THE LORD OF THE RINGS, COWBOY BEBOP, & POWER RANGERS Allowed To Resume Filming In New Zealand

In addition to James Cameron's Avatar sequel and Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog, New Zealand has granted five additional productions border exemptions to allow the resumption of filming.

With New Zealand having effectively curbed the spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the country has recently granted border exemptions to seven overseas productions to allow them to get back into the nearly shut down country to resume or begin filming.

The crew of James Cameron's Avatar sequel were among the first let back into the country last month to resume work, with 31 crew members already there and ten more soon set to join them. Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog has also already resumed production.

While those were previously known, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) has now revealed five additional productions that have been granted exemptions. They are as follows: Amazon's The Lord of the Rings prequel series, Hasbro's Power Rangers Dino Fury, Netflix's Cowboy Bebop, Sweet Tooth, and Greatest Beer Run Ever.

The crews of the aforementioned series will arrive within the next six months.

The Lord of the Rings had already been filming prior to the shutdown, so it will likely be able to pick up where it left off relatively quicker than the others. The new season of Power Rangers and Cowboy Bebop had not yet begun shooting, so they are expected to begin a little further out.

It's currently being forecasted that the production restarts could bring up to 3,000 new jobs to the country and possibly over $400 million in revenue as major studios look for alternatives with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic showing no signs of slowing down in the U.S.

@MUTO123 - With just a 14day self-imposed layover, you can ;)

@ChangAlang - Well, it's not that easy :-) I'm a Kiwi and at the moment only Kiwi citizens are allowed entry to the country. Even then, any arrivals are kept in quarantining facilities for 14 days before being allowed properly back into the country.

These exemptions they're talking about for the film crews are for non-Kiwi citizens but they will still need to do the 14 day quarantining before being let into the country proper.

As for the rest of us Kiwis, life has pretty much returned to normal. We do have a few cases but they are all in the quarantine facilities so it's not out in the wild so to speak.

I'm actually genuinely proud at how the general public all pulled together and worked as a team to flatten the curve. It also helps that we have a leader we all trust to get the job done.

@bcom - New Zealand is a shining beacon of how a country should be lead and how one properly responds to a pandemic...

@HeavyMetal4Life - We've done alright but honestly, it was a bit touch and go at the start. We had case numbers rising quite quickly at the start and our government were scrambling to find the best way to deal with it but the hard facts were that a total lockdown and border closure was needed to cull the virus.

I think like most countries we were stuck wondering just how much of a big deal we should make of it. Is it really dangerous enough to cause as much damage and death as they're saying? Can we keep operating as normal but try to manage it? But ultimately our kick ass Prime Minister decided to, as she said in her own words, "go hard and go early" and it really did work. Our whole country literally worked as a giant team to squash this thing and we had a great coach leading us through it. Being in NZ now you'd think it's just life as per normal, apart from older movies being shown in the cinemas :-) but we are still being very vigilant and the border is the main focus as that's the only way the virus can get back in.

One major benefit is that a lot of mega corporations are now looking at our little country as a potential "safe hub". Microsoft is being a multi-billion dollar data center here and multiple film studios are also looking at setting up studios here. Apple are also interested in setting up some sort of business hub here too.

We've dodged a bullet but we're not out of the woods just yet but personally, I can't wait for the rest of the world to get on top of it as well so we can all get together and collectively welcome each other back!

@bcom - Cheers mate. I’m Kiwi myself so I did realise the quarantine policies and various exemptions. @MUTO123 could be an actor ;)

Like you I’m very proud with how we’ve dealt with this and thankful there’s only been a few who thought they were above it all.

And I’m glad Clarke’s gone!
