Ah the glory days. I remember a past not so long ago, when a DC Cinematic Universe seemed so very close, until the film guiding the universe flopped and sucked. Now we have a new film that is guiding a shared DC Universe, Man Of Steel. With Man Of Steel being a financial success it is inevitable that we will see a sequel within the following years. But enough about Superman, it’s Green Lantern’s time to shine. Green Lantern is one of the best superheroes ever, and his first on screen outing really didn’t do the character justice. But much like Superman ( Superman & The Mole Men), Batman (Batman: The Movie 60’s) & Spider-Man (The Amazing Spider-Man 70’s) their first films were not the best. So like Batman, Superman & Spider-Man I think Green Lantern deserves another shot, and here’s how to do it!

1. Hal Jordan

I’m probably going to get some massive hate here, but I like Hal Jordan and the general audience did to. Hal Jordan to me reminds me of Han Solo in the sense that he is the asshole who says an awesome one liner and then kicks your ass. That’s something 2011’s Green Lantern didn’t get right, but it really is an easy fix. The general audience does not care for any Green Lantern apart from Hal Jordan, and plus Parallax deserves a better on screen incarnation.

2. DC’s Star Wars

Green Lantern is practically DC’s Star Wars. It’s about a bunch of dudes who fly around space protecting it with green utilities. That’s the Jedi minus a green midget. This isn’t a bad thing, in fact I love Star Wars so why not use that idea to your advantage. The unique thing about all those Star based franchises is that they use space to their advantage and create a universe that can withstand anything.

3. Find A Tone And Stick With It

This might’ve been Green Lantern’s biggest fault. The film really didn’t have a consistent tone. Some scenes in the film were bright and vibrant while other scenes were dark and mysterious. With a consistent tone we can make all those problems disappear. I think a suitable tone for the new Green Lantern film would be that of the new Star Trek films. And I’m not saying this because I love Star Trek; I’m saying this because those films have the perfect tone for a Green Lantern film.

4. Imagination Damn It!

One of the unique and awesome things about Green Lantern’s magical ring is that he can create anything he wants with it. That’s the awesome thing about Green Lantern, you take that away and all you have is a bloke flying around in space undies. I was playing Injustice: Gods Among Us the other day and I realised how visually cool Green Lantern’s powers are. Green Lantern is a character that relies solely on imagination, that’s the point of the character. He can create anything his mind can imagine so to make a film you must use the imagination to the films advantage.

5. Don’t Recast Sinestro

I understand that I am writing about a Green Lantern reboot, but please Warner Bros’ don’t recast Sinestro. Mark Strong brought the character to life, one of the few fantastic things about Green Lantern was Mark Strong’s portrayal of Sinestro. Obviously I do not want Warner Bros’ to continue the series that was previously started, so Sinestro could maybe interact with Hal a little more in the reboot and maybe help Hal fight the enemy in the final battle. Unless Mark Strong receives the role of Lex Luthor in Man Of Steel 2 I expect Strong to return as Sinestro in the next Green Lantern film.

6. Less Earth, More Space

Space is a key essential element to Green Lantern’s character. He is the protector of the galaxy, having the final battle set in space and the rest of the film on Earth really doesn’t satisfy the inner fanboy in myself. If the space setting can work for Star Wars & Star Trek then why can’t it work for Green Lantern? I think the new Green Lantern movie will be similar to the first Star Trek film, we will have twenty-thirty minutes of Earth and build up and then we will move to space for the rest of the film.

7. Not To Big Of A Budget

One of the many problems with Green Lantern was the over use of CGI and the ridiculous budget spent on a completely new character. The 2011 film had one of the biggest budgets in the history of film, the film cost well over $200 Million dollars. Now up until 2012, no Batman film had a budget of more than $180 million dollars, for a character like Green Lantern to receive a budget of $200 million is ridiculous. With todays technology you can create anything for under $200 million, so don’t waste money on the film instead waste the money on the marketing. Now for those of you who do not believe a Green Lantern movie can be made with a budget under $200 Million; J.J Abrams's 2009 Star Trek film was made on a budget of $150 Million, while it's sequel was made on a budget of $190 Million. You don't need a budget of $200 Million+ for Green Lantern, it is illogical.

8. A Unique Story

Okay, I’ve had it with these bullshit stories in superhero movies. I don’t want to see another blue beam of light hit the sky in anymore of these superhero films. Now what makes a unique story? Good characters. The new Green Lantern film should focus on a character driven story instead of a story driving character. What I mean by this is that Hal Jordan should make the story great, not the story itself. If you get the audience to give a shit about Hal Jordan then anything is possible. Max Landis (Chronicle) said the other day that superhero films are forgetting the ‘hero’ side of it, well I say let’s bring that back with Green Lantern.

9. Fix The Damn Suit

Green Lantern’s costume is one of the greatest costumes in all of comic books; the suit is down right gorgeous. From the vibrant green look, to the iconic Lantern emblem, don’t fix what isn’t broken and Green Lantern’s comic book suit is not broken. One thing that Green Lantern got right was the way every Green Lantern had a different suit, I liked that. Do that again. But you can’t do that until the actual suit looks great. If The Avengers & The Amazing Spider-Man proved anything, it’s that comic book suits look fantastic on the big screen.

