Is "Hancock 2" in the Cards?

MTV has some news on a possible sequel to the Will Smith superhero movie.

Although not based on a comic book, last year's Will Smith-starring "Hancock" experienced all the success of a pre-established superhero. The movie was a success though it only received a lukewarm reception from critics and fans.

Peter Berg, who directed the movie, spoke with Sci Fi Wire about a potential "Hancock 2"

"There might be another god out there," Berg said. "Might be another."

In "Hancock," it's revealed that Smith's titular superhero is one of two remaining immortal gods, the other being Charlize Theron's character. The two of them become vulnerable when in close proximity of each other, resulting in a tragic romance that keeps them apart for the sake of their continued survival. So a third "God" thrown into the mix will probably be the way a sequel would go.

Could be a while before we see it though because...

"They like to fast-track it, but Will's busy, I'm pretty busy," Berg said. "We're excited to do one, but we want the script to be right and the movie to be right. We don't feel a burning imperative to go right back into it."

I actually really enjoyed Hancock. At least the first half. The ending with the "mystical being" crap almost ruined it but it still gave me a giggle! I'd watch a sequel.

Yeah I agree. It was good till you got to the end. A sequel could be good.

I thought it was good. If the first movie though was because of that Superman rumor... Just make the guy Steel. They would need a great script for Hancock 2.

I was actually really disappointed with this movie - there were some good parts but it just wasnt what i was hoping for i guess (i cant remember specifically what because it was actually quite a forgettable film!) Will Smiths acting was great as usual but i cant see the point of a sequel as the whole point of the first one was the crappy hero actually becoming a real hero! a sequel would just end up as a generic action film unless they had a REALLy good team of writer behind it! Smith's great acting skills could be put to better use than this!

See, it's weird. The part about him trying to be an actual superhero is the part I didn't like. But, the part about him and Charlize being "Gods" and in love, and not being able to see each other is the part I thought was awesome. I personally, don't think their should be a second one. I think they should've both died in the first one. Kind of a Romeo and Juliette-esque feel to it. Ya know? Anyways, that's just me.

They definitely turned it into a generic action movie. But it was such a shame because while Hancock was a prick it was really good.

Maybe they can have him fall off the wagon and revert back to some of his old ways. I'd watch a sequel if it was done well.

@ josh

isn't that how most comic book movies are?? the first is the story of the hero becoming the hero?? then the sequels are action?? you can say that about just about every CBM.

The robot was just one of those street performer folks at Hollywood and Vine, CBM had a pic of a fan with the guy in the random costume. The costume was totally random(not an actual identifiable character) so allowing it in the scene where it could take attention away from what we were actually meant to be watching seemed like poor quality control on the director's part, imo.

I really like Hancock and think that it should be the beginning of a successful franchise with both prequel and sequel possibilities down the line if they stick with it.

I say it in every Hancock thread, and I'll say it again, Hancock and Unbreakable need to share the same universe, it would amplify both stories immensely.

Torque, I fully agree, if you read the book, the movie was so horrible, who would pay fer that shyte!? I left the theatre half way through. Later my wife made me watch it, but I was still pissed.

That's funny Grif, Sci Fi wire only conducted the interview the other day!

I liked I Am Legend too..except for the dodgy effects and the silly ending..and its not a patch on the book.

I was extremely dissappointed in Hancock, the trailers made it look so bad ass and it sucked for the most part. But whatever, if Charlize Theron is in it, I'll watch it

I would actually like to see a prequal before I see a sequal. I thought they rush the origin and really couldn't get into it. I would like to see the rest of the gods, and then could have him at the theaters getting cracked in the head.
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 8/18/2009, 3:40 PM
CorndogBurglar: yeah, but thw whole point of Hancock was that he was a drunken prick who everyone hated who then became a hero - the being an asshole with powers was the best part of the first film - a sequel without that would take away all originality and a sequel with it would feel too forced!
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 8/18/2009, 3:55 PM
Maybe they should make the movie a prequel that leads up to him in the FIRST movie, that'll be cool! He was a prick lol!

Cant see no point continuing it but i suppose they could, but the prequel sound better, like his whole ORIGIN from year one!

I LIKED IT, THEY SHOULD CHANGE THE COSTUME THOUGH-TOO X-MENNY. A THIRD DEMIGOD WOULD BE COOL, MAYBE ANOTHER DUDE,THAT WAY SMITH AND THE OTHER DUDE CAN DUKE IT OUT AND THE PRIZE COULD BE BEING ABLE TO STAY WITH CHARLIZE THERON WITHOUT SIDE EFFECTS. WHO WOULD YOU GUYS PICK TO BE THE 3RD?
