Variety report that Sonar Entertainment is partnering with Farah Films to produce a television show based on the 20 strong series of novels in Terry Brooks' Shannara saga, which has been running for the past 25 years. There has been one graphic novel also - The Dark Wraith Of Shannara, published back in 2008.

The story is set after the destruction of our civilization in the "great wars", with the world reverting to a medieval state and magic re-emerging. Many of the protagonists in the series are descended from the Eleven noble family of Shannara. Apparently the series will begin by adapting the second novel in the series, The Elfstones of Shannara.

Says Brooks..

"Partnering with Sonar Entertainment and Farah Films on adapting the 'Shannara' saga for television is an exciting prospect. Everything about both companies suggests the result will be one that both old and new fans of the books will readily embrace. I am committed to doing everything I can to help make this happen."

The series has been going on for what like 25 years now, so they have a wealth of material that they can use.

@grif I understand that your a staple of this website and your constant negativism towards everything is a trademark. But I think you might have finally lost it the Shannara saga written before Game of Thrones even [frick]ing existed, obviously due to popularity of the show this book is being developed for TV. But it is nothing like Game of Thrones, its more in the vain of LoTR. More fantasy and magic.

Hell it can be argued the first book in the trilogy is more than just "inspired" by LoTR. So I'm glad there going with the second book.

Excellent and enjoyable series of novels. I hope they do justice to them and not have it look like a cheap production, there is a lot going on in the Shannara series.

This is no doubt the best Fantasy series ever. I started reading them in 1997 in elementary school at the same time as I was reading Lord of the Rings and The Darksword Trilogy.

This series ruined the Lord of the Rings for me. It was SO much better, in every aspect, by such a larger margin. Dont get me wrong TLOR is amazing in its own right, but The Shannara series is just a different class of quality and depth. The Darksword Trilogy held its own as well.

The Shannara series is gigantic. A TV series and subsequent spin offs would be the only proper way to convey one of the largest stories ever told. Movies just would NOT be able to cut it. Not by a long shot.

While I love this series think Raymond Feist's 'Magician' or David Gemmel's 'Legend' or 'Waylander' books would be better adaptions - especially in light of the success of Game of Thrones.

If we are going to have the "Game of Thrones" rip-off convo we gotta talk about Tolkien influence...and before that Norse Mythology and Beowulf and stuff. So, let's just not go down that road, shall we?

Nobody in their right mind will call thsi a GOT rippof, but there is no doubt the reason it's coming to tv is due to the success of the GOT tv series..only a good thing, provided it's done right. Fantasy is very hard to adapt properly.

Good, because we need more sword and sorcery TV and not a GOT clone to inspire more GOT clones.

The books sell well in my store, I haven't been at work for over a year to see how well they're doing of late but because of this I'll be doing so when I get back in the next few weeks.

Funnily enough, when the first books came out they were criticised as a LotR rip-off. But they turned out to be reasonably popular in their own right and have stood the test of time, so far.

I read the first 5 or so and remember enjoying them, so will look forward to the series with interest.

@Grif: Oh I do hope so. There are a wealth of fantasy stories I'd love to see adapted, so I hope Game of Thrones success does indeed lead to many more.

I read the 1st book @13, I thought it borrowed a lot from Tolkien so I couldn't get into the series. I probably could give it another chance now.

Personal wish list:
Feist's Magician
Asprin's Thieves World
Asprin's Myth Adventures
de Camp & Pratt's Harold Shea series
Any/all of Moorcock's Eternal Champion series
Leiber's Fafhrd & Gray Mouser
Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant (rumoured to be up for a movie series, so will cross my fingers for that too)
Eddings' Belgariad

& many more that spring to mind now I'm thinking about it... there's no shortage of good fantasy fiction to draw on, old and new. But I'd like to see a few more of the 'classics' done justice on screen.

They should have done The Word and the Void series. Much better and more modern.

=rolls eyes= Shannara, seriously? Cthulhu, they're scraping the bottom of the barrel there. There are so many other better series they could have gone with.

Given a choice, I'd rather watch Doctor Who reruns...

I have read the series multiple times and am very excited to hear this news...as long as they do it right.

Shannara, The Belgariad and The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant are my favorite fantasy series, along with Tolkien's work.

This is exciting news. Hopefully, the show does the series justice... I've always wanted to see a live-action adaption of Alannon and the Ohmsford family. I look forward to hearing more.
