Marvel´s Interplanetary Unusual Attacking Team has received mixed reviews from chinese critics and according to China Daily, the reason is poorly translated subtitles. The site reports that it is making difficult to understand the humor causing moviegoers and comic book fans complain as it is spoiling the fun of watching it.

A popular Weibo user, known for uploading subtitled video clips, has said he identified at least 80 translation mistakes and expresses that “Aside from a lot of mistranslations, the subtitles failed to show the original feel of the movie, such as jokes, puns and homophones. We cannot help but doubt the professionalism of the translator."

If you know chinese you can check out all these mistakes on his site, but thanks to The Mary Sue here are some of them:

  • "John Stamos" was subtitled as "Johns Tamo Si"
  • When Gamora says, "Your ship is filthy," and Star Lord responds "She has no idea," the translation came out to "Your ship stinks" and "No culture is terrible."
  • Star Lord calling Ronan "t#rd blosson" translated to "big face."
  • Gamora´s "I will not succumb to your pelvic sorcery!" became "I will not succumb to your rhetoric sorcery!"

And the worst of them all

What do you think of the Interplanetary Unusual Attacking Team subtitles? Do you think it will hurt it´s boxoffice? Share your thoughts below and thanks for reading.

Man, I thought in this day and age bad subtitles and bad dubbing where out the window. Guess not in China :P that really blows.

I never watched the German dub, so I can't actually say how much and what might've been lost there.

I have to say though that during all the screenings I attended NOBODY in the audience gave any reaction to the "John Stamos" reference. I myself had to look him up after watching the scene in the trailer, and ultimately had someone on here explain to me why he was put in with the other "outlaws".

Too funny. Some of these lines should be put in the sequel.
ManFromMars@ Is that legit? On the actual DVD? Ooh boy, there's no changing that, now.
People need to be fired, Disney. Dress someone up up as Mickey Mouse and have them go around firing people.

Why is it so difficult to translate?
The Chinese can steal technology & infringe on patents, impede the progress of human rights,etc..
..but can't figure out this movies dialogue?
Screw them.

Do they get a copy of the script to translate? That'd be the better way to go, surely.

This shouldn't be a big problem for China. Besides, I find some of these mistranslations to be a little humorous. Also, I still have faith Guardians will reach $760M worldwide and become (temporarily) the #2 movie of the year worldwide by the end of its global run. The critics may not be happy, but I'm sure non-critic moviegoers will feel a different way.

Theyre all still basically meaning the same thing. "Turd Blossom" and "Big face" are both nonsensical insults, so does it really matter?

When Gamora says, "Your ship is filthy," and Star Lord responds "She has no idea," the translation came out to "Your ship stinks" and "No culture is terrible."

Maybe peter is referring to his perverted culture?

"John Stamos" was subtitled as "Johns Tamo Si"

pkay I don't have an answer for that...

"He taught people how to twist ass"

well technically he did!

It will make around 30 more in China, 5-10 in Italy, 4 more domestically and let's say 3 more for the rest of the foreign boxoffice
That's around 45. +705

It will finish with 750+. That's enough to be the #1 CBM of the year.
