Yesterday, Clive Barker ("Lord of Illusions"), surprised horror fans by announcing on his official Facebook page that he will be writing the screenplay for a new Hellraiser film. It revealed that it will be a remake of the original 1987 film, which is based on novella The Hellbound Heart. I'm assuming The Weinstein Company (producers) are hoping for the same type of success that the Evil Dead franchise experienced will rub off on Hellraiser. A franchise that has been in decline for many, many years. The last five Hellraiser films have straight-to-DVD.

As for Barker, he hasn't written a screenplay since 2008's Book of Blood, and before that it was 1995's Lord of Illusions. He also hasn't involved with Hellraiser since 1996's Hellraiser IV: Bloodline. Which was the fourth film in the franchise, and sadly the last of the nine films in the series to be released in theaters.

HOT FROM HELL! My friends,I have some news which may be of interest to you. A few weeks ago I had a very productive meeting with Bob Weinstein of Dimension Pictures,in the course of which I pitched a remake of the first HELLRAISER film. The idea of my coming back to the original film and telling the story with a fresh intensity-honoring the structure and the designs from the first incarnation but hopefully creating an even darker and richer film-was attractive to Dimension. Today I have officially been invited to write the script based upon that pitch. What can I tell you about it?Well, it will not be a film awash with CGI. I remain as passionate about the power of practical make-up effects as I was when I wrote and directed the first HELLRAISER. Of course the best make-up in the world loses force if not inhabited by a first-rate actor. I told the Dimension team that in my opinion there could never be a Pinhead without Doug Bradley, and much to my delight Bob Weinstein agreed. So once the papers are signed , I will open a Lemarchand Configuration, dip my quill in its contents and start writing . I promise that there will be nowhere on the Internet where the news of my progress will be more reliable than here, because the only author of these reports will be Your Infernal Corespondent, me.

As questions are asked I'll do my best to answer them, though as you all know making movies is a volatile art,and things seldom remain fixed. One question regarding the rating has been asked. I asked it too,and Dimension confirmed that they are purely interested in an R rated picture.Somebody else asked why I'm not writing something original. The answer is that I am.After HELLRAISER I intend to write and direct a completely new horror movie, which will mingle graphic horror and erotic content,to create an unrated film which will push the envelope of extreme content further than ever...

Stephen King once said "I have seen the future of Horror and it is Clive Barker." We must not be in the future yet.

Hopefully Pinhead won't be the focus of the movie like in the original. He's a much better character when he's in the shadows.

This is so weird I think a week ago I was saying we needed a remake of Hellraiser. Someone is listening.

I've always enjoyed the Cenobites, but I wish they would do more than just stand there and look cool.

In this day in age I highly doubt Clive Barker can make a truely good remake of Hellraiser. The original film is so creepy, gorey and insidious. The special effects in this movie were so good considering their was no CGI. Practical effects always look better than computer animation espicially in horror films. Why is he making a remake? Some movies should be left alone and Hellraiser is difinitely one of them.

I really don't understand why Clive Barker is so celebrated. I watched the first two Hellraisers, and they just didn't do it for me. I watched Lord of Illusions... and that was just awful.

It's his ideas over his execution of the material. The first Hellraiser movie was his directorial debut, and the first two were very low budget. The fact that those visuals stick with you is a testament to his and his crew's abilities. He is a very original artist.

Even with Bradley and Barker on board, I think a remake is pointless, they should just do a partial reboot that picks up after the (then-present day) events in the 4th film and ignore the later films. The 1st film is one of my all-time favorite horror movies, I even liked numbers 2, 3, & 4, but I hated 5 & 6 (didn't see the rest, but I'm not missing much).

@Boogie138
So he's a writer whose ideas don't translate well on screen?

I'm optimistic if it's more practical effects and it does start a new line of films. If it's anything like the 3rd Hellraiser onwards, then we're in trouble.

I've always liked Nightbreed and Candyman more than Hellraiser but the first one is pretty cool. I'm just interested to see if Clive Barker is any good any more.

Holy Shiznit Clive Barker is a genius when he writes, and directs. If this is true we'll definitely get another classic like the Original hellraiser.

@Archangel-"the special effects were so good"? Ok, for their time, they WERE pretty good, for the most part. Bob Keene did an excellent job with the Frank resurrection as well as the make-ups for the Cenobites. BUT...remember "The Engineer"? The final Cenobite at the end? Not only was it not faithful to the original description from the novella, it strongly resembled the final demon from Evil Dead 2 and, as it was "moving" you could see the cart and wheels underneath it used to create the illusion that it was in motion. HORRIBLE effect and completely took me out of the movie. The effects, other than that, were good for it's time, but seriously outdated. Practical effects today can be done much better and CGI used to hide "wheels/carts/wires/ect". When CGI is used to ENHANCE practical effects, I'm all for it. Not when the CGI is the effect itself.

Now, with all of that being said, I feel that with today's technology and practical effects having improved ten-fold since then (KNB? I'm looking at you!Your effects for Maniac were top-notch and perfect for Hellraiser!), Clive's heavy involvement, maybe some better actors (I'm sorry, but Ashley Laurence, while beautiful to look at, seriously got on my nerves) make it an R-rated/un-rated DVD release...it can be a damn good horror movie!!

Along with this news, Clive Barker's FB page also announced that he's finally finished with The Scarlett Gospel, the LONGGGG awaited novel featuring Harry D'Amour crossing paths with Pinhead!!!! Supposed to be the destruction of the Cenobites, from what I've read a few years ago!!! I'm actually more excited about the novel!!

As far as Clive doing more films, I'd love to see "Thief of Always", "In the Hills, the Cities", a BETTER version of "Rawhead Rex" (the one we have is horrible. Red, animatronic eyes?! Mouth barely moves?!) and the one about the people stranded on the island with the corpses coming alive (can't remember the title)

The original Hellraiser was a classic and great. They should have stopped. I didn't realize there were 9 films total.

I think a reboot of the original will be good especially with todays special effects, you can really create the torment.

The original is amazing, the 2nd one was pretty good, and the 5th one (Inferno) is also amazing.
