I finally watched 2011's Green Lantern. Are the reviews right or wrong? (Like i'm gonna change your minds on a movie a year afterward).

I didn’t grow up a huge fan of Green Lantern. I liked Batman and Superman but never was introduced to Green Lantern until the Justice League animated series. Green Lantern became one of my favorite members outside of the big two on the show. When I heard that Green Lantern was going to get the big screen treatment I was excited. I never went to see it in the theaters due to poor reviews I heard about the films. Because of the recent passing of the late, great Michael Clarke Duncan, who voiced Kilowog, I decided to go on HBO on Demand and watch 2011, Green Lantern. This is my review of what I saw.

First off from the beginning and more so throughout the movie I noticed, the CGI looked terrible. For a hero would basically requires CGI you would think they would have some good CGI for GL. The film starts off with a brief history about the main villain, Parallax. Of course the villain who has been imprisoned for many years is brought back to live because of scientists doing something on the planet. We then see our hero Hal Jordan (played by Ryan Reynolds) who seems like an irresponsibility fighter pilot who gets a Green Lantern power ring from a dying Lantern and becomes the hero. I didn’t really want to give up most of the story because chances are you have seen the film.

This film had some good scenes I liked. I liked the scene where Abin Sur gives Hal the ring. I also laughed at the scene where Hal is trying to figure out how to power the ring into the lantern by saying the Oath. “To infinity and beyond?” Most of the scenes I liked took place on Oa. I liked when Hal first met Tomar-Re, whose voice was perfect thanks to Geoffrey Rush. My favorite scene in the movie is without a doubt when he first meets Kilowog. Kilowog was my favorite lantern and was voiced great by MCD. I also loved the scene where Hal and Sinestro are training.

There are so many, many things I disliked. I already mentioned my disliked in the CGI. Now story. I feel that the cast was good. I enjoyed all of their performance by the script just sucked. It was so bad. I disliked Hector Hammond as the villain. He didn’t feel like a movie villain. He was just a kid with dad issues and disliked Hal because Hal was the cool kid. I disliked how he became evil. Getting a piece of Parallax on you? The government would most likely just your body to make sure you don’t steal anything because after all he was the first human to do an autopsy. I didn’t like Parallax either. His role was really no different to Galactus in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. I also disliked Sinestro’s so called plan. Sinestro thinking it’s a good idea taking his best fighters to fight this threat? It was a stupid ass plan. It really could have been cut off. I wished that we saw more of a Bruce Wayne-Ducard relationship from Hal and Sinestro. We didn’t see any mentor-learner relationship from them. One thing I disliked also was Sinestro at the end putting the yellow ring on. I understand he does it in the comics but it didn’t feel necessary. You won, why put on the yellow ring?

I could go on and on about how much this movie sucked. Does it deserve a sequel? Well Ghost Rider got one. I feel that a sequel would be good. You can easily fix some of the problems that were bad. You would also have Sinestro as a villain, which would be cool. I liked Ryan as Hal. I felt he did good but overall the movie sucked. If this is the Green Lantern in the justice League movie is suggest you do a sequel first to fix Green Lantern so people will be excited and like him.

I give this movie a 2 out of 5

When i first saw the film i just blamed Ryan Reynolds but the script must take some blame as it was awful on this one. The villain was a flying head. There was nothing about how becoming a lantern with all these powers changed his life (if you are doing a back story you need to have this) nothing emotionally intelligent about this film. A green lantern film with all his powers and his space adventures and the emotions involved with using his power, should have been truly epic.

The one good point was Sinestro, you could tell that he was a bad ass and the few moments he had on screen got me excited. I would only want a sequel because of him.

A lot of good points here.

I just can't believe that Geoff Johns was happy with the movie's story and script, it has so much at odds with what GL is about.

Ok, so you hate the CGI, then why have a "terrible" CGI logo for your avatar? Personally, if I hated an aspect of a movie, I wouldn't take that on to represent myself on a website. Credibility???

So, to address the review and the responses, all by those influenced by Marvel fan hate and general bad will against this movie since literally over 7 months before it even HIT THEATERS!

