the very least, and that is what I'll hope for.

@Tainted87: I always thought he was cool and thought that the Japan arc was good but I've never been an actual fan of the character. Alot of people I know who like the X-Men movies like them for being good action movies. I completely agree with you on the social themes in the films, that's one of my biggest attractions to the X-Men movies.

The jury is still out with me on this. I'm waiting to pass full judgement on this till the trailer is released. Hugh's new look is still sinking in.

This better get an R rating. I hated the last one because it was PG-13 and originally was supposed to be R but Jackman and Donner were concerned about kids seeing it so they toned it down.

You CANNOT have a Wolverine movie without blood in it. It's like toning down The Punisher.

I'm pretty sure blood and gore isn't going to make or break a movie.
