Some very exciting news for horror fans this evening, as Mike Flanagan (Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House) is re-teaming with Stephen King for a new small-screen adaptation of the legendary's author's first novel, Carrie.

Deadline reports that the pair - who recently collaborated on the upcoming The Life of Chuck - are developing the supernatural coming-of-rage tale as an eight-episode series for Amazon, with Flanagan on board as showrunner and exec producer.

Brian De Palma's 1976 take on the book is widely viewed as one of the better King adaptations, with Sissy Spacek delivering a terrifying and tragic turn as the title character, who begins to manifest  destructive telekinetic abilities after being relentlessly bullied by her classmates and tormented by her domineering religious fanatic mother. John Travolta, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, Betty Buckley and William Katt also starred.

The movie's climactic bloodbath is often hailed as one of the most iconic scenes in cinema history.

2002 sequel, The Rage: Carrie 2, was not well-received, and the less said about the 2013 remake starring Chloë Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore the better.

King has several other feature adaptation of his work on the horizon, including The Long Walk, which the horror maestro wrote at age 19 under the pseudonym Richard Bachman; Jack Bender's The Institute, and Edgar Wright's new take on The Running Man with Glen Powell in the lead role. Josh Brolin, Lee Pace, Katy O’Brian, Karl Glusman and Daniel Ezra are also on board.

In addition, Paul Greegrass and JH Wyman are adapting King’s recent bestseller, Fairy Tale, into a series. The project was initially being developed as a feature at Universal.

Flanagan previously helmed King's The Shining sequel, Doctor Sleep, and Gerald’s Game. There are rumors that they are also discussing a new version of The Dark Tower.

What do you make of this news? Any interest in yet another adaptation of Carrie... even with Flanagan involved? Be sure to let us know in the comments section down below. You can also check out the trailer and synopsis for De Palma's movie.

"In this chilling adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel, withdrawn and sensitive teen Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) faces taunting from classmates at school and abuse from her fanatically pious mother (Piper Laurie) at home. When strange occurrences start happening around Carrie, she begins to suspect that she has supernatural powers. Invited to the prom by the empathetic Tommy Ross (William Katt), Carrie tries to let her guard down, but things eventually take a dark and violent turn."

Love Stephen King. Some great adaptation have been made - It, the Shining, Shawshank, Misery... and Carrie. I mean, give it a shot. Certainly, Mike Flanagan is a fan and proven himself but I'd rather he stayed focused on The Dark Tower.

Goddamnit, Flanagan, get Dark Tower started, first!

That said, I wouldn’t be terribly interested in this if he wasn’t involved, but the man has proven he can handle King.

Are 3 adaptations not enough? I love Mike but the same story yet again for 8 hours can’t wait for the pointless filler, should have made the Tommyknockers instead

I was ready to shit on this as another pointless remake, but then I read Mike Flanagan. I can't wait. This will be great, and I would like to know if they'll stick closer to the book.

Nell Tiger Free for Carrie. She was great in The First Omen.

@NinnesMBC - You think she can pass for 16 years old??

@Lisa89 - Some can do, as surprising as it is. The main female lead of the Terrifier films is in her late 20s yet she portrays a 16 year old in the last 2 movies. So it's possible.

@NinnesMBC - ‘Terrifier 3’ takes place 5 years after ‘Terrifier 2’.

@Lisa89 - So the new film had a time jump, so what? Doesn't contradict my point that Lauren LaVera was in her mids 20s back then and played a 16-year-old character that was that film's lead. Nell Tiger Free is just 25, she can still theoretically pass as a teen, the rest lies on the hands of the make-up department. And her acting chops also back up my case.

Mike Flanagan is up there with Taylor Sheridan as one of the best writers/creator in the business. He deserves your attention. All of Mikes stuff has been so godd.

I remember reading a while back that Flanagan considered The Dark Tower to be his dream project. Maybe with him doing Carrie it’s his way of dipping his toes into the King-verse. Amazon certainly has enough cash, and is obviously willing to spend it, to back a big budget Dark Tower series. If there’s anyone I’d trust with a full series it would be Mike Flanagan. Even his worst stuff on Netflix was fairly good.

@vegetaray - Totally forgot he did Doctor Sleep 🤦‍♂️. Yeah he can take care of any King project that’s thrown his way. I have full faith in this…

I've missed his annual Halloween mini-series this year. Can't wait. I will make it a point to get myself an Amazon subscription next year. No way I'm missing this, Carrie was one of my favorite books as a child.

I've never read the book only watched the 1976 movie, which is a classic. Is there enough in the book to fill 8 episodes?
