Yet Another Mixed/Negative Review For Green Lantern

Yet Another Mixed/Negative Review For Green Lantern

Cinema Blend just posted their review on the Martin Campbell-directed film, and once again it's not looking very bright (no pun intended)...

It appears that Green Lantern is becoming a complete bomb with the critics, as Cinema Blend just posted their review (which is probably more mixed than other negative reviews)...

Green Lantern is the third comic book movie to come out in what already feels like a long summer movie season, and the third to credit no fewer than four screenwriters (X-Men: First Class actually had five). It also suffers the worst from a lot of good intentions and cross-purposes in getting yet another superhero franchise off the ground, chasing character arcs and mythology like a dog after a car, with about as much likelihood of success. With wild space alien characters and a ring that harnesses the power of will, Green Lantern demands more faith from its audience than the 60s-grooving X-Men or the comparatively straightforward Thor. Remarkably it does get you to believe in a interstellar corps of peace-keepers, but gets hopelessly tangled in something far more mundane-- that common superhero movie ambition to do too much at once.

Ryan Reynolds, gifted with the genetic superpowers of charisma and looks, carries this shaky film a lot further than it should have gone, though even he seems muted by the excess of visual effects and frantic plot threads director Martin Campbell is attempting to wrangle. At first Reynolds is a natural as the cocky, charming test pilot Hal Jordan, flirting and flying planes with the CEO's daughter Carol (Blake Lively) and suffering a routine set of daddy issues. We know thanks to a rushed, unnecessary exposition that there's something big shaking up in space, so when he's transported by glowing green ball to the dying corpse of a purple alien, we're not nearly as surprised as Hal is. He takes the ring and lantern from the dying alien Abin Sur, and after a mystical reciting of the oath and an encounter with some toughs in an alley, another cookie cutter movie superhero is born.

The parts of Green Lantern that don't feel maddeningly generic and familiar are the parts that take place in space, once Hal is summoned up to the planet Oa to meet the other Green Lanterns-- there are more than 3,000 of them, most of them depicted as a mass of silent, funky-looking aliens-- and get some combat training from fish-like Tomar Re (Geoffrey Rush, who also gets to do the opening narration for some reason), rock-like giant Kilowog (Michael Clarke Duncan), and devil-like Sinestro (Mark Strong), who despite bearing pointed eyebrows and fire-red skin is not the villain of the piece. The CGI creation of Oa is shiny and well-realized, and in a few short scenes, all of them heavy on portentous and meaningless dialogue, Strong manages to build Sinestro as the only character with any interesting motivations, trying to protect the universe while also knocking the puny yet cocky Hal down a few pegs.

Green Lantern starts finding its feet once Hal arrives in space, finally explaining its massive mythology and indulging in the special effects Warner Bros. paid dearly for. Then, inexplicably, the movie rockets back down to Earth, Hal rejecting all these cool new powers he's been given (though somehow keeping the ring), moping around with Carol and killing time while local scientist Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard) morphs into a human incarnation of the great, amorphous blob space villain Parallax. Though Sarsgaard is a campy trip as Hector, particularly once his face swells up like a bee sting gone horribly wrong, his story-- which also encompasses the paltry roles Tim Robbins and Angela Bassett play-- has almost nothing to do with the main plot. He's a more interesting villain than the galaxy-threatening blob Parallax, but unfortunately Green Lantern is more invested in the latter; a less rushed movie franchise might have let Hector develop as a villain over the course of two or three films, but much like X-Men: First Class, they seem mysteriously insistent on cramming everything into the first round. Every single character suffers as a result, but Hector and Sinestro seem to bear the worst of it.

The script perks up a little for the big third act finale, which ties nicely into earlier action scenes and actually allows Reynolds to look like he's enjoying his new Lantern powers; Campbell, for his inability to manage the massive story, does well by the action sequences throughout. But despite starring a hero whose power is literally is that of imagination, Green Lantern is unbearably rote, another slog through a superhero origin and love story and climactic battle. It's not entirely Green Lantern's fault that it's the third superhero film to hit theaters in the last two months, or the 30th or so in the last decade, but at this point in the genre the same old origin story simply isn't enough. Instead of being bold with Green Lantern's out-there source material, Campbell and company have reverted to the tiresome, too-familiar mean.

Rating: 2.5/5

I'm worried that this could be considered the most critically panned DC film since Catwoman or Superman Returns. Anyways, Green Lantern hits theaters this Friday!

wait what how is Superman Returns critically panned?

Obviously fanboys are going to accuse Cinemablend a site that doesn't like comic books movies I guess thats why they gave Thor and X-Men First Class really good reviews you know because they just don't get CBM's and they don't like them.

@Hellsing it wasn't THAT bad with the critics, but the fans hated it. Plus, it wasn't really a success at the box office.

So 15 guys at rotten tomatos have rated it, 5 are positive. IGN gave a very harsh review... All that is left to say is a quote from Ganthet:

"In fearful day, in raging night,
With strong hearts full, our souls ignite,
When all seems lost in the War of Light,
Look to the stars-- For hope burns bright!"

Go GL! All will be well!

Dang you guys have lame excuses to stay denial. "They don't like CBM's!" Waaaaa! This is not the NY Times or the New Yorker. Cinema Blend, IGN, etc are fanboy sites too.

Most critics like good movies. I'm sure they liked Spider-Man 2, The Dark Knight, X2, Iron Man, etc. I think it's obvious here.

Rotten tomatoes is going down to 20% positive on 18 reviews!

Do these critics actually know anything about the comic book mythos? Based on how they described the characters, it seems to me like it's the first time they've heard about them. I'll judge it for myself!

