DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES Sequel Unlikely After Final Box Office Totals

A disappointing update for fans hoping to see a sequel to the recent Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves here, as the movie's final box office tally does not bode well for a follow-up...

Sometimes you can do everything right, and audiences still don't turn up.

Paramount Pictures and eOne's recent fantasy adaptation, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, received very positive reviews from critics (it's sitting at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, with an equally impressive 93% audience score), but despite a decent opening weekend and an A- CinemaScore, the movie simply failed to find its feet at the box office.

The final tally is now in, and Honor Among Thieves finished its theatrical run with a disappointing $93M domestic/$207M worldwide on a $150M budget.

Factoring in advertising costs, etc, and you have to believe the chances of a sequel being greenlit are somewhere between slim and none.

It would be a real shame if we didn't get to see these characters again, but a Paramount+ D&D spin-off series from Derek Kolstad (John Wick; The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) is still in development (as far as we know), so there's a possibility that something can be salvaged and the franchise will forge ahead.

"A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people," reads the official synopsis. "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves brings the rich world and playful spirit of the legendary roleplaying game to the big screen in a hilarious and action-packed adventure."

Game Night directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley helmed the project, and wrote the latest version of the script based on a previous draft by Michael Gilio.

Bet the director wish he didn’t make the statement about making the male protagonists idiots. Wish he just talked about how empowered everyone was.

@rockinsokinrobo - I'm sure most don't even know what you're referencing.

The truth is this genre isn't as big as it used to be. We're far from the times of Willow or Dragonslayer.

@CoHost - Neither of those were box office hits and their budgets were much lower. Hollywood needs to learn that every movie doesn’t need a $150 million budget. There are very few mid budget Hollywood productions these days.

@rockinsokinrobo - I didn't read that, but... what? The entire point of one of the male characters is that he was better, smarter, stronger, and braver than everyone else in the movie.

@rockinsokinrobo - doubt it since the general audience doesn't care or pay attention to director/producer/actor comments.

@mountainman - exactly; majority of these studios would be in better shape if they understood that. Seems only genre that understands that is horror, which is why their franchises tend to last forever.

@rockinsokinrobo - If you think that is the reason the movie bombed then you are delusional. DnD doesn’t appeal to the general audience. It doesn’t appeal to all nerd groups. It sucks but DnD games is still looked as ultra nerdy compared to Marvel and LotR. That is why it bombed. Bet most people don’t even know what you are even talking about.

@MarkCassidy - the headline from CBR, there are tweets about it amd the writers brag about it.

The Dungeons & Dragons Movie Intentionally Emasculates Its Leading Men

@CoHost - Actually DnD has had a resurgance during Covid. VTT's are a big part of the reason.

@rockinsokinrobo - Pine's Character wasn't an idiot though, he's a bard, did you watch the movie?, None of the male characters were idiots.

It's summer, go outside and enjoy life

Watched it on paramount plus. Was ok, glad I didn’t pay to see it in a theater.

I really liked it. Maybe not quite as good as critics raved, but just a purely entertaining adventure from start to finish. Pine was excellent.

@MarkCassidy - Exactly how I felt about it. I really enjoyed it overall though, and would welcome a sequel, although it doesn't seem necessary either. Not everything needs to be a whole connected universe or even a franchise.

@MarkCassidy - As I understand it, they are creating a series which leads on from the movie or is based in the same world. If the series is successful, then we may actually get another movie. Judging by how popular Critical Role and The Legend of Vox Machina are, I can actually see this working once the general audience are more aware of world D & D is set in.

@MarkCassidy - this was the first time i watched a Michelle Rodriguez film and didnt want to vomit, all in all it was a great D&D film. Adding the red wizards was a nice touch, with the popularity of D&D rising again i was hoping for a sequel that followed another group of adventurers

The general audience are marvel/disney sheep. They dont want to be left out of the conversation.

Imo paramount has great production values. Even the first avengers film was great because of their involvement.

Too bad for this movie

@vectorsigma - Explain why the John Wick films are so successful if the general audience are Marvel/Disney sheep? How did The Super Mario movie hit $1 Billion and it's a Universal movie. How did Creed III do well?
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 5/27/2023, 10:27 AM
@SonOfAGif - exceptions and a different class of people who didnt want to get left out. Also include the fast movies.

Ive always see all major movie releases and i can see the difference in crowd response between a marvel/disney film and other productions.

Exceptions can happen, a good example is mario. Who didnt want to see that even if it's not that good?
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 5/27/2023, 11:06 AM
@vectorsigma - But you are claiming that the crowd of Disney/Marvel are also not the same crowd that go out to see John Wick and Fast and Furious movies. You said "The general audience" as a whole.
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 5/27/2023, 12:18 PM
@SonOfAGif - i didnt say that, i agree with your point and i see those films as exceptions.

Maybe my bad using GA. But i still think a large portion of that rely on what is trending to see a movie on which disney/marvel always are no matter the quality.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 5/27/2023, 2:45 PM
@vectorsigma - If you break down the different films (despite the quality) I believe it's ultimately majority the same audience but subtract the audience under 17. Kids are a big contributing factor to why Disney + Marvel films do so well. Look at Super Mario and how well it did. Where as John Wick and Creed 3 were great success films for their studios and most of those audience members watch the Marvel movies as well. I think that WB as a whole has burned out the fanbase entirely between Harry Potter fans and DC fans.

Ha1frican

Not surprising, I didn’t watch it because I don’t know anything about the IP and the marketing made it look generic. I’d imagine that was the case for most people. Dungeons and Dragons is a recognizable name, but how much of the general audience have actually interacted with it to want to go out and see this? I’d have checked it out on streaming if it went to a bigger service I have but I’m not downloading paramount
Shivermetimbers
Shivermetimbers - 5/27/2023, 9:27 AM
@Ha1frican - I think you nailed it. If anything, many people probably have a negative opinion toward the D&D name, thinking its just a bunch of man-children playing in their mom's basement with their creepy friends (whether thats fair or not). Im sure that had something to do with the lack of success. Marketing definitely didn't do it justice either. It was a really fun movie to watch.

@SolarSoldier - Maybe because the topic of the article… is about people not seeing it? You commenters who lack critical thinking skills are so freaking weird.

I wouldn’t rule it out. Since the reviews were good and it didn’t completely bomb, I think the studio would try another. Now it’s a sequel, studios love sequels.