10. No Ryan Reynolds

It seems I always end these editorials with “No (insert actor name here)” but it needs to be addressed. As much as I loved Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, I feel DC/WB should not continue with Reynolds as Green Lantern. He did a great job as Hal Jordan but I think if Warner Bros’ want to establish a new universe tied into the Man Of Steel universe they must start from scratch. I will say it again, treat Green Lantern like Hulk or Superman Returns having failed films is okay, and fans will forgive you if you start fresh as long as that fresh start is decent. My personal pick for Hal Jordan would Kit Harington, who you would know from Game Of Thrones the dude is a fine actor and has the look of Hal Jordan down.

And that draws the close to another “10 Must Haves…” I hope you guys enjoyed this one, while I will be the first to admit it is not as good as my Batman one, I hope you guys still get a kick out of this one. Be sure to hit the thumbs up button down below so we can get this thing on main page! And as always you can follow me on Twitter, plus in the comment section tell me what “10 Must Haves…” you would like to see next! Comment below and let me know, I’m Khan and I’m out for now.

Great points. Agreed with everything. If they decide to go for a bigger name for Hal, I say get Chris Pine. He was practically already Hal in Star Trek. Harrington is a great choice though.

I personally think only comic fans like Green Lantern, especially Hal. The Green Lantern story needs to be readdressed for film, given some meaning, cause Hals is origin and everything kind of bores me. I think they should make it that John Stewart or the oriental guy. But John Stewart could be cool. A special op GI in the vietnam war. he´s picked by an alienship after escapìng a POW camp. Vietnamese soldiers are after him, then a ship arrives. Loads of GI´s see it and are thought crazy, turned mad by the war, but John is taken because of his will to be part of an intergalactic space police force. I think Hal should train him.

I agree with most of your point!
They should base the reboot on Secret Origins, cut Atrocitus. Dont use the diary perspective. Emphasis on Sinestro and Hals relationship. Bastardize the Guardians from blue little men to something more aweinspiring and alien. Also add some real foundation between Hal and Carol; Secret Origins. Weta Digital! The constructs needs to be less absurd, more realistic like beams et al. But the plane construct when Hal saves Sinestro neeeeds to be there!
No William Hand. Make the event happen one year before MoS, so Hal would not be on earth while this happen. Music needs to be more classical like Star Wars, less guitar. Tomar-Re and Kilowog needs to look even more alien. The suits needs to be perfect. I firmly believe the white gloves can be included, make the energy light them up basically. Fight scene at the bar with John Stewart. Jessicas death needs to be there too.
They need also to make the iconic passing the torch of Abin Sur more based on source material. Its one of the most well known scenes in comicbook mythology for a reason.
The scene where Sinestro says:Hal miserably attempts to fight Sinestro, with Sinestro waving away his constructs, saying they are "laced with anger. And although the Guardians believe fear creates cracks in our willpower- anger will distort [our willpower]. Anger will make it unfocused. [And a] Green Lantern needs to be focused." needs to be there, as it hints to different spectrums. Also the scene where Hal flies without his ring and crashes into Sinestro; the "yoda" scene as I call it, it is awesome and must be in it. And make Hal leave earth, as mentioned before: This would make his relationship with Carol more distant when he returns as well so you have tension.
Perhaps a hint to a dark crusader in Gotham or a scarlett speedster in Central city?
And while I enjoyed Mark Strong, a reboot needs to be complete.

Some of these seem counter-productive. You want a new series, new everything, but same sinestro? That will confuse audiences.

You want it to be DC's Star Wars, and yet have a lower than average budget?

I'm gonna say it here: I'm not in the boat that thought Green Lantern was terrible. It wasn't GOOD to be sure, but it wasn't bad either. It was affable, average.

If there's going to be any type of a reboot. Make it the same series. No Hal Jordan. Make it Kyle Rayner or (better yet) Idris Elba as John Stewart. Green Lantern is a good series for rebooting in that you can just pick a different Green Lantern to follow, rather than having to restart with the same character. It's wasteful to do that.

Just tell the story of Sinestro's downfall, but with a different lantern than Jordan.

Sorry but you lost this. IGN did an article about Green Lantern in the DCCU and fans has spoken:

IGN has one of the bigger comic book/video game/geek sites online and they spoke. IGN's audience is larger than this site.

The audience for JL: TAS was between 8-12. Those kids are now 20-24. The paying audience in films nowadays is 18-24 which means most of the target audience is familiar and grew up with John Stewart.

8 million comic book total counting all the companies are sold a month nowadays in a world of 8 billion.

Fact is before the Green Lantern film, John had millions of fans while Hal had hundreds of thousands.

nice article Khan

and let's be real. Hal Jordan is the protagonist of DC's main GL title in the comics and he has been for years. It's just not realistic that they'd put a secondary character like John Stewart in a movie at this point.