@primeobjective

It doesn't matter if a critic is only just being introduced to GL mythos for the first time. If it's good its good, and apparently GL is not! How do you think the general audience will react. Believe it or not CB fans are not what makes a big box office. The average viewer does, and if they cant follow along or like it then this will bomb.

You may not like Transformers 2 as a TF fan, but the general audience just likes big robot action. It sounds like Gl doesn't even deliver on the action stuff.

i lot of these negative reviews are keeping on saying one thing to me ,that people are getting tired of the origin story and that because two "ORIGIN" MOVIES HAVE already come out and it is getting predictable, thats what i feel the negative reviews are saying.
marvel72
marvel72 - 6/15/2011, 12:04 PM
you do need to tell the origin of the character, maybe you could tell the origin in the opening credits.

then you'd have two hours of the character not just half the film of how he became the character.

it does depend how you tell the origin & if its intresting enough i.e watchmen dr.manhatten origin was perfection if you ask me.

i love origin stories marvel72,because i get to know the characters became who they are if i am not familiar with them and no matter what,i will always enjoy good superhero movies and i wish they go on forever but i think they should do something a bit different, like you said do it in the opening credits because the regular audience is getting tired of the origin stories a bit especially since two origin stories came out this year

u joker lol

if Green Lantern sucks it proves to me never cast actors who played a Marvel character to play a DC character on film.

CapFan79 - 6/15/2011, 12:55 PM
EW gave it a C+.

First Class was a B+ and Thor was an A- so you cannot use the "They hate CBM's" argument.

MSN?

Word on the street about this new superhero picture, yet another comic book adaptation, has been pretty lousy. And by "the street," I mean Twitter. And by "pretty lousy," I mean people are calling it "Battlefield Earth" bad." Ouch. As it happens, "Green Lantern" is not "Battlefield Earth" bad. It simply doesn't take itself quite so seriously as to reach those lows.

The real deal Critics haven't seen it yet, like Berdeneli or Ebert or Travers. If all three like it, then we have a good movie on our hands.

And if this gets a 30% on RT from the critics and a 80% from the audience, well then that proves the critics don't know what the hell they're talking about.

It goes with every movie. It seems as if when critics bash a certain movie, they don't give a real good reason for why they hated it. Hence, Ebert with THor.
CapFan79
CapFan79 - 6/15/2011, 3:36 PM
Um, go to rotten tomatoes. The real critics HAVE seen it and are lighting it up (no pun intended).

Christy Lemire amnd Rex Reed are just as reputable as Ebert or Travers.
sonofsamadams
sonofsamadams - 6/15/2011, 3:47 PM
Uh....I have gone to Rotten Tomatoes dipshit.

Reed is the Armond White of Top Critics. he hates on everything INCLUDING SUPER 8. (Which in my opinion is the beset movie to come out this year)

Eberts old, and i expect a mixed review from him. Travers, idk. man's a puzzle. But if he gives this a B,and Berdenelli gives it a B or B-, then Lantern will be in good shape.

mrbill - 6/15/2011, 3:58 PM
Despite what alot of you are saying (the critic just doesn't like CBMs), it may just be that the movie, AS a movie, sucks! I love the character of GL, but that doesn't mean you make a move about the character, and it's automatically great; the writing may be below par, the dialogue cheesy, etc. Everyone will have to see it to know. On top of that, alot of directors and/or writers are not really fans of the superhero genre, so they do the film in a stereotypical way, thinking it will have mass appeal (even though this method never seems to work out at all)...
CapFan79
CapFan79 - 6/15/2011, 4:11 PM
@Justsomeawesomekid

No reason to call me a dipshit you douche bag! You GL fans are the biggest [frick]in bitches, I swear!

Funny how you like to pick & choose what critics are "real" critics. I'm sure Ebert and Travers will pan it too if what's been reported is accurate.

Anyway, I've been surprised to read that most of this 1 hr and 45 min film takes place on earth (to the complaints of quite a few critics) but the trailers (at least the recent ones) suggest a lot takes place in space. I think it's the opposite of Thor. The ads did not oversell the Asgard stuff but i was very surprised that half the film took place there and was EPIC.

Man this is depressing another fail for DC.

His negative view on origin stories may be a minority opinion, and I hope it is because if people are getting sick of origin stories on new characters, then people are gonna be yawning at snyders supes reboot.

I am afraid that a Superman origin story will fail if this GL origin story does.

Enough with the origins lets just watch an iconic hero everyone knows and loves actually do something with a point other than learning to temporarily save the world again. Lets see a hero's story concluded do something unique and unexpected, end it. Then in 10 or 15 years do something else with the character.

@Nephillim
No one has even seen it yet so I'm not bashing anyone's opinions on a film (how can they like it without seeing it?). If you see it and like it then cool.

I have just been saying all along it looks poor to me and I feel that I have a better pulse on the general public than a lot of CBM fans have and I'm in no way surpirsed GL will likely bomb. Funny that I'm a jerk for saying I felt it would suck. 2-3 months ago when I was saying I feared it would be bad, everyone was drooling over the convention footage and I was somehow gonna be proven wrong and eat my words & stuff.

Look, I thought First Class would suck, until I saw a trailer. Then I said it'll likely be good and it was (to me at least). These comments sections are for opinions right? I swear, if you go against the grain here you're some kind of dick. I believe I see things for what they are. So yeah, when I get trashed on for months and I'm proven right in the end I'll say it, but I've in no way attacked anyone for liking it or any other film. The only time I'll be rude is if someone is a dick first, like Justsomeawesomekid up there.
