New Details On Amazon's LORD OF THE RINGS Series Have Been Revealed; Release Date Eyed For 2021

With the end of Game of Thrones nearing, studios and production companies are already pulling out all the stops to find the next fantasy sensation. Amazon is putting all their resources into expanding Tolkien’s Middle-Earth legendarium, using a rumored billion dollar budget to fill its first season.
Recently, Amazon Studios’ head Jennifer Salke opened up on the development of the massive undertaking.

Speaking on the project’s release date, Salke stated that “It’ll be in production in two years,” further noting that “2021 is the hope, but there are other people who wish it was 2020.

Though the executive does not address the young Aragorn rumors, she does reassure fans by saying Amazon is not “remaking the movies … [or] starting from scratch.” It is worth pointing out that the latter portion of that statement may disappoint fans hoping for a wholly original take on the franchise. The anthology approach is likely off the cards as well, with the intent of making it “one big series.

On the bright side, fans will be encouraged to hear that production is once again planned to take place in New Zealand, where The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit franchises were previously filmed. As for the involvement of Peter Jackson, it seems it is ultimately up to him. “He may say he is involved or he’s not … We’re still very much in conversation.

I like Lord Of The Rings but the novels are over rated.
I like to read, but I couldn't even get through Fellowship of the Ring, there is so much needless filler, especially when they are in the Shire

@dracula - then you need to work on your attention span.

@Super12 - my attention span is fine, ive read whole book series, one book after the other, without loosing interest, but come on, there is so much you can cut out in those books, hell they run into that Tom Bombadil guy, they spend time with him, they leave, something happens, and they meet him again. What is the point of any of that.

@dracula - it's not needless filler, it's not pointless, and it's definitely not overrated. If you don't get what makes them the most beloved and important fantasy novels of all time, maybe you're missing something.

@Super12 - if I’m missing something then go ahead and tell me what was the point of those chapters

@dracula - you're looking at it too rigidly. Bombadil's character wasn't meant to be some structural or thematic plot point. There's more to what he represents (and what a good story should do) than just to be a plot device. He was a contradiction. A wonder in a world full of magic. In the midst of this dark, dramatic doomsday scenario here is this man that takes the most dangerous and powerful thing in existence, laughs at it, and promptly ignores it. He was a breathe of fresh air at a pretty perilous time, and showed a spirit of freedom connected to the land and to nature, that somehow overpowered the ring itself. He's an enigma, his origins aren't explained. He's just magic and wonder and innocence, something to make this fantasy world just a bit more fantastical.

The point of an adventure story isn't to be as efficient as possible and only give you the minimum information you need. It should draw you in to a world larger than life, leaving edges and corners yet to be explored. Tolkien does that, particularly well with Bombadil.

I was hoping they'd adapt The Silmarillion. There is so much history in that book but it hasn't been adapted yet.

@ScionStorm - Last I heard was that the Tolkien estate is holding on to rights to The Silmarillion, so that nobody can try to adapt it. After the Hobbit trilogy I can't say I blame them.

@Kyos - Christopher Tolkien retired his position as head of the estate and the estate is actually helping with this Amazon adaptation which so far as we know takes place -vaguely- before Lord of the Rings and is panned for 5 seasons.

@ScionStorm - I'll be damned. Thanks so much for the update!

@ExpertlyMediocr - That's because it's not really and singular story. It's a historical account spanning thousands of years and including the world's creation cosmology. Taken as a whole it is daunting. Taken in parts and not read as if expecting it to be a lone story like the other books, it can be a fantastic look into the world and history of Middle Earth to events characters might have only previously alluded to in passing.

It is expected that Kevin Tsujihara will remain as President of Warner Brothers Studio for the time being.

There's a pretty great independent film on youtube called "Born of Hope". If I remember right it shows Arathorn and young Aragorn as Rangers. There's definitely room in that 60 years between Hobbit and LOTR to expand on his story, but there's so many more places to go in Middle-earth, I really wish they'd go to the First or Second Age with a show this big.
