EDITORIAL: Why A Green Lantern Sequel Deserves A Chance

I recently sat down to watch Green Lantern on Blu-ray, having only caught it the one time at the flicks. Despite still hating quite a few elements, I do see some redeeming features that could be expanded upon for a sequel...

Martin Campbell's Green Lantern isn't very popular here on CBM. I mean it's not very popular in many places because it's simply not a very good movie, but here I think we all felt that sting of disappointment a little more. We really wanted to see DC launch another great franchise that didn't have the words "Bat" or "Super" in it. I remember reading the first batch of 2 and even 1 star reviews prior to seeing it for myself and really hoping that they were wrong. When I did see it, I thought they were. For about the first 40-45 minutes I really enjoyed Green Lantern. I mean it wasn't particularly great, but I remember thinking that the reviews were very harsh and if it maintained the level of quality we would have an entertaining enough but underwhelming movie on our hands akin to Marvel's Iron Man 2. But it didn't maintain that quality. At all.

Re-watching the movie recently I stick to my guns that it does do a few things right. Despite a few off moments the first half does a pretty good job of maintaining the tone with patches of humor (some funny, some not), action and reasonably effective drama. The special effects are pretty good, Oa looks great, Ryan Reynolds is fine as Hal Jordan and Mark Strong makes an awesome, if underused, Sinestro. And overall the movie is actually a pretty faithful adaptation of the origin story. We are on out way to a solid enough first outing for ol GL. Then the roof caves in. Sometime after Jordan returns to Earth the movie seems to be hijacked by someone intent on making us hate the [frick]ing thing. And they succeed. Woeful attempts at comedy and romance, Blake Lively being even worse than she was in the first half (if that's possible), one bizarre, screeching villain and another that's basically a head in a fart cloud. Even the editing and camera work seems to take a dip in quality. It's very strange, but practically everyone I shared the cinema with as we watched the movie seemed to feel the same. I could see people looking at the person beside them, some laughing out load. Others left. I'm not exaggerating.

So WB/DC, you [frick]ed up. There are no two ways about it. But was it such a monumental [frick] up that you don't deserve a chance to put things right? We recently heard from Geoff Johns among others speak about plans for a sequel. Honestly, I'm for it IF a conscious effort is made to look at that first movie and find out what..or who, went wrong. We know Martin Campbell is at the very least a competent director so was it studio pressure to dumb down the story? Insistence on more "humor"? Or was the script always just lacking in the final act with no attempt to salvage it made? I haven't watched any of the special features on the Blu-ray yet but I hear from those that have that there is a definite impression of too many cooks on the movie. I didn't HATE Green Lantern and I do think it gets a bit too much stick. I believe that a sequel could work and I also wouldn't mind seeing Ryan Reynolds back in the title role. If WB and DC go ahead with this then it can't just be a case of flinging more money at it, or upping the action/set piece quota etc. Look at your audience, find out what they really want to see in a Green Lantern movie and not what you THINK they want to see. And this isn't a case of not being able to please the fanboys either because even regular movie goers weren't impressed with the film. Don't be lazy just because you think we are. Yes some will be fobbed off by silly jokes, bright colors and explosions but the majority won't be and Green Lantern's BO should prove that to you. (I realize that argument is in jeopardy looking at how much cash the Transformers movies make but one step at a time eh?)

That's my take, but what about you guys? Will you give Green Lantern 2 a chance? And if so what would you like to see done differently?

I'll possibly give it a chance as long as they have a good script and a director who knows what he's doing. I somewhat enjoyed the film. I just hated the casting of Reynolds and Lively. Also, how Hal defeated was stupid because some the Green Lanterns would of thought of it before.

recast lively
decent director
decent writer
set more in space than on earth
get a decent cgi effects i.e ILM or weta

then i'll give it a go,but it would be a hard sell trying to get the general public to go & see it after the first film didn't really deliver its full potential.

I would definitly go see a sequel! Anything, that has faults, can be improved.

@MrBlueSky: Why would other, more experienced Lanterns have thought of that before? There used to always stopping everything with their rings, then all of a sudden an alien comes along that they are unable to directly fight. They try but they get defeated. The new recruit, Hal, comes in with prior knowledge and doesn't try a direct approach. Besides, the way Parallax was defeated was a nod to the comics. That's why it happened the way it did.