But out of all the Green Lanterns, Hal and John are the best 2 to use in film. Those are the 2 the GA knows and loves.

I agree with all points for the most part. I don't care if it's John Stewart or Hal Jordan, just make the character interesting. I had an idea to update Stewart instead of him being Hal Jordan's successor more-less (that's how I always took it as) make him the first Green Lantern and have him be a war vet in the middle of war but at the camp site when he gets the ring. I don't mind a Sinestro recast but, it'll be hard for someone to be as good in the role as Mark Strong. Also, not all comicbook suits look good on the big screen. Some of the would've looked pretty shitty *cough* Wolverine.

On the topic of Justice League though, I don't care if they use Martian Manhunter or Cyborg. Martian Manhunter is pretty much Superman as I understand it but would bring an interesting premise to the debut Justice League movie and has a "different" weakness while Cyborg would add further diversity if they don't go with John Stewart for Green Lantern. Btw, Justice League show and most superhero cartoons. Shit! I've only liked Batman TAS, Spider-Man TAS, X-Men, X-Men Evolution and The Spectacular Spider-Man.

Love the article, Khan!

But, seriously. When they make the reboot (it's inevitable), they should just make it THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS instead of having just Hal. Yes, you could focus more on Hal, but you also need to focus on John, Kyle, Guy, Kilowog, Salaak, etc.

That's what the first movie lacked a lot. Hardly showed corps. I WANT TO SEE THE CORPS!
EdgyOutsider
EdgyOutsider - 7/2/2013, 8:41 AM
@MAC: As always with this sort of thing, take them with a grain of salt. As far as Green Lantern goes, I would like to see more of the Corps but I don't want Hal with John with Kyle, so on and so on. You know where I'm getting at there. If they go with Hal, take a more Incredible Hulk approach but with the obvious differences. If they go with John Stewart, ignore Hal cause that wasn't part of this new shared universe. Forget he existed. You see where I'm trying to get at?

Everyone knows I am the biggest contender for a sequel to Green Lantern. I loved Reynolds. I loved Strong. Hell I actually didn't mind some of the Parralax battles.

However, as much as I hate to admit it, maybe a reboot is the way to go. I only say that, however, because I also want Reynolds as Deadpool before Fox scraps the whole project.

I actually am going to be posting an article I finished last week about 10 things Justice League needs, hope you check it out Kahn I think you would like it.

Jon Stewart is more popular to general audience since WB/DC made the mistake to use Jon for race reason instead of Hal in the JL animated series. Ask anyone who watches comic book related stuff and dont read comics and 9 out of 10 you gonna get Jon for GL over Hal.

People please stop thinking the GA is so stupid that they cant follow a simple reboot if they use the same actor. They follow and get just as much about news on movies as we do. Not alot of GA watched the first one anyway so they have no reason to get confused in the first place.

I would love to use Hal over Jon for the simple fact of Hal and Sinestro relationship. If a writer can build that relationship up and display the right way to make them believable friends after a rough start, it would make Sinestro eventual downfall to the darkside hit the right emotions.

I just think Secret Origin hit all those right spots in the story so perfectly with his family problems, his start up friendship with Sinestro, and the revelations of his anger towards his dad friend was all for the wrong reasons while still showing the starting foundations of the GL corps and sci fi stuff at the same time.

@Levitikuz - whats happening man? Once again we agree. The fact is Hal jordan ain´t all that great a character. I´m sorry guys he isn´t Hans Solo. That magic can´t be caught again and to be honest I´m a bit fed up with full of themselves wise cracking asshole superheroes. jon provides a different direction that could focus on will more, him being a badass soldier. Besides who cares about reboot GL anyway. I say stick to the interesting characters, The Flash, Shazaam, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter. They have meaty stories you can do a lot with. And characters that are made up of more than silly one-liners. The Flash is just a billion times cooler and worthier of a movie than GL. As Lev said comic audiences respond to different things than GA. WB needs to stop using comic sales to justify making films. thats 8 million people out off 7.5 billion, invariably drooling over Geoff John hardon for some lame character he decided to give a few witty lines cause he knew comic nerds think thats oh so cool when they´re 14. Turns out it gets quite boring by the time we grow up and have seen it a billon times. The same tired tried and tested formula. Something new please Iron Man and Hans Solo already exist.

Where do you get your "facts" that the general audience only cares about Hal Jordan? Most of the general audience doesn't even know who GL is. Then there are millions of us out there that grew up on the DC animated universe, especially Justice League, and John Stewart is our lantern.

I couldn't give any less of a shit about Hal Jordan. Give me John Stewart and Kyle Raynor all day.

He needs to redeem himself in the CBM and Comic Book community. Let's face it he has had a LOT of bad CBMs. Buti f they Cast Jensen Ackles as Hal, I'd be cool about it...

Why reboot a movie from two years ago? Start fresh and introduce Jon Stewart in a "JLA" movie.

Trying to make another franchise before you anchor the third of the main three is just futile.
