Now that Bryan Singer is no longer involved, excitement for the Red Sonja reboot is definitely increasing. Ant-Man and The Wasp star Hannah John-Kamen was recently cast as the title character, and it seems she could be joined by an A-List star based on a report from The Illuminerdi.
The site reveals that Millennium Studios has offered Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (yes, that's the actual title, and you can read our review here) star Sacha Baron Cohen the co-lead role of Kulan Gath. As is so often the case, we currently don't know whether he's accepted.
The character debuted in Marvel Comics' Conan the Barbarian run in the 1970s alongside Red Sonja, later appearing in stories alongside the X-Men. His powers include reality alteration and immortality, and the reboot would mark his live-action debut (he wasn't in the original movie).
We recently learned that Tasha Huo (the writer of Netflix's Tomb Raider anime series) has been tapped to pen Red Sonja's screenplay. alongside recently announced director Joey Soloway.
When the news about John-Kamen's casting broke, the latter said: "Hannah is a very talented actress who we’ve been following for years and she IS Red Sonja. Her range, sensibilities and strength are all qualities we have been looking for and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this journey together."
We'll keep you updated on whether Cohen ultimately says yes to his first comic book movie role...