Definitely not a great one by any means. I thought the acting was good, story definitely rushed and the GL core was under-used, especially Sinestro/Strong. I thought the flying sequences were pretty good. I know, I'm grasping here....

Put the ending of Sinestro getting the yellow ring during the middle of the sequel so we can explore the Hal and Sinestro relationship. More OA. Better director, and please get some different writers. The less the better. Green Lantern deserved more. It should've been among the greatest and most innovating superhero movies of all time but... Yeah.

Keep Reynolds, Strong, maybe Lively too. JJ Abrams could make it work probably. Or maybe move over to Wonder Woman and then reintroduce him with Flash in a JLA movie. But I want to get a sequel.

They need a better writer and a director that does good SciFi action/drama films. Riddley Scott, or the Wachowski brothers come to mind right now (yeah, I would give them a shot at it). If they want to do it cheap i would keep a lot of the CG models that was used in the first film again. That way you won't have to spend a lot of money doing it over.

I still dont know why GL is getting sooo much hate from everyone?? Ok..it wasnt a good movie, but neither was spiderman 3 and iron man 2 and i know i will get crucified saying this here..but neither was Thor. Gl was an ok fun saturday afternoon type of movie. As cbm fans we should be excited that they are willing to work on it and give it another chance, not sit on computers and act liek we could have done a [frick]ing better job if we had the chance. =)

Yeah, the movie failed. They relied too heavily on CGI work, which is understandable given the subject matter. But there have been "Space movies" that have been successful with out relying so much on CGI. I think if they were to bring Sinestro in as the main villain in the next film and take a step back and re-evaluate things a bit, they could have a decent film. So many other sub-par CBM's have received sequels, why not GL?

@MrBlueSky and golden123, the way I understood the film, only 4 lanterns had faced Parallax and were killed. The only lantern that had defeated Parallax was Abin Sur, and he was surprised attacked leading to a fatal wounding. Parallax allowed himself to be defeated by Jordan by following him instead of continuing to destroy the Earth once Jordan fled. I call that blind vengeance and stupidity since he actually had the upper hand and abandoned it just to destroy a Green Lantern.

i would like a requal, a reboot sequal but with the same cast, this time just have em as gl, and training through out space, tone into a darker movie like d,k,and take out that stupid ryan renolds humor and have em act his ass offfff, more sinestro more traning good villian like the black hand

I agree that the train started to come off the rails in the second half but at the end of the day it wasn't as bad as some make it out to be.

-Get rid of the race car track and add something better. It was ok but not the greatest idea in the

-Keep Krona separate from "Parallax" and the story the same that he was a former Guardian who chose to prove the rest of the Guardians wrong with fear as his weapon of choice. Change his look from the fart cloud to a Guardian on steroids (not in bulging muscles but just a bigger version of the guardians) so he is someone the GL's could go toe to toe with.

-Stop Hal from being a wishy washy cry baby who keeps quitting the corp.

-Instead of quitting his training, perhaps Sinestro asks Hal to join him to help some others defeat Krona on some random planet. Hal starts the journey with them but gets alerted by his ring that Carol is in danger from Hector (move that hangar scene up to this section to get big head off the screen) so he leaves the group to deal with that, which pisses off Sinestro.

-Hal deals with Hector and traps him in some type of holding facility on OA (instead of him getting killed)

-Meanwhile Sinestro gets his ass handed to him by Krona (This is a better reason why he wants a yellow ring made, because he is furious to be beaten and that the yellow color could be stronger than what he possesses)

-Krona can still turn into the fart cloud right before he is about to take over a planet but then reverts back to normal mode when he moves on.

-From the group of GLs that go to take on Krona, Hal gets back there just in time to help Kilowog, Toma Re and Sinestro escape as the planet is about to be decimated to regroup and fight another day.

-Same scene with Sinestro in front of the guardians pleading to make a yellow ring and Hal saying not to that they can all take him down if they join together.

-Hal and Krona (normal mode Krona) battle it out and it looks like Hal almost has the upper hand when Krona turns into the fart cloud to regain the lead in the fight and the rest of the movie plays out as it did with Hal luring him off the planet and into the sun.

