GREEN LANTERN Storyboards: Alternate Abin Sur Fight Scene; Tomar-Re Makeup Test (Video)

Hit the jump to check out storyboards that were created for Martin Campbell's Green Lantern, that feature a much more interesting battle between Abin Sur and Parallax. Also, come see a video showcasing an unused Tomar-Re concept, by Quantum Creation FX.

Back in August, I showed you images that Quantum Creation FX posted of their in-house Green Lantern makeup tests for Tomar-Re (voiced by Geoffrey Rush). Now, check out a video that features that practical concept moving around. Better than the CGI Tomar-Re?

Also, we have some storyboards, created by Michael Anthony Jackson, for Martin Campbell's Green Lantern. They feature Abin Sur's fight scene with Parallax, however this version is much more action-packed than the theatrical version. Keep in mind, the storyboards refer to Parallax as Hannu, which was probably just a codename. You'll also notice that Parallax is depicted as having a humanoid form, and not the cloud like stupidity we all know and hate. Once again, keep in mind these boards are probably from an early version of the script.

In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, an elite force of protectors for peace and justice has existed for centuries. They are the Green Lantern Corps. When a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of the Corps' newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds). Bringing the popular superhero to the big screen for the first time, Green Lantern also stars Blake Lively (Gossip Girl), Peter Sarsgaard (Orphan), Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes), Academy Award® nominee Angela Bassett* and Academy Award® winner Tim Robbins**.

GREEN LANTERN was directed by Martin Campbell, from a script written by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, Michael J. Green, and Michael Goldenberg. The film starred: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Tim Robbins, Taika Waititi, Temuera Morrison, and Angela Bassett.

I actually really like that Tomar-Re but it kinda creeps me out. Lol I wanna see if they did one for Kilowog too.

And it would've been cool to see Parallax look like that but I don't see how he could consume planets at that size.

Oh how different the comic book movie industry would be had GL been a hit. GotG would be more hyped, The DCU would have been more impressive, and 2014 would have probably been almost as awesome as 2015 will be.

I don't understand why people hate the Green Lantern movie so much, yes it did get some of the mythology wrong but isn't that a standard for many comic book adaptations. There are many good things I can say about the film, it had good heart and characterization. It perfectly defined who Hal Jordan was and his struggles till the end of the film. Ryan Reynolds did a good job portraying him in a near perfect performance compared to Hal Jordan in the comics. Great side characters especially Mark Strong who did a wonderful job as Sinestro. The film was a test as he was put in this task of defending Earth, he was only learning as evident throughout the film to become the Green Lantern. Wonderful costumes they looked great. I totally dug the redesign it gave it a more alienated appearance. Oa looked more real than ever. Wonderful direction by Martin Campbell. An amazing script which suited the tone of the characters in comparison to the comics yet again. I think everybody forgot the point of what Green Lantern was and this film nailed it. Years later and I still don't understand the hatred. It was a fun superhero action flick and I take it for what it is.

Should I also dare say it, but Green Lantern is in fact on of the best superhero films of our time. WB made Hal Jordon the Tony Stark/Iron Man of The DC Universe which is what they were tying to accomplish which I say is a bold move and it worked. Accept many fans as such wasn't willing to accept the difference. You really saw a similiar side through Ryan Reynolds portrayal as Hal Jordon. You really saw deep within the self destructive side of himself till his redemption at the end managing to defeat Parallax finding his courage and will power. There were some unneeded inclusions in the film but it never distracted from the main plot at all. Everyone is just overreacting over this film when I bet half of you haven't seen it at all. It's a great experience and admittedly the material within the Green Lantern comics had some challenging aspects. What they did was simplified those aspects in a matter so the general audience could understand. It's not an absolute masterpiece but when you look at it in terms of character development which is one of the film's strongest points. Every character was developed in a way and manner. Every character seen progressed with the story and plot. It felt genuine and had a nostalgic feel in some scenes mainly in the ending battle. It's a decent fun and exciting movie. It could have been better in many peoples eyes but it could have been worse. It had humor similar to the film Iron Man as both in tone felt treading on familiar grounds. It's a good movie there is just no denying that. The only points you people are making is it's just terrible without giving any actual descriptive thought why which is not fair at all. I am describing in detail on how the elements of this film is good at least give back a good banter against mine or consider to be invalid.

There were alot of bad Cg in the film but Tomar-Re was not one of them. He was one of the best looking CG characters in any movie. Would have prefer the practical one to save money for other things but the CG Tomar-Re was perfect too. Can't say the same for Kilowog.

The three biggest problems with the GL movie were:
A) Parallex was too big/major of a villain for an origin story. Should've saved him for a sequel.
B) The film didn't spend enough time on Oa. It's literally like 25 minutes of the film.
C) The pace of the film was terrible. I could write an entire article on this topic alone.

Story was not that bad. They should not have had Parallax in the first film and I would have preferred another villain then Hector Hammond but I think he would have worked better if had the design of the character had not look like crap and the Director had pushed for better acting from Sarsgaard, actually from all the actors. Also the score was cheesy and atrocious again the Director has final say on that as well.

6of13 - 10/3/2013, 2:18 PM
There was barely any exposition for Hector Hammond.

I actually would like to see a sequel because there is so much potential for another film even though the first was disappointing. It's very doubtful now, but if there was some hope of a sequel I would like to see Despero as villain and a civil war on Kalanor.

You know, having a CG Tomar-Re is actually better than make-up. This way they have more freedom with his face. Although, when doing CG, better go with mo-cap altogether. This way the actor, and Rush is fantastic, could've made the character so much more. And his face a lot more detailed of course.

There are many things wrong with Green Lantern (2011) but a film done well (on every aspect) about the superhero and his rich universe could be so fantastic!

Besides the most important things of having a well written script that's character and story driven with not to forget a talented cast, a good director and a good DOP with someone who knows how to edit and such, are getting the visual aspect of the movie right on every level.
WB should hire VFX companies such as WETA, ILM, Double Negative, MPC and so on. And if it was up to me, a lot of WETA! Do characters as Thaal, Abin-Sur and such with make-up but the likes of Kilowog, Tomar-Re, Larfleeze and maybe even Atrocitus with mo-cap. And shoot as much as possible on real locations. Not to forget to shoot it on 35mm with maybe IMAX camera's to take the spectacle to a higher level.
Or, when going digital: the CineAlta f65 or the REDepic. Shooting it in a very high resolution but also render it in that format. Yes that's pricey and yes even with shooting on film, they should take a lot of time for the VFX!!! I would even like them to shoot it in HFR, could be great.

So bring on the Superman/Batman movie first, and then a JLA film! Hopefully, Green Lantern will be done justice then.
