HELLBOY Has Finished Its Box Office Run And It Looks Like The Franchise Will Now Rest In Peace

Stranger Things star David Harbour is about to make the leap to the MCU in Black Widow but his time as part of the Hellboy franchise is clearly at an end based on these final box office figures...

When it was revealed that David Harbour had been cast as Hellboy, the response from fans was extremely positive. After all, he developed a pretty sizeable fanbase thanks to Stranger Things and the first official image of him made up as the character pointed to him doing the anti-hero justice.

Unfortunately, when the trailer leaked online, it became clear that Lionsgate was going for a Deadpool-inspired romp which focused more on goofy humour than what fans loved from the comics. Then, reports started swirling about trouble behind the scenes as director Neil Marshall clashed repeatedly with producers about a number of ridiculous sounding issues.

As a result, it probably won't surprise you to learn that after just over a month in theaters, the Hellboy reboot has ended its theatrical run in North America with a dismal $21.9 million.

Overseas, the movie has made only $18 million which means it's earned a total of just $40 million. Considering the fact it had a budget of $50 million, Lionsgate has taken a pretty significant loss and it's hard to imagine the franchise living on after this disappointing result.

Guillermo del Toro spent years attempting to get a third Hellboy movie off the ground and that never happened so it's difficult to believe that anyone will want to touch the Dark Horse Comics property again unless it's in the form of a TV show or something totally different to this movie.

Get Guillermo to finish his trilogy and pretend this one never happened.
Then people will go see it.

@BritishMonkey - After Halloween and Terminator, this is slowly becoming a trend in Hollywood so it wouldn't surprise me if they actually tried doing that.

Never saw the sense in rebooting Hellboy.....it was completely unnecessary. Should have just given Del Toro his wish and let him make the dam 3rd movie.

I don't think the movie is great by any means, but I liked it though.

Hellboy was probably the most comic accurate movie made thus far.

In that most claim to know the character, yet no one actually reads/watches it.

I think that statement that it was more of a Deadpool clone than being like Hellboy from the comics is false. It was more like the comic in tone to me than the previous movies. I enjoyed it for what it was.

Who's bright idea was it to have this film release a WEEK before Endgame!?!? That was just dumb.

The damage that a bad film can cause to intellectual properties can be brutal. If you don't have a firm grasp of the concept, just leave the character alone. They should have learned something with films like Green Lantern and Batman v Superman.

@johnnymarr - Green Lantern could've been great. The cast was fine but everything was just......ugh.

@DeadWade213 - Awful screenwriting mistakes aside, I think Reynolds was the wrong pick to play GL. They injected too much frivolity and silliness into the character. A more serious and "tough as nails" Hal Jordan is the right way to go.

But Mark Strong was a great Sinestro.

A superhero movie released on week after another superhero movie and two weeks before the biggest superhero movie of all time, a movie barely advertised, ended up bombing? I’m shocked. I have no idea why Lionsgate wanted to bury this movie but they got their wish.

@TheUnworthyThor - Because it’s Lionsgate, and outside of Hunger Games and John Wick, they generally suck at marketing their movies.

Why didn't they just do a final sequel with Ron Perlman?