1. CGI: It was probably the best of any movie I've ever seen, especially Kilowog and Tomar Re. The concept of the cgi body suit costume/human head has never been attempted, so the first try was an epic win...which I'm sure will be improved upon even more. And another credibility issue, so you hated the CGI, and loved all the fully CGI scenes (Oa).

2. Script: Sure, it wasn't Christopher Nolan, but it was at least as good or better than Snore, I mean Thor and Naptain, I mean Captain America as a BASIC ORIGIN story. Heck, if you take this very script, tweak a few parts to add about 30-45 more minutes of material for depth, maybe tweak the lines or directing of the Hal/Carol scenes (especially the final scene where he's flying off to his death to make it more dramatic, and it WOULD be on par with Nolan, Whedon, Puzo, etc.

3. Hector: He was only a conduit for Parallax, and the script showed his progression brilliantly. By the time he killed his father, he definitely showed that he had completely lost his mind, was pretty freakin scary and mad and even rivaled GL in power. He wasn't a villain before Parallax infection, but he had all the personality characteristics to be manipulated and was a perfect puppet for Parallax. Sure, Mongul, Arkillo, Hank Henshaw, etc would have been more straight up evil, but Hammond was a good introductory villain. You want to work up to the BIG bads, not start off with them.

3. Parallax: Yeah, it was kinda lazy to cloud parallax up, but the skeleton like fear sucking tentacles and the Krona head with the evil teeth/eyes was pretty freakin menacing. I kind of see the point of the 911 reference to the billowing smoke through buildings, and its symbolic reference to fear "terrorism", but it could have been more refined and detailed. Overall, I still liked Parallax though. I probably would have liked a giant cockroach ala comic version much less. Also, to those who say he was too much for an origin story, well technically, Parallax isn't even dead, just that incarnation. What happens when someone else gets infected? Maybe say...Hal???

3. Hal/Sinestro: I agree the Hal/Sinestro relationship could have used more development, but this movie really focused on Hal and his inner struggles with losing his father and dealing with self doubt and other emotions. I could see the attitude change in Sinestro's eyes when Hal basically flew off to die fightng Parallax. I think this could lead them to a friendship>>>betrayal in the sequel. Ducard didn't have contempt and a total lack of respect for Wayne like Sinestro did for Jordan 99% of the movie. Jordan earned that respect, now it's time to build on that.

4. Yellow Ring: He put the ring on to show that he wants that power, and the writers did it to tease the awesome uniform. IF we get lucky enough for a sequel, I hope they start off with him using the yellow ring on the DL while still being a GL.

5. Sinestro's taking squadron of lanterns vs. Parallax:
Well, a Green Lantern technically has almost unlimited power. Theoretically, he could go toe to toe with Superman and Thor (probably eventally be overpowered though). So 10-15 GLs should technically be able to take down Parallax. He just underestimated Parallax's ability to draw fear out. I would have liked to see this scene extended. Maybe like 50 Green Lanterns fighting, and showing what Parallax was doing psychologically to the few he killed and/or paralyzed with fear. (maybe showing Kilowog having to overcome Parallax showing him his family/planet dying. Maybe to G'Hu, he showed the corps all dying as a result of G'Hu's inability to live up to the duty of a lantern. Maybe he showed Boodika's sister betraying her and killing her parents, who knows. I don't hate the scene, but just wish I could have seen more.

6. tonytony, Hal's loss of his father changed his life, the ring just woke him up and gave him some direction when all he was living for was himself prior. The movie showed this clearly, and you don't get more emotionally intelligent than seeing your father blow up in your face at 12 yo, and all the emotional/family baggage that that entails. The GL responsibility, ancient beginnings, and roots in emotion were also touched on, though I do wish willpower itself would have been emphasized more. I think it's so much more heroic than Batman's use of fear, and more human than Superman/Captain America's "ultimate boyscout" personas.

7. I do give the reviewer credit for recognizing the great acting, and awesome moments in many scenes. Not that I wouldn't have liked to see a MORE epic GL movie, especially a longer one, but this movie was BY FAR better than most give it credit for. It was a basic introduction to get Hal the ring (epic scene), and get him into the swing of things. It stayed remarkably true to the comics on most everything, and is definitely my favorite CBM, with Avengers/Superman II/Dark Knight trilogy tied for second.