Sandman101, it's that attitude that keeps them churning out these "fun Saturday afternoon type movies". If I want to see one of them I'll turn on my tv and watch a movie in the god damn afternoon..maybe I'll catch Paul Blart or something! Have. Higher. EXPECTATIONS!

I think it does. A good comparison or example is "House of a Thousand Corpses" and "The Devil's Rejects". The first movie was too over the top and lost something along the way. The second was a classic and was much better becasue it stepped back and told a story. that's my opinion anyway. Green Lantern II: Sinestro Corps should get a chance.

I personally liked the 1st GL, It wasn't great, but it wasn't as bad as you all made it out to be... I actually let the negative reviews keep me from watching it when it came out in theaters. I just saw it for the first time last week. My problems with it, were they tried to fit too much in. They could have split this up a bit and made two films with more balls.

Just saw GL for the first time on Saturday. I had heard so many terrible things about it, I expected it to be like Ghost Rider or Daredevil. I really enjoyed it. I think a sequel with Sinestro as the bad guy would be everything we had hoped for from the original.

I bought the regular dvd after watching it once with my sister. We're the type who will go see a movie that is universally panned by critics because we believe there is something to be gained, especially when they seem united against a movie that actually doesn't look too bad.

We came out wanting, yes, but we pretty much agreed that the critics were way too hard on it, that it is a worthy attempt that simply lost its brain.
What I liked:
- Effects
--- From the awesome constructs to Oa, I feel they succeeded visually in bringing these anticipated parts of the GL universe to life. I liked that the constucts didn't have a tether to them, as this is really only done in the comics to show that they are constructs AND who is creating them.

- Sinestro
--IMO, the movie would have been fantastic if Mark Strong was the lead, and it focused on Sinestro taking it upon himself to train Hal. He's a great actor who to me, gives off the most emotion and inflection throughout the movie. He was perfect.

What I didn't like:
- Shallow thinking
--- Carl Ferris has his best pilots Carol and Hal fly against his robot planes, in an attempt to prove that they are far more intelligent and undefeated. This is similar to having to prove to your boss that you are sick by not being able to catch a ball. When Hal takes his job seriously, as they note, Carl wants to fire him.
--- Parallax, the mysterious entity that is so powerful the Guardians are literally at a loss for countermeasures... is imprisoned by Abin Sur. Abin Sur, supposedly the greatest GL in the Corps, seals Parallax away under a rock formation in "The Lost Sector". A trio of anonymous alien explorers find him and he breaks out immediately.
--- Cool as it is, what motivation does Sinestro have to put on the yellow ring? He seemed like a smart guy up till then...
--- Hector Hammond doesn't have a secret lair. He goes back to his house or apartment after each and every encounter, and considering that his dad works with Ferris, I'd say it wouldn't be too hard to find out where he lives. After he melds with Hal and Parallax discovers Hal's existence, Hammond is the one who forces the next encounter. Will Hal just think about it tomorrow for tomorrow is another day?
--- At the party, Carol almost apologizes to Hector because "it must have been hard growing up with your father".... what? This confused me both times. Why would she do that?

It does deserve a second chance. Ryan Reynolds COULD make it work if he tried hard enough... there were some moments where he nailed Hal, and others where he just goofed. I think it should be up to Geoff Johns, however. He resurrected Green Lantern, made him interesting again, and as over-rated as he is, his work definitely sells. Put him in charge of the script.

@eksmanfan, quiet as it's kept, some of the best SciFy films made in the last ten years used a lot of and relied heavily on CGI (the last 3 Star Wars films and "Avatar" being examples). I think that one of the downfalls of the film was that there wasn't a good enough blend of action, adventure, and drama (i.e. not a strong enough storyline), which was what a lot of folks were anticipating. Not seeing that lead to disappointment. You also had poor brand awareness working against it.

I didn't actually mind GL, it wasn't a bad movie yet it wasn't "good" if you get my meaning. All the scenes in Oa and Parallax's introduction were cool but as soon we got the Galactus-esque Eldritch Abomination he seemed less threatening. Reynolds did ok and the guy that played Hammond (whose name escapes me) was fantastic. With a more galactic story and a stronger plot I really hope the GL becomes as well known as Batman and Hulk
