J.J. Abrams On Why 'Kylo Ren' Idolizes 'Darth Vader' In STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

Fans have been wondering why dark side warrior Kylo Ren chose make Vader his hero when the character ultimately embraced the light and destroyed the Emperor at the end of Return Of The Jedi. Director J.J. Abrams explains in a new interview. SPOILERS ahead...

We knew going into Star Wars: The Force Awakens that Kylo Ren was a big Darth Vader fanboy, but the reasons why are not really elaborated upon in the movie. Of course, it is revealed that Vader is (SPOILER alert) his grandfather, but surely Han, Leia and Luke would have explained that Anakin Skywalker ultimately rejected the dark side and brought balance to the force - so why was Kylo (or, Ben) so enamoured with and taken in by his Sith history?

J.J. Abrams offers a pretty good explanation during an interview with IGN.

“Kylo Ren idolizes Darth Vader, not Anakin Skywalker. He idolizes what Vader represents and what Vader was trying to do. And the idea that Vader didn’t succeed, if you look at it from Ren’s point of view, he was seduced by the enemy and failed because of that seduction. So the idea is that Ren wants to complete the thing that Vader started.”

The director also touches on how the great power in Ben Solo was able to be manipulated and turned to the dark side.

“An incredible power, an incredible force, and incredible potential that was, like many young people, sort of misguided and unclear. And the story for him is one of conflict, not just internal conflict but external conflict. And it’s what makes him a rather interesting villain.”

TFA had manage to make episode 8 more anticipated rather than episode 2 and 5, atleast if you look at TPM, ANH and TFA from a stand alone point of view.

Rian Johnson has every possibility to make the best Star Wars movie ever.
- Kylo Ren
- Luke Skywalker
- Rey
- Knights of Ren
- Snoke
- All out war in the galaxy?

Damn. A certain point of view.

Ren sympathizes with Vader because he was seduced by the light side. [frick]ing deep.

This is why Ren does what he did. Not to succumb to the light. And I love how he appears to be tormented by the darkside itself, over showing that he's a slave to his master. Its a living hell.

TFA was a great setup for Rian Johnson to give us a MASTERPIECE! He has so much to play with in terms of storylines, characterization and mythology.

JJ set Rian up with a BEAUTIFUL lob pass Now Rian is gonna hammer that shit down through the hoop for a GORGEOUS alley oop that will be Episode 8.

Not sure how someone that grew up with leia and han as his parents, and Luke as his mentor/teacher could be misguided. Kylo Ren was my least favorite part of the film. Except his opening scene, that was [frick]ing sick

Kylo Ren is a [frick]ing badass he killed his own father Han Solo!!!!!!!! can't wait to see more of Kylo Ren in Star Wars Episode 8!!
A Star Wars Antology Kylo Ren origin story would be way better than a Boba Fett movie.

Ren was supposed to be a spoiled brat... that's the whole point. Under the mask he's an intimating, cool, mysterious villain, but we then find out he's just a messed up, petulant child with daddy issues - and that ultimately makes him even more scary and unpredictable.

Idk what's weak about killing your damn dad. That's scary and [frick]ed up. He's scary in the immature and tormented way Anakin wasn't. Making up for the prequels horrible characterization.

I guess I was expecting a better villain than what Vader was and was expecting too much

I agree with @xombygod. Vader failed asset everything. I have no clue what Vader was trying to do. Unless there are stuff in those books which I'm never reading. The movies should make this clear which they didn't.

Kylo Ren was interesting until the mask was taken off then i didn't cared for the character. The untold story of his corruption to the darkside just feel flat for me. People need to take the blinders off for real.

@Nomis true true. I had more of a problem with the PALTRY performance and delivery of such an emotional scene. Driver plays tormented and conflicted better than Hayden Christensen. I thought he did cry while he was choking her, but maybe Im mistaken.

The villains in this movie fell flat and the way they revealed Kylo Ren was Han's son was terrible too.
