BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Beats AVENGERS Record; THE DARK KNIGHT Next?

As it takes #1 for the fourth week, Guardians of the Galaxy has beaten one of The Avengers' records, despite grossing only half as much. Meanwhile, the James Gunn helmed Marvel Studios movie might just be about to top one of the records held by The Dark Knight too. Read on for details!

This is Guardians of the Galaxy's sixth weekend at the North American box office, and it's about to hit a milestone among all the Marvel movies. Though it hasn't had a consecutive run at the top (after being beaten by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles a week after opening), the movie has taken the #1 spot more times - four to be exact - than any other past Marvel release. That means it beats Captain America: The Winter Soldier from earlier this year, and perhaps even more shockingly, 2012's The Avengers! Both of those stayed at #1 for only three weeks each.

Guardians of the Galaxy has obviously beaten the former by becoming the highest grossing movie domestically of 2014 with a haul closing on $300 million, but how could it have more #1's than Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble when that grossed over $623 million?

Well, as Deadline explains, "Essentially, Guardians has been able to blaze a trail at the B.O. given the lack of strong franchise titles in the slumpy frame of late August and September. Not one title is eating into its grosses." As of right now, Guardians of the Galaxy is tied with The Dark Knight as that too was at #1 for four weeks. However, it's likely that the movie will top that next weekend and break yet another record as it shouldn't have too much of a problem holding off competition from Dolphin Tale 2 and No Good Deed. We'll just have to wait and see!

Wow! Good for them, but, this is totally MantiniuMan bait, @JoshWilding. He's going to nut up trying to find a way to downplay yet another MCU milestone when he sees this, you know.

I was not impressed by guardians of the galaxy. good movie but nothing special. I liked (loved actually) captain America 2 and xmen : days of future past a loy better. if I was going to my rankmy top superhero movies of this year(I didn't see turtle ninjas) I would place cap 2 first, xmen in secod, spiderman 2 in third and guardians in fourth. I know spiderman 2 storyline wasn't strong and the villains were lame but I am more familiar and also a fan of the spiderman stories than guardians. by the way guardians of the galaxy villain was pretty weak if not the weakest of all cbm this year.

So many movies release close to each other and then in August and September there's absolutely nothing smh.

Tactically this was the best time Marvel could have released Guardians. August/Sept is usually pretty bland, but this year in particular the competition's been terrible - not to mention only one decent blockbuster in July too (Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes). They really hit the jackpot

Even with the lack of competition, this is still very impressive considering its a bunch of unknowns. I've seen this 5 times, and each time it just gets more entertaining.

TMNT dethroned it opening weekend because of the fan base... Then ppl realized it was more of the same Michael Bay bullshit and nobody wanted to see it anymore.

What kind of competition will AoU have for the first 8 weeks?

The CBM calendar isn't working for me.

@kinghulk

Guardians is a really good movie that deserves success. But you can't compare 2008 or 2012 box office results with 2014 dollars. Otherwise, you have years of inflation adjustment being ignored.

- Iron Man: 2008 domestic of $318.4 MM; 2014 would be $352.4 MM.
- The Dark Knight: 2008 domestic of $534.9 MM; 2014 would be $591.9 MM.
- The Avengers: 2012 domestic of $623.4 MM; 2014 would be $646.9 MM.

That's why you have to be careful with some of these articles that are comparing these movies by USD original year results. They are ignoring significant adjustments that make a huge difference.

I would lol if GOTG beats Maze Runner.

Sadly, Dolphin Tale 2 will dominate Guardians Of The Galaxy. Expect it to stay strong at number 2. Will it go back up to number one the next weekend though? Pfft, I wish.

I can not wait to own GOTG on blu ray.

To be fair, there hasn't been that much competition, so I'd expect nothing less.

saying it beats anything is wrong. The headline for this article is inflammatory.
tonytony
tonytony - 9/7/2014, 5:23 AM
also there is practically no competition. This always seem to be the case with disney marvel movies.
kinghulk
kinghulk - 9/7/2014, 5:31 AM
there is not competition because studios usually dont release big films in august but due to TMNT and GOTG this has been the biggest august on record.

I love Guardians as much as the next guy, but box office success is measured by its profit, not by winning weekends, which means absolutely nothing.
kinghulk
kinghulk - 9/7/2014, 5:54 AM
feedonatreefrog- well guardians is doing very well in terms of profit also.
